It's not even just black UK actors. A lot of white actors nowadays are from the UK as well. A lot of models are also from African and European countries. It's no secret this country prioritizes foreigners over Americans because you can get the same amount of work or more for less. When Samuel Jackson pointed this out a few years ago people called him divisive but it's the truth. Foreign privilege does exist.

When are you African Americans going to admit you guys are not as good. Just compare Idris Elba’s performance as Mandela with Will Smith in Concussion and those two performances show you why British Black actors get parts over African Americans. Idris not only did perfect South African accent, he sounded Identical to Mandela. Will Smith’s African accent was awful, it neither sounded Nigerian nor African and he is meant to be one of the best black American actors. African Americans actors are paying the price for being American, because American culture is so insular, it has made Black Americans the least worldly and cultured black people in the world so it is harder for American actors to play non-Americans. Now African Americans have lost their Hollywood protection when Hollywood thought only Black Americans could sell movies and you Denzil Washington and Forrest Whittaker in British movies playing black British people but couldn’t even do the accents. British actors have always been better than American actors of every colour. But there is a bigger gap in quality between Black British and Black Americans because you are comparing actors who have trained for years and done movies, theatre and TV with people where models, rappers, stand up comedians and wrestlers doing it for the money and fame.

A Nigerian American and a Black Britain discussing Fundamental Black Americans is disingenuous… neither truly knows our issues and they can’t have logical dialogue about them… just stop… other Blacks benefit from the work and sacrifices FBA have made… maybe they should just say thank you… and maybe they should do a little study on capitalism and that will tell them why the powers that be would rather have a Black immigrant over a FBA… immigrants will do anything to be successful and are easily controlled

I'm Black British so I can relate to much of what he said, however I disagree with some of the points he made and perspectives he spoke from. I think he was wrong to speak of Black Americans as having an "entitlement" to play their people. Ironically, if he studied himself, he would be aware of the discussions many Black Americans have about ownership, representation, the control of, the appropriation of, and the many other issues regarding their opportunities and portrayal in the media, with them owning and controlling their narrative being one of to solutions they propose. This isn't just a 'job' to many of Black Americans, but rather part of the long struggle for equality. So maybe he could have tried to empathised with them more rather than speaking from some sort of paternalistic manner where he thought he could tell them how they should think. One thing I do agree with him in though, is the fact that it is often Black American directors that cast Black Britain in American character's roles. I thing thhe question should be given to Black American directors for the true conversation regarding this.
@ray1411
@ray1411 Год назад
Those black American directors are usually products of black America's affinity for Pan-Africanism. Because, for the most part, most black Americans simply want to live in harmony with our brothers and sisters abroad. And that desire is even more intense the higher up the social ladder a black American climbs, to positions like Hollywood movie directors, producers, and casting directors.

Lately, I have noticed that many have become quite disrespectful toward Black Americans (non-immigrants). Keep in mind, if anybody who "werks hard" it is the Black Americans (non-immigrants) who fought against white supremacy, advocated for many of you to come over here, and opportunities for growth in America. Did you guys do that in your home countries for us? Just asking for a friend. By the way, when Cynthia Erivo played Harriet Tubman...that wasn't it.

We knew what was going on outside of America. I realized, at this moment, a lot of these black Brits are essentially too young to recognize the flaws in their reasoning. He is probably in his early to mid-30s. He is technically a kid to me. I'm not much older than him but old enough to realize the disconnect can be attributed to his age. He was too young to know what we knew a long time ago. We watched Desmond's. We loved Soul II Soul. We knew about anything good outside of America. We simply didn't want to mimic these people. No, we wanted to see them flourish and share their experience and culture. So, guess what? Don't fault us for your inability to remain consistent? We saw how the UK press demonized Mark Morrison. Why didn't we see or hear an outcry from black Brits? That would've signaled to us to become more vocal in defense of Mark Morrison. And, yes, for movie roles on our icons, you should try to know everything about the icon. What the hell is wrong with these kids? You can't embody a character without some connection to the actual person. That's why, even though we haven't seen Chaz Shepherd in umpteen years, he was able to still pull off embodying Marvin Sapp. He grew up in the church and probably knew of Marvin Sapp for years. You need that connection. That lack of a connection is probably Whitney's latest biopic tanked at the box office. And without this connection, we end up suffering through Cynthia Erivo's horrible depiction of Harriet Tubman, a movie some of our elders have probably waited a lifetime to see. Do you know how troublesome that is to people? It's akin to Star Wars fanatics suffering through Disney's Star Wars movies. It's almost heartbreaking. I can understand some people can't relate to this feeling. It is only entertainment, right? But, guess what? Entertainment is a very powerful tool. That's why they burned books a long time ago. That was and still is a form of entertainment. So, whenever they burned a book they stole a person's opportunity to enjoy entertainment and possibly feel inspired. That's what these UK actors do whenever they do a hacky job. They have stolen an opportunity to feel inspired through entertainment.

