Here is a video of a custom trailer I built to haul my Kolb Firestar from my house to the flying field that is about 10 miles away. The trailer turned out good and works well.
Sorry about the video. This is only the 2nd video I have made and I still am trying to learn how to do them.

why the complicated jacking system ? Wouldnt longer ramps have worked just as well (assuming loading angle was the issue.

Is there plans out there to be had?

That's a clever idea with the cordless hammer drill to drive a jack. I've used them like that to start go cart engines. I'd want an enclosed trailer though for permanent storage in it.

Very nice. I've a MkII , and a boat trailer. I'm going to convert the trailer similar to what you've built. Thanks

I'd put softer springs on the trailer axle.

Hi Helyguy02 Nicely done! I was wondering if you made any modifications to your trailer? I really like the engineering you did. Any plans/dimensions or did you build 'on the go'?
@heliguy02

The trailer was just built on the go. It was a perfect custom fit to the Kolb. It worked perfect for my needs. I do not have any plans and I have now sold the plane and trailer, so unfortunately I won't be able to remember any dimensions. Thanks.

what axle width did you use?

I can't remember. I have sold the trailer now so I can't measure it.

@@heliguy02 it looks like 72" maybe, I'm trying to build something like this now for my firestar

the video would have been far better, except for that continuous noise, but I like your trailer

Great job. You thought of everything. It looks very secure. The guy I bought my Firestar from recommended that I take the wings off when trailering rather than trust the little tube by the tail that supports the folded wing. Apparently yours is trustworthy. What is the max speed you drive when trailering?
@heliguy02
@heliguy02 5 лет назад
Thanks. I never had any problem trailering with the wings on, but i didn't travel very far from my house to where I'd fly. I could travel about 55 to 60 mph. Once I got a little faster the trailer would start to sway just a little. Maybe due to the large surface area of the wings. Thanks again.

It’s not that you need to take the wings off, but you need to support the weight of the wings on something besides the pin in the fuselage. Tony was just lucky he didn’t tear up his boom. I had my kolb transport inside a truck and the bouncing on that pin tore 2” hole on each side. Had to replace the boom.

@@scottluther6699 kolb says you're supposed to make at least some kind of a fairing to keep the wind from hitting the tail and folded wing head on too. I've got an old foam mattress I was thinking of cutting up to support the bottom of the wings in the trailer somehow, I think if that hole gets enlarged it'll slap around in there and ruin it in no time going down the highway, I bet just wrapping a bungee around the tube and then over the top of the fuse will dissipate the downward force on the hole enough tho. this trailer design is great but I'm worried about the narrow axle width, a wind gust could just blow the trailer over on the highway.

Is that just a modified boat trailer?
@heliguy02
@heliguy02 9 лет назад
Hello, No, the trailer is not a modified boat trailer. It is completely scratch built and custom fit just for my Kolb. Although I have seen many nicely modified boat trailers used for planes.
