I got 800 something out of mine before anything went wrong. It needed a valve adjustment. They were so loose that one rocker arm was not on its valve any more. Sometimes that can cause it to be hard to start. There are videos that show you how to adjust the valves and it is recommended to do that once every blue moon. I guess I should have had my valves adjusted sooner. I did that myself, it is not hard once you have seen a video on how to do it. Taryl on the Taryl fixes all channel is quite informative and a lot of times humorous. He seems to really know all there is to know about small engine repair. I don't know if synthetic oil is what made my engine last as long as it did. Even after I did the valve adjustment it ran fine and so I am not sure that too much if any damage is done in it. When it comes to oil it is all really a matter of preference, some people don't believe in synthetic oil and some only use synthetic. Sometimes it is not required but highly recommended.

I had a Cub Cadet with a Kohler engine. They are junk. A lot of people don't like MTD or Kohler and you have an awful combination with a Cub Cadet. Mine is not one of the older ones that were better.

365hrs here 🤷 got it for little to nothing due to it wouldn't start. New flywheel key, improved ground and valve adjustment and still going good years later.. That being said, I can't say I'm a huge fan of it either lol. Just saying it's still kicking.

Good video. Some days my engine would run, the next day it was dead. I checked the spark on a tester and it was fine. I measured the 10k resistance of the coil and it was fine. But i was still not convinced. While i held the test leads of the meter on the HT lead, to measure the resistance, as i moved the HT lead around, (to the spark plug), in some positions it would go open-circuit (i.e. no reading or infinity or over-range). I just ordered a new coil. Hopefully that will fix it.

The ignition coil appears to be mounted upside down. The parts diagram shows it with the ground wire on the bottom side

I think it didn't work the other way around because the ignition wire was hitting something. Usually i install parts like this the same way they were installed before. And of course i can't remember what happened in this case, because it was many years ago. Btw, this coil still works!

I think the electrical seat contact is the cause for the coil to not last very long, if you have an uneven lawn, and the tractor is bumping around, the rider maybe not heavy enough, and the seat contact opens and closes a few times, while the engine is running. At that point the safety mechanism is force grounding the ignition coil to avoid ignition in case of emergency. I imagine the coil doesn't like that very much, and eventually burns out. On the other hand without the ground wire on the coil, you would not be able to turn off the engine.

Not in this case. When in doubt, just install it the same way you found the old one. Take a picture before you take stuff apart, and then compare your work when you are done. I posted this video 7 years ago, and it still works!

Probably would’ve helped if you cleaned off the contacts on the fly wheel add takes up some clearance in itself

The old coil lasted only 118 hours on this Kohler Courage SV600 engine. I replaced part number 20 584 03-S. From one ignition to another it just didn't start anymore. The mower is only a few years old. Very disappointing, it failed to fulfill my hopes, that this mower could last forever.

The answer is simpler than most think. In 2007, Kohler created a joint venture in China called Kohler-YinXiang Ltd., based in Chongqing, China. That is where all these engines come from China and the quality is Chinese. Briggs and Kawasaki is the solution. Husqvarna no longer installs these Chinese engines.

Maybe the,butterfly, has come a loose in the carb . it will only run wide open in that condition

+Damell Parker If there is no or very little spark, then either the gap between coil and magnet is too large, or the coil is bad, or the safety switch is grounding the coil. If you unplug the safety switch, the motor may start, but then you would be unable to turn it off without shortening the contact. Do you understand how that safety switch works?

kohler bucket engine! they always leak oil from the valve cover, it happens so often, we include it in the annual service

I'm starting to not like Kohler engines anymore because they're not keeping up on making the parts my older Kohler engines needs i know alot of other people must have older Kohlers like i do and need the new parts like me but it says no longer available each website i look at the Kohler replacement parts not available i need a new spark advance module for my Kohler pro cv16s engine I can run the engine without it but I'd like to try an keep original the most i can Can't though because Kohler doesn't want to keep making these computer parts

@@michaelking3327 then in that case I'm gonna make it run like a command model instead of the pro model I might just re wire the whole thing to more of how the 2004 craftsman's are wired up it'll be taking away 4 or 5 relay boxes and that's a big upgrade and no safety buttons That's gotta be why they don't hardly have nothing on the Kohler pro model mowers like even just a replacement manual book can't find that and no replacement ohv cover gaskets for either model of Kohler cv491s and cv16s I like how the newer 2004 craftsmen is wired up they done good knocking off all the relays and the spark advance module but on the 04 model has a Briggs and stratton 18hp engine its newer and the replacement parts for it are available if i ever need to get any But me and other people with a bunch of Kohler engines are pretty much screwed and the pro model an command models parts you can't swap from one engine to the other on those 2 even if they look the same a little on the outside they're not the same on the inside there's 2 differences on the inside of the cv16s and the cv491s engines

Is that a kohler 700 series pro ? Are the spark plug boots replaceable on those or do I need a whole new coil because the boot is torn ?

