Kolkata got the first metro service in India now there is a news update that Kolkata's newly started metro route East West Metro route from Howrah Maidan to Salt Lake Sector 5 might be privatised according to a leading news portal.
As of now workers associated with this metro in Kolkata are not very happy and moving towards protesting against the policy.
On the other hand Kolkata metro is in talking terms to Delhi Metro so that they can make Kolkata a self sufficient corporation.

Mass transport education and health should never be privatized rather it should be subsidized. This is the core of a countrys development if people are left out of it then inequality will increase.

If you privatize the Kolkata East West Line 2 Metro, the fares will be immediately increased as well as new funds will be sanctioned for it's extension from Salt Lake Sector V to Haldiram or Airport via Kestopur or Baguiati and another extension from Howrah Maidan to Dhulagarh or Santragachi.

Developing infrastructure using tax payer money and making it private so that private companies can take the profit is the worst model. Either make a lines fully private from the start like Reliance in Bombay who paid for the construction, or go for PPP model so a Private company share the cost and risk. As far as giving Kolkata Metro operation to DMRC, it cannot be considered as privatisation, as DMRC is an autonomous public sector company.

It was completely government funded project . Goverment is unable to fund more from its side , so to get more money for the newer projects , Monetisation through "Privatisation of Operation" ( not the property) is being done . Most countries involve private players in Infrastructure projects as they are a costly affair . It's true that anything working in WB has to be controlled by others else it would be deteriorated to stagnancy . People in Bengal don't work in Bengal but work somewhat better outside the state .

@priyanshumishra5778 Privatisation of operation of an infrastructure built totally on public money is nothing but a giveaway and corruption. It means the private company needs not spend capital and take risks on the development of the infrastructure but enjoy the profit from the operation. It means the project does not earn money for the government when it is operationalised and does not recover part of the initial investment from tax money. Private operation makes sense when the private company contributes wholly or at least half (as in the PPP model), so they should have the rights on profit to recover their investment. By the way, I live and work in Bengal. I worked outside Bengal for some time but returned when my company established base in Bengal. Where do you live and work?

​​@@sanjay59741 Private Companies bear the operational cost , give profits share to the government so that the government can develop more infrastructure (here metro) with that money . The management is being privatised for more efficiency , less corruption , quality maintenance & profit seeking Which helps the Government to Finance other crucial projects . It's bitter process but the only way to Fund other projects is through Private Management of Services . You are left with 2 options 1.Either live with stagnancy by paying less 2.Or Pay more to get more . Kolkata is dead City ~ Rajiv Gandhi Point 1 was prevelant and is prevelant even today is its biggest hurdle in Infrastructure Growth /Income Growth / Investment Growth in WB . It's a hard pill 💊 State Finances are not strong enough since the inception of KMRC 1984 , The state never proposed for acquisition of stakes in the metro . Neither Financed any other metro route (Like JV between Delhi & Central Government in DMRC) . Whereas there are 20 Operational metros in India 2 Under Construction Except Delhi Metro with 50% GoI share . All other Metros are developed with PPP models . The Problem with KMRC is that no State / Private players are willing to invest in new projects , due to poor track record of land acquisition, clearance issues , risk perception on gains , etc . I don't know what will happen to 40 year old metro system of India . This is speculative news aired by some people in KMRC seeing the lacking political interest of the Centre in the state after 2024 results . A Mega Protest 🪧 will be staged and all such news will become history . Don't worry there is a very thin chance of any significant progress in KMRC for some more years . A government employee can never be terminated for his failure in SOPs or Decision this provides immunity to more accountability thus, over a long term a business by government fails and ends with Sale outs or Bankrupty . The government should start critical projects on their own and shift its management to private players later . Both will be benefited And Economy will be saved too

You don't pay a single penny after ITR The indirect tax you pay is invested upon Government employee salaries /PF /Facilities /DA /Bonus/Allowances/ Pensions etc Some goes to subsidies on Electricity & Water Irrigation to Rural areas . Some goes to Education & Healthcare Others go to Interest payments for Capital Expenditure Loans on New Roads ,Bridges , Budget deficits & PWDs . All these are responsiblities of State Concurrent lists Now you know how much you pay and how much you get

Wait a minute 😂 KMRC was always under Delhi aka GoI . What's the problem now Because the Real GSDP of Delhi alone is 76%+ of WB State . Because DMRC is God for KMRC in terms of operational route length DMRC - 351.28Km KMRC - 58.68 Km Jokes Apart 😂, Because DMRC is JV public sector of GoI & Delhi Govt. KMRC is public sector of GoI DMRC has the best metro management , experience of vast routes , high riderships & Quality of Service in India . KMRC is not a state government entitity Since 1984 not even 1% stake has been acquired by WB government over "evergreen" financial constraints of the state . Never proposed for any PPP route till date . It would be 1000 times better to give it to DMRC rather than a private company .

Those complaining of ticket price hike, it will always be under a margine where a common should able to buy tickets. Think once if people don't buy tickets how will they generate money. Except, reliance metro on mumbai, no other metro is pvt in India. They're corporatised under state central govt ownership, which gives the service like pvt. Wb govt refused to to do this for Kolkata metro. Kolkata metro has shortage of employees, it must be corporatised rather than being part of Indian railways who don't have expertise in metro services. Lastly if u want good services u must also pay for that. u guys want capitalist services with communist prices, hypocrites of highest grade!!

When you have limited resources , You should never over subsidise fares in Big cities . Use that money in backward regions of the state or for Capex growth .

Non Hindi states tax like bengal, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Maharashtra like states to subsidisedes the bimaru gutkhakhor belt state already. Like up , Bihar, jharkhand, chattisgarh, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh etc .😅😊

" Devolution of Central Taxes to States " A territory being a part of the Country needs to share the taxes to the country with whom it earns money 💰 The profits earned does not solely belong to the territory that has the headquarter of the company (Corporate Taxes) . As it is earning from consumers beyond its location of establishment . The Economic Disparity needs to be addressed by taxing the rich (Living in Cities/Capital/Industrial townships/Official address/workplace ) through income tax and giving it to poor (living in poor region/states/districts/villages) . As Far as WB is concerned. FYI - The Tax Liability is upon Business/Corporate class & Merchant/Traders who are not all but mostly migrants /outsiders working in Kolkata/WB (Except a few Celebrities) that accounts for 1.4% (12-13 lakh) of the total population .
