My Dad taught me kerosene for aluminum. Don't tape the paper down instead put kerosene under the paper on the glass/marbel. The paper will suck right to the glass. If you tape it the paper can't flatten out when you get close to edge. That's why the edges appeared sanded first. This is great I just got my first 782. The journey begins. Thank you Sir

Thanks for the video, I had a blown head gasket on my polaris 700, sure enough the head was warped, so I took two 8 1/2 by 11 sheets taped together on a piece of glass and followed your lead, started with 150, then 220 then 320 and 1/2 hour later it was done.

Good vid. I use a little dishwashing soap in the water and a bucket nearby to dip the head in to rinse, can also rinse paper. Can use a magic marker to color the sanding surface if you don't have paint or machinist dye. I like 100 then use 220 to finish. Paying a little more for better paper helps. I sheet of cheap paper for one head.

Always try to apply even pressure while sanding a flat surface. I never heard of figure eight. I was always told to go back in forth one way. I did a few old school small block Chevy heads and they worked really well. Modern auto castings are a lot more precise, you shouldn't ever need to unless your milling heads down for compression. I'm rebuilding a couple of Magnum 18s right now. I'm going to sand them a bit. Magic marker tells the story better and doesn't clog the paper, it's much thinner than paint. These Magnums don't run much compression and have a monster thick head gasket. I suppose it's because they are air cooled and are always going to flex a bit when they run hot.

Thanks. I think I'd start out with a more coarse grit paper and work up to the finer grit, (maybe 3-stages total).

Do you have to do the engine side too
@xOLDS45512x
@xOLDS45512x 6 месяцев назад
Generally not. If the engine side is warped you'd need to disassemble the engine and have the block decked at a machine shop.

What’s the maximum amount that you can sand? I’m sanding too my Tecumseh and I’m off by .008” on one edge only.

I only deal with Kohler's and i'm not familiar with Tecumseh but if it's a flat head you can go as far as you want as long as the valve don't hit the head when they open.

My 216 john deere kohler k341 hasn't been running and sitting outside for about 10 years. This process will probably need to be done as well as new points condenser plugs oil change fresh gas

If I use anything finer than 220, it doesnt work for me. I use 220 or 180.

Hey olds, i have a kohler magnum 20. Would blown headgaskets cause foamy oil to come out of my breather tube?
@xOLDS45512x
@xOLDS45512x 6 лет назад
Justin Pancurak Not sure about that. Oil doesn't generally foam and I've never ran into that issue myself. I don't think blown head gaskets would have much effect on the oil in the crankcase. If your gaskets are leaking you should be able to see some evidence of it around the heads, odds are they are likely blown but I can't guarantee it's what causing your breather issue.

Good stuff, I'm planning on attempting a valve job on my k532. Head bolts, reusable or buy new bolts? Thanks.
