This video will demonstrate from start to finish how to draw a basket weave and how to kolrose the design onto a wooden spoon. The process is displayed as simple as possible to show you how easy it can be to get started. A basket weave is a perfect design to learn if you are looking to get into kolrosing, it is a simple design that you can do many things with. Kolrosing is a wood decoration technique which is simple to do. You will use a knife tip to draw a design onto a wooden surface, and rub oil and a pigment into the design to make it show up more.
Equipment needed for this project:
- Mechanical pencil (make sure it has a good eraser)
- Bendable ruler (In the video I use a business card and also free-hand the pattern afterwards)
- Wooden spoon (I am using a maple wood spoon that I carved and pre burnished)
- Burnishing device (I use a decorative garden stone)
- Finishing oil (I use a food safe tung oil)
- Pigment (I use finely ground coffee)
- Paper (to practice the design)
- Kolrosing knife (I am using my knife made by Del Stubbs of Pinewood Forge)
- Hand towel (To balance the spoon on while kolrosing)
- Paper towel (To clean up the oil and coffee)
Intro/outro music by Danheim, the song is called Lifa & Dauðr from the album Hringrás: danheim.bandcamp.com/album/hr....

Hello, thank you so much for this very informative and inspiring video!! I can't wait to make some more spoons so I can try it out. I've already drawn a few different patterns on paper and am excited to try it out on wood! I also appreciate your spoons...really nice. Just a bit of feedback: the focus issue (as you know), that was a drag; for a good chunk of time there was a glare on the handle so even if it was focused, we couldn't really see it very well; and lastly I would suggest that when you hold the spoon up to the camera for a closer look, you hold it still rather than moving it back and forth. I hope you hear all this feedback as really just me saying, "I really enjoy looking at your work!!" Thanks again!

I loved watching this! Shame about the focus sometimes but it’s all good, I really enjoy the relaxed style ‘ops I dropped my spoon’ 😅 Now I need to buy a kolrosing-knife and come up with a makers mark 🧐🧐🧐 Big thanks for the inspiration and tutorial

Watched your tutorial and you really explained the process of Kolrosing in easy to understand detail. Purchased the tool fron Valley Forge designed by Dell Stubes and going to try some designs on Opinel #8 pocket knives. Starting simple at first and hopefully progress. Thanks for a great tutorial video.
