Konstantin Samoilov - Documenting Russia’s descent into Authoritarianism from the Inside and Outside

Russia seems condemned to repeat the mistakes of history, rather than learning from them, as shown by Putin’s mass mobilisation of Russian males into the armed forces, and the shock and panic it prompted earlier this year in Russia. Konstantin Samoilov is a well-known RU-vidr whose channel ‘Inside Russia’ comments insightfully on Russia’s descent into authoritarianism over the last few years. But now, like many others, he’s outside Russia, with no idea of when he can return there.

But everything he says has not been true when compared to many others who are still in Russia, especially friends I have.. you also have to consider that he has to stick to this western side of the conflict to continue to survive with his income and followers. had he been on the Russian side in his updates, his followers would have turned against him. right now he lives on donations from his followers. I liked him at first until I realized he lived on donations after he moved out of the country and he always talks in favor of the west. I think you always have to think realistically when money is involved.

Konstantin is more business savvy than Vlad perhaps , he is good on Russian economics , and of course as a Russian he also like Vlad has an insight into the Russian mindset , having been subject to Russian Propaganda. Vlad can add an academic angle on that mindset . If you watch , Vlad , Konstantine , 1420, Anna , Denys Davidov , Jake Broe and others , you will get a fairly rounded insight into what it’s like to be Ukrainian, living within, or outwith Ukraine, or a pro Ukrainian Russian living out-with Russia .

i see a lot of positive commentaries about K and his "conversion". I have my own opinion, as I too was watching his videos but watchink also a lot o other videos and educating myself. Like those of Vlad Vexler, The russian dude, Anna from Ukraine etc etc. I realise that maybe without knowing but I suspect intentionaly, he manipulated his audience. I have longtime hesitated to express my opinion but no more. As others stated, the conversion was forced , only when it began impacted him. Even then, and even when was no longer in danger no word on supporting the plight of Ukrainian people no express condemnation, obviously no protest. Videos about how good is the food in Uzbekistan, nature...Looking back , the return to russia was accompanied by a hike in pay, the expats in russia are paid a lot of money, then again the fact that he was filming without really being bothered by secret police it was a little bizarre. He left his family in Usa to go back. Just think a little. Maybe he was an "American" as russians have planted a lot all over the world...Maybe not But he is no fan of Ukraine or of the free world. He was obsessionnaly insisted about "making money" . Sometime it is not patriotism but "russian supremacy" and an inflated opinion of his own worth. I see now how my opinion about hime changed over time..He is no friend of Ukraine , he is just another diserter or weak willed russian that made putin who he is, "his president " as the named the genocidal fascist dictator. Dislike and do not recommend, see the channels 1420, vlad vexler, the russian dude, true patriots not oportunists like Konstantin,

@@Grundewalt Ι also have my own opinion about mr K. I dont agree on much with you, but Im glad that you are thinking for yourself, instead of following the flock. Imo Konstantin is an extremely selfish person and I can sense alot of greed. I dont know if this is the result of his childhood experiences or a natural aspect of his character. Konstantin is a CEO in a big construction company. He probably makes 5X the salary of his average viewer, yet he never stopped e-begging. I believe that he curates his opinions carefully in order to appeal to a target group he knows well from his years in US. Upper middle class conservative Americans, who need affirmation by an ''ex defeated opponent'' for their way of life and political views, and they are willing to tip hard once they get it. Thats the way why he overplays the ''freedom'' of the 90's when in reality it was chaos and traumatized any ex-soviet citizen who lived through that hell. The only people who managed to get out of that warp of decadence were just lucky or thieves to one extend or the other. I remember sitting in the living room of my Ukrainian girlfriend in the early 00's. Somebody stole our telephone line to sell it for scrap and we were without telephone for days, and I needed to call my parents in Greece so they wont think that I was killed by mafia lol. At a point I started laughing and my girl said in a sad tone that stayed in my mind ''How did we came to this. Before (USSR) we didnt have much but we had our dignity and security. We had our lives''. I wasnt laughing anymore. Konstantin keeps crying, keeps posing as if someone is out to get him, when other people were by far more vocal and nothing happened to them. 1420 is 100x more anti-establishment than Mr Couch Potato. While crying about censorship he shadow bans people who make comments that call him out, even if they are formed in the most polite manner, and many times deleted videos that backfired on him. Because he is afraid that this will scare the big fishes and they wont super chat him anymore. My problem is not that Konstantin is not a firm believer in the Cult of Ukraine. Im not either, maybe because I have been there and Ukraine is not some ''fairy tale media land'' but a real place with real people and real problems. My problem with Konstantin is that he is a hypocrite and he doesnt have the balls to say his opinions despite the monetary impact those would have on his fan base. Btw Vlad Vexler has CIA/MI6/NGO plant written all over him. He clearly is a man on a mission. He is playing the game way better than most ''pro-Ukrainian'' propagandists, and I put it in quotes because many of them dont really have Ukraine's best interests in their mind. The most funny thing is watching his obviously uneducated groupies trying to form elaborate eloquent sentences because they believe that they are in ''the presence'' of a ''philosopher'' lol.

