Kona Electric Pre-Conditioning. Defrosting in the winter on a timer

How to set the timer to precondition your car for when you depart.
Set the temperature, set the day/time you want to depart and leave the car plugged into your charger and you're all set.
Lots of testing has shown the Pre-Conditioning switches on 30 minutes before the departure time.
From my charger I can see it initially draws a full charge for a few seconds then reduces the power being drawn to just what it needs. For heating I saw around 1kw engine used, for A/C cooling it was as high as 1.7kw being used!
Anyway, no more scraping the car in the morning!

Dear Friend, Thanks for nice review. Can you explain, how is AC cooling performance in 45 degree (Heat) temperature of Hyundai Kona Electric car ? And how many kilometers it will run on full AC within one recharge ?

Thanks Nigel,all interesting snippets of info for potential owners {not me unfortunately} Am surprised no app for pre conditioning,I really would have thought Hyundai would have included this feature,it seems most other EV's have it,and very useful for those frosty morning starts,perhaps it could be included in a future update if poss.Also ,it would be good to have the choice whether to pre-condition to a lesser extent direct from battery power,requiring no plugin

Yep it seems by design too so not an oversight just not possible with current design. They've missed a trick for sure. At least my charger will have app support soon

There is an app called Autolink. It works in Korea and is available for Kona (ice versions) in NZ but the EV variant is "pending"

I'm very interested in buying a Kona or Niro. But this puts me off a bit. I have an i3 and it's so useful to precondition the car on the fly. As it stands I won't be able to precondition the Kona before my commute home from work. Hopefully this is fixed next year when my car is due to go back.

First slight bummer I have become aware of. App control for preheat /conditioning of battery is very close to an absolute must have. As an absolute minimum have an app that hook up over Bluetooth that allow one to press a "precondition button" within 30 minutes before departure on a 10-15 meter distance for all the minus 20 degree days in Norway. Happy owner, happy guest being driven home, happy battery, happy car. Because we really do not want to pre-schedule departure of friends visiting.

Agreed with your frustration, but let's be honest: if you go to work every day at xx:xx, it's nice that you can set it at that time. Maybe you have 2 days that you don't, either remove them or edit them the day before. If you forget it: who cares, it preheats/cools and nothing is lost (well, some energy). An app would be great, but not sure if it's coming... I manage just fine without, but the app would be great!

Great videos Nigel! Just a question, why would you set the charge limit to 50%? Why not say 90 or even 100%?
@EVPuzzle
@EVPuzzle 5 лет назад
Just to stop it charging and mess up my test. I wanted to focus on just the climate control turning on. Strangely I have found times already I don't want to charge as I know I'm charging for free later when out. It's nice not being under pressure to charge to high levels all the time.

When using the precondition on the app, does the car need to be plugged in? I live in Las Vegas, and its hot. If i go to the shops, i like to be able to cool the car when im about to return.

Hi Nigel, slightly off topic. Each day I get in mine and turn it on, it says that the Aux Battery Saver+ has been active whilst it was parked. Are you seeing this. I am currently only charging it on weekends, so it doesn’t get plugged in during the week.

And strange, since it´s the same hardware as in the Korean model. I own a Niro, and the reason that don´t have app support is a difference in hardware. So this is really strange and sad :(

In Korea they have app for Kia and Hyundai, but not in Europe.. Living with the Leaf for 3 years, the app is a great feature, but for sure no dealbreaker. It was (one of) the reasons why I chose Leaf over Soul that time, but realy I don't use the app that often.. Even in -15C, the car heats up so quickly you kind of don't need it anyway.

@therandomtester9561

The car HAS to be plugged in, right? Do you know why? Leaf does not have to be plugged in, Tesla and VW the same. Not sure about the other cars though. It's not like you run out of battery on a short preheating, 10-15 min on the old 24kWh Leaf takes max 10% in really cold weather. And by that time it's pretty toasty even in -10/-15C.. Also, does it run the heatpump while heating? Strangely enough, on the old Leaf it only uses the PTC-element while on preheating. When the heatpump (or AC) starts up, you can hear a whine under the bonnet, but you'll never hear that while on preheating the old Leaf.. On the old Leaf, if not plugged in it will preheat for 15min I believe it was. When plugged I think it was something stupid long like 2 hours or something..
@EVPuzzle
@EVPuzzle 5 лет назад
Sorry Im not sure about heat pump. I guess whatever is most efficient as that seems to be Hyundai's theme. Yes MUST be plugged in Why is the big question. I suspect it's the same reason we can't see or set the EV settings/ data without the car being turned on.
@therandomtester9561
@therandomtester9561 5 лет назад
I didn't know about the heatpump not being used on the Leaf until I "incidentally" read it myself about a year ago (not in the manual of course..), so I don't blame you for not knowing ;) Just for a future test of yours. I too thought it would use the most efficient as it does when driving. It can run heatpump while standing still and turned on, so why shouldn't it while preheating? But that's how it is on the old Leaf.. I don't see that the car must be turned on to set timer to be any reason for the need of power to preheat. That's only the matter of starting up the correct screen so you can change the settings. I've never set a timer on my Leaf, but I believe you have to "start the car" there as well, if not using app of course. Plugged in or not, the heater should, and could draw the energy from the battery either plugged in or not.. If it couldn't, it wouldn't be able to heat while driving either. And when Nissan and VW makes it possible, so should Kia/Hyundai. But then again, Nissan says it's not possible to make steeringwheel adjustable lenghtways in the Leaf because of something, while "all other" EV's can.
@abandonedtube
@abandonedtube 5 лет назад
I3 doesn't have to be plug in, even has a precondition button on the keyfob, so don't even have to open the car or use the app.
@therandomtester9561
@therandomtester9561 5 лет назад
@@abandonedtube that's the best way. I think the E-NV200 has a button on the keyfob as well, but the Leaf funnily does not, even though they have the same fob..

Disappointed to see that the preconditioning can not be set remotely from your smart phone. Also not sure if you mentioned that preconditioning is beneficial to warm a cold battery which will reduce consumption when the trip starts.