The point is to diversify your skill set. An actors job is to fit a role and the more roles you can fit the more jobs you can book. Black Americans, especially the men, tend to limit their creativity and range in order to maintain a hood fan base but this mentality is counterproductive. If all you can play is specific roles because you but yourself in a box you’ll only get those types of roles. You need to broaden your world view to be good actor and black Americans are notoriously closed minded.

That’s just not the reality. There are countless stories where the most talented actor didn't land the part-it was the one who checked the right boxes for what the casting team was looking for. Then he doubled down, saying something along the lines of, "the person who works hardest gets the job." That statement felt like a subtle jab, implying that Black American actors don't put in the same work, even though he didn't say it outright. Maybe I’m reading into it, but that’s the message I took away. He made some strong points earlier in the conversation, but that last part? Wrong. UK actors in the US are paid the SAME. Everyone has to be a member of the union SAG, so they’ll get paid the same as any other actor in the US - at the entry level. Of course, higher up, there is room for negotiations. UK rates are different - sometimes lower, sometimes actually higher. If the project is being made in the UK/Europe and actors are being employed locally then sure, sometimes, the cost of talent could end up being cheaper, but remember that the majority of the budget of ANY project goes towards the equipment, the locations, post-production and publicity. Most people outside the business don’t realise that actor fees are nothing in comparison to other costs. And technically, most US Tv shows and movies are shot in the US. Yes, US actors should NEVER be discouraged. The fact is, getting quality work in Hollywood is dang HARD. The majority of actors take years and sometimes HUNDREDS (yes!!) of auditions, before they book anything worthwhile or that can create any real momentum, but often those who do not work in the industry don’t factor this in. Being British or American is not enough to book any project. The actor has to DELIVER. And unfortunately, many actors who try out for these roles are either not ready, or not right for what producers are looking for. If you were given $70 - $100 million to make a project, I promise any sane person will look for the BIGGEST or most accomplished talent for their projects, unless someone unknown walks in and blows all the competition out of the water, or they’ve decided the project needs to have an unknown lead it. This conversation about UK vs US Black actors is so general and often not backed up with facts. If you count role for role, there are infinitely more black (and white) US actors working in US projects, than British or non-American actors; but it is so easy to make it about the most successful or most visible ones; and the fact is, black US actors are killing the game. By the time UK actors come to work in the US, they come off the back of big projects, or huge success in the UK. So they are either already stars, or they’re on their way. Otherwise, they have to do the time, just like Idris Elba did and any other person will have to do. He was in the US for YEARS before he got The Wire. I think the title of the video was deliberately provocative and designed to be click bait. Any other part of Kojo’s nuanced answer could have been used in the title but they knew this will get clicks and provoke debate.

This is the best explanation for British actors getting parts over African American actors. British black people have been global for 40 years, work harder and have more training. 👏🏿 👏🏿 💯 100 Speak it Kojo. Exactly that. American history was so easily access back in the day than ANYTHING from the UK, and why? Because the ones in power didn’t want us learning our REAL history as so it would turn it around like quick sharp. Also Kojo is spot on with Americans only looking in their glove and NOT wanting to look at the reverse to try and mimic the English way, cause they wouldn’t want to, end of. When was the last time as he said an American actor wanted to take on the role of a black British historian? Never! So let’s speak on our chest with the ‘truth’ here. That being said we need to galvanise TOGETHER here as these division only further separate us.

black british actors are great ! With few exceptions ( denzel , freeman, mackie, esposito from america) all my favorite black actors come from the UK. I feel they can play anything very well while most black actors nowadays can't make me believe they are the characters they play unless that character is like them . Even someone like Will Smith couldn't play a bad guy convincingly but any black british actor can play a villain ( example: David Oyelowo in "rise of the planet of the apes" was a very convincing villain

Ninjas need to tell the truth... outside of acting, a majority of us aren't studying as hard as we should. Bc if this were true, we would be so far along as a culture. This is why we miss out on opportunities. Lack of preparation. I see nothing wrong with what he said. We will never move forward unless we confront the issue and figure out how we can improve in this area.
