I was in Kolkata for the first time as an adult last month. That Newmarket area (and north Kolkata in general) is one of the craziest places I've ever been. So chaotic, so draining, but so full of life. As a Canadian quite disconnected from my Bengali heritage, it made me hungry to learn more & also amazed that half my family comes from such a different place than I do. And hungry for more Kolkata food of course. What a fascinating place! Cheers Gabriel.
@seemaprasad6677
@seemaprasad6677 Год назад
The Newmarket area used to be upscale and so much fun. Not the cheap packed area it is now, horrible. The fire, most think arson, destroyed it, the economy of Bengal was so bad the rich Marwaris, Parsees, etc left. The upscale (non-bengali, they are the ones with real money, bengalis spend it on food) need was not there. Now there is an upscale mall, but mostly foreign designers/merchandise. Not the posh atmosphere that Newmarket had.

These hand pulled 'rickshaws' only run ( in a limited radius) in Kolkata in India. However, u get these pre WWI transport in global cities like Tokyo, Hong Kong and maybe sm other Far Eastern cities as tourist transport and are expensive.. The origin of 'rickshaw' is Japanese [Rickshaw originates from the Japanese word jinrikisha (人力車, 人 jin = human, 力 riki = power or force, 車 sha = vehicle), which literally means "human-powered vehicle".]

They have a couple of steel plants in Durgapur and Asansol which used to be permanently on strike and unproductive, both public sector companies under SAIL and they recently ( as innlast decade) renovated the one in Asansol but they both were pretty old and antiquated and most importantly unproductive due to perennial strikes and poor working ethics of the employees. They also had CLW in Asansol that is a large locomotive factory that builds electric railway locomotives. But that is also a public company. What you showed is parts to near to Howrah. It seems that you got to the Howrah railway station, crossed the Howrah bridge into Kolkata and started exploring from there and then stopped the video and called it Kolkata giving it a wrong impression. It's like me getting to Frankfurt central station and showing parts around it which are the worst parts and call it exploring Frankfurt, Germany. These parts are the dirtiest and most chaotic parts of the entire city and it is populated by mostly lower socio economic migrants from neighbouring states like Bihar, Jharkhand, UP, etc.(the higher socio economic migrants stay in other parts generally but sometimes culturally they make things dirtier than their counterparts like pan and ghutka spitting and all).

Hi Gabriel, it's no wonder why India is a commercial attraction for businesses a large city that has everything to offer no wonder many travelers voyaged out for spices in abundance. Spices like Turmeric, Cumin, Coriander, Cilantro, Cinnamon, Fennel, Nutmeg, and Cloves to name a few and that doesn't include medical plants like Ashwagandha, Neem, Lemongrass, Mint, and Curry leaves. India is undoubtedly one of the most fascinating places in the world.

Indian cities are like elephant, you cannot do justice if you visit only one old touristy corner of any city where everyone takes photos past 50 years. I would advise before you visit a city in India, please announce on your page and get feedbacks from the locals where to visit. In Kolkata your visit from New Market to North Calcutta wholesale Bazars are disappointing for the Calcuttans who lives in Central, South, East or West Calcutta. When Indians visit US we hardly take photos of the slums, homeless, drug addicts, or dirty streets of LA, SF or New York to post on social media.

Interesting to see Kolkata through the eyes of a foreigner. I would highly appreciate the tourist for pointing at the (decaying) graffiti and artwork. I have walked down Lindsay street so many times but I never noticed them, because all I worry about while walking here is to avoid collision with passersby. The sight of hand pulled rickshaws is saddening. They don't compare with fashionable horse carriages seen in some parts of the world. I have never taken a ride in these rickshaws. The rickshaw pullers live in abject poverty. They are not locals - they come from remote villages in Bihar where they often face caste oppression and exploitation. In fact most of the people seen in this clip are migrants. They do odd jobs and have a hand to mouth existence. They are not covered by any insurance or social security. So, it would be too far fetched to expect any sense of cleanliness or orderliness from them. The yellow taxi in which he took a ride is also disappearing fast. This is the old Ambassador car which is no longer in production. Some of them (in ramshackle condition) are still plying though. People nowadays are switching over to app based cabs. Hats off to the tourist for taking a walk in the vicinity of Howrah bridge. Despite being a local myself I have never done it or would dare to do it..... what has been shown here is one side of the cityscape. To get a glimpse of the more refined side of Calcutta kindly visit Rabindrasadan, Nandan or academy of fine arts.

First time and god was that full on Varanasi from nepali border by local bus 30 rupees i think for 13 hrs, Gaya ( oh my lord ) , Bodhgaya for xmas day, 2 day train to Hardiwar then Rishikesh( so love this place used it as a chill out between missions), Rajasthan, Amritsar, Rishikesh, McCleod Ganj then Delhi to my mates wedding in Nagasaki. Never travelled further than Europe. before 39 years. best experience ever and before india, 3 months in Nepal trekked to ABC did a month long tefal course and two weeks in Tibet to Mount Kailash, go to Kailash dude , Im going back as i only got into the valley a cock up with the guide and rest days did me in sadly but so incredible. That was 2010 , then 2015back to Nepal EBC three weeks did the extra week walking to Lukla, then went across east nepal border into darjeeling, into Sikkim wonderful but had a close call with a guy showing me around some, gang attacked him, Sikkim otherwise was wonderful don't pick up random locals for guides lesson learnt, but everything is an experience, felt protected anyway, i was ok but full on, then Delhi and a wondrous time in Leh , Ladak Kalachakra in 2014. Went to Srinigar saw supposed tomb of Jesus and had a crazy messed up houseboat experience then more lovely Leh time, bus down to Manali , back to Dharamsala then home . Can't wait to return so much i want to see, I almost went to Kolkata but avoided it as i thought it was too full on, it looks full on but friendly thank you for the experience now Bless you man :) Namaste X