Sorry, but I will have an unpopular opinion of Mr. Kontantin compared to the others commentors. I lived in Kyiv from October 2013 until February 27, 2022. I was in three cities (Kyiv, Rivne and Lviv) that were being bombed before I walked across the border into Poland. I can tell you, my Ukrainian friends have no sympathy for Mr. Kontantin, who fled Russia for two reasons: to not be held responsible for being complicit all these years with the Putin regime, and to avoid the sanctions. Remember, Mr. Konstantin and the cowardly Russian men who fled their country and left the women behind, don't care about Ukraine - if they did, where are the protests? Why aren't these Russians now abroad filling the streets in support of Ukraine? Mr. Kontantin and Russians like him allowed this monster in Putin to take complete control over 20+ years with barely an objection and now Russian culture is destroying Ukraine. Mr. Kontantin is NOT the victim here, the Ukrainian people are.

I have personal difficulty with the spot that Konstantin finds himself in. While he finds that what happened on Feb 24, 2022 was a horrendous and tragic crime, it fails to address his observations, feelings about 2014 invasions in Crimea and Donbas. Like a great many Russians, this didn't really matter at all, until Putin came for him. Is that a fair statement or not?
@MrBendylaw
@MrBendylaw Год назад

@rob6052
@rob6052 Год назад
@@MrBendylawTrue, the propaganda is strong. Media control by the state, virtually absolute. For an average person, perhaps the rest of the world is viewed solely through the fascist lens as fashioned by RT, etc... If on the other hand, you're a worldly person who's lived and worked abroad extensively? Not trying to zero sum this, but it gets more difficult to see these horrors unfold in Ukraine when they so obviously truly kicked off in 2014, with threats from 2013 and history. The "average" Russian did not actually benefit from this, but probably supported it. The worldly, well educated Russians did. Not all, but it is fair to attempt to reconcile someone's relationship with their nations subjugation of the people and property of a neighbouring nation.

Right. The guy makes a fortune for himself under the Putin regime for nearly twenty-three years, both at home and abroad, and somehow as if by magic manages to leave Russia overnight with both his assets and his family intact, after months of openly violating anti-foreign propaganda laws while receiving income from gullible RU-vid fans in violation of still more new laws, and still you buy into his laughably transparent schtick. According to him in a comment addressed directly to me, Russian intelligence doesn't have time for him because his nakedly anti-regime propaganda is done in English (!!) If you buy all of that, it's doubtful anyone can help you with your emotive credulity problem. What he says is what you already want to hear, which the whole of Russian intelligence around the world has devoted itself for decades to knowing about you better than you know yourself, but for your purposes he's just some nice (rich) guy who is oh-so traumatized by a war which has never been any threat to him in the least, and which has been quite profitable for him in the bargain.

