Here's another installment in my belay device review series, I got a really good chance to use this one over a few days while climbing some long routes in Red Rocks with a group of three.

You mention that the Gigi is good for rappelling, how do you like to set it up? Do you add multiple carabiners when rappelling on skinny ropes? I have the gigi, but haven’t rappelled with it. When multi pitching (not guiding) do you generally carry one gigi and your partner carries the belay plate and then swap at changeovers? Love all the content you put out. Thanks.

Ya, I don’t really rappel with the Gigi also, but if I did then I would use two lockers to add some friction with the wider holes on the device. Whenever I have the Gigi I carry another device with me usually an ATC, so I pretty much always have two belay devices with me.

@@ryantilley9063 can you show a rap setup in a future video?

Ya certainly, I'll add that to my list!

Hey Ryan, what's the one single best all-around belay device for 50/50 trad/sport as a lead climber with a new-ish partner following? ATC Guide, or the Gigi? I'm currently using the Mammut Crag Light on 9.8 (lead) and 10.2 (TR) mm ropes and like it so far, but have to stay focused on it while bringing my second up to me. She doesn't fall much, but we're gonna start pushing harder soon. Thanks for the awesome content!

Hey man, each device would be perfect for what you want to do with it, since your ropes are larger in diameter then the Gigi would probably be the better way to go. I personally like to have both with me so I could use the ATC for rappelling but if you double up your carabiners and play around with it a little you can find a good system for rappelling with the Gigi on your ropes.

Thank you for great videos! Any hints on how to lower someone from above with Gigi?

Ya, I actually have a video where I talk about lowering from above, everything in it apples to the Gigi also: m.ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-zx8JP4TRJlM.html

very good, but could you pls explair the plate using in multipitch, when the follower climer 1) first is in top rope and then 2) pass you , and is in lead climing position over you ? thanks . so I mean the change from belay the second climer as a follower , pass you und becomes to the frist leading claimer , how to handle easy with out putting off the rope
@canaDavid1
@canaDavid1 3 месяца назад
The best way to do this is to take your lead belay device (get it from the follower maybe), mount it on the brake strand, and only then remove the carabiner block in the Gigi

Why does this device have symmetrical holes one on each side where you can clip for guide mode? An ATC guide has just one for example.
@iacamigevaerd376
@iacamigevaerd376 Год назад
IDK but since it does not have a wire it's important to have two places to clip in. It's useful in different scenarios: lowering from above, some rescue situations, you can clip say a backpack to the lower hole whole belaying your second.. there are many possibilities

Are there any advantages compares to a reverso regarding performance?
@ryantilley9063
@ryantilley9063 3 года назад
There is way less friction pulling the rope through the Gigi than the reverso in guide mode, so over the course of a lot of belaying from the top this device will really save your elbows

@@ryantilley9063 thank you very much for that info. Apart from that case what Rose would be an advantage?