Yes, the plug and coil is one piece. This is the SV470-SV620 engine series. They call it Kohler Courage

Part number for that coil? My useless local dealer sold me 2 lead (said to use the smaller tab of the two) coils and the originals are single pole. Seeing I’m getting no spark it looks like I have the wrong ones and the part stamp is long gone on the originals.

It depends on the engine, I have a Kohler 19hp and the magneto gap is between 0.006" and 0.010" at the magnets.

What’s the purpose of the primary wire I see coming off it’s white.

That's the OFF button, because this would run forever, but if the white wire is grounded (off switch) then it kills the spark, and the engine stops. If you unplug that wire, you wouldn't be able to stop the engine. You would cut off fuel, but it will still take a moment to stop running. On a mower you want an immediate stop. Like jumping off the seat will ground that wire (safety switch).

mygiguser I understand how the coils operate both primary and secondary but for the life of me I don’t understand how grounding the primary (white wire) would stop the spark since the primary and secondary coils are separated. I can’t seem to understand where the short is.

You are the only one who commented on this adjustment that mentions sanding the rust off the mag! Good mechanical skills my friend 🙂I have seen it more than not also have oil down in the threads that you cannot see until the coil is removed and a no start due to bad ground.

And with the ground still plugged into the magneto I know how he did so his ignition solenoid must be bad if it is hes using a battery charger on the nut on the starter to start it up

Thanks for the video. I'll try adjusting the gap, as my engine won't start (AGAIN), but I think the coil is bad. It was VERY rusty to boot. I tried to clean it, put it back, but still, no spark from the spark plug, and I was grounding it. Do they just go bad over time? Also, there's one wire that goes to it, white above. I hooked up a meter to this wire and it actually grounds out (when I check continuity). Is that supposed to be grounded? I wouldn't think so. I tested for voltage when the starter was on, and it barely got 1 volt. I would have assumed it would be getting a full 12 volts, unless my assumption is wrong.

Yes they go bad over time. The coil does not need 12V, the coil is generating the power for the spark on its own. The white wire on ground shorts the coil out to stop the motor. If the white wire is disconnected, and the engine is running, it will only stop if there is no more gas, or if the white wire is grounded. The gap has to be as small as possible, but if it is too small, the magnet on the flywheel will have physical contact with the coil and damage it. With that said, if you disconnected the white wire and you still have no spark, then your coil is bad.

u can test a coil by pulling one side off at a time correct

What do you mean by pulling one side off? The installation needs to be as shown, and if you have no ignition afterwards, then the coil is bad. To test the coil you need to measure the resistance of the coil with an Ohm Meter. If it is too high, or if it is shorted out, then it is broken for sure.

Crank up mower and had it running.. Take a pair of grips and pull obe side off motor should die down because its running off one cylinder... I have a vtwin 19hp Kawasaki on my zero tyrn and this happens to me on a job last year.. Didnt have time to take to shop so my mower doc told me too do this and it work..

If the side u pull off goes not die down then that ign coil is bad.. I even had one that kept going in and out on volt reader but this will work i promise

So what does it mean if it bogs down easily? Starts like a champ, but bogs down when mowing? New plugs installed, new filter, regular oil changes.......

broderp not enough air, or not enough gas. Meaning cleaning carburetor may help, adjusting valves, or exhaust could be clogged...

If like my command, Had same issue if twin cylinder one coils crap out in heavy conditions. I tried all the NORMAL Recommended Things. Acted as if choke was on…… Put clear spark detectors on each plug so when acted up I turned around and saw weak or partial spark. My mower shop lead me down fuel ⛽ bla bla route Save headache and buying extra parts and try. Sure u got going by now. Wouldn't hurt have spark testers on hand ✋ anyway. Helped me several other repairs. Check ✔ out GRASS RATS GARAGE. GOOD EDUCATIIN SNALL ENGINE RELATED. STAY SAFE. GOOD LUCK

broderp ,,,,,,,, easy fix. Mine did the same thing usually when the fuel level is low. It would choke down and die. Set for a minute, start it again and run great. Gas cap not venting. Loosen gas cap, problem solved

How about a hard starting Courage 20HP engine??? My engine has 360+ hours on it, Mower is from 2008. Think it needs a new Ignition coil or carburetor ?

Have problems just changing the plug, so it goes all the way in and straight....very poorly designed engine ...got 330 hours on it so far..

Dan Knowlton you can take the hood off easily, and then accessing the spark plug shouldn’t be a big deal.

Last season I bought a “good deal “.. it’s a husky 26/54 with 101 hrs, I used it for about 30 minutes and it died, I turn the key and nothing.. any idea?