@@roncollins1046 This reads like an attempt at character assasination. At best this rant indicates a severe disruption of the executive functions of your cognitive systems. That would be indicated by the internal contradictions among the your varied complaints alone. Or perhaps there is more method to the apparent anger expressed by your disconnected complaints. If one reads carefully, you have not expressed a single word of disagreement with a word that Konstantine has uttered. How much money he has, how much he earns from RU-vid, even to what he owes his survival in a “demanding” political environment is absolutely irrelevant; what is important is what he says, the rhetorical effectiveness of his communications, and the quality and rationality of his thought. To some extent, One can judge the truth and quality of his analyses through the quality of their expression. Your statements, Mr Collins, constitute a scattershot of innuendo and questions, that serve, and I believe are intended to serve, as a means of sowing confusion and side tracking the conversation into twisting paths that may attach some sense of suspicion and disrepute to Konstantine’s name and reputation without really saying anything. I don’t know your motives, what has set you off, but you obviously know a lot of surface details about his life that irritate you greatly. Perhaps you are obsessive compulsive? Perhaps you are extremely jealous of the attention and good will offered Mr. Samoilov? Or perhaps you are driven by other, un-guessed-at motives, Mr. Collins. At the start of the war, I started watching Konstantin and a bunch of other russian youtubers, to get an idea of what was going on inside russia. Many of them, I was like, "this person is obviously a kremlin parrot". This was especially true of some that tried to put happy faces on essentially what were amounted to war crimes and genocide. The young youtubers, people that only know russia with Putin, seem to have the hardest time distinguishing reality and history from kremlin propaganda. Konstantin, I had some frustrating moments of "this guy is one too", where I unsubscribed more than once from his channel over something he said. However, I kept going back to check on him. Over time, I realized this is just a guy under a lot of pressure, and was being careful, while still trying to speak the truth. I also seen an evolution in his thinking, as everyone learned more about the war, where I could see he was honestly restling with his own conscious and his beliefs from multiple directions. It was obvious he knew right from wrong, he was just trying to figure out how to do the right thing in a very grey situation. It kept me around and watching his channel. Now he outside russia, I am a regular viewer, as he digs in to real society of russia and its workings. Well done Konstantin.

I have followed this Russian vlogger , Konstantin , ( Inside Russia ) from before Russia's invasion of Ukraine and in general I support his views on hating what his country ( Putin ) has done and the general support that Putin has received from a brainwashed populace , particularly in the small towns and lesser known cities of Russia , where the general opinion is that 'They will ( unquestioningly ) fight for the 'Motherland' . But, he spent about 10 years living in the USA ( Maine and California ), and as a businessman was 'decidedly' conservative , loved guns , spoke about the Jan 6th invasion of the US Capital in ways I quite disagreed with , so my question would always be , did he support Trump ? As I've said , I have mixed feelings about Konstantin , many of his USA supporters are far right wing Republicans, but not all, of course. I do admire his courage to take a stand against his country. And his world was turned upside down as a successful businessman, He also feels things very intently and is able to convey those feelings . He is also very well organized and will always land on his feet .

Hello dear Konstantin. I have a little soft spot for you because you are the first Russian vlogger I watched, way back in early March. I've (not always) quietly watched the depth of your understanding grow over the course of this tragedy, as you call it. And unlike some other people, I understand your caution and love for your family, so I will never fault you for not using all the words and terms that are in your heart and on the tip of your tongue. Idk if you will read this or not, but I will drop it in here, anyway. Regarding the difficulty that Russian people have about accepting the fact that their country has done and is still doing some very bad, completely unacceptable and morally wrong things, I just want to let you know that we feel it too. It really hurts the heart when we have to swallow these things. Opening our heart to let those things come in feels heavy when it settles into us. It feels like grief, like responsibility, like acutely painful anger and sorrow. It hurts. I get it. I get it because my country, Canada, just accepted the understanding that we have inherited our own history of cultural genocide. For a very long time, but especially during the 60s, my government abducted indigenous children from all over the country and sent them to live in abuse and extraordinary mistreatment, even sexual violence, while their language was shamed into the abyss of non-remembrance and everything that made them distinctly who they are was violated and punished into silence. We found hundreds of unmarked graves of disappeared and unaccounted for children around these schools. The last of these schools was closed in 1996. After George Floyd was slowly murdered on international television we had another such long and painful moment where we collectively came to remember that no, we were not really the good guys for being at the end of the underground railroad, the first to outlaw slavery in the commonwealth. We inherit a history of slavery that lasts for 250 years, prior to that. My generation and previous ones collectively forgot it, and here the French word "oubliette" comes to my mind because, in truth, we threw this knowledge into a prison of non-remembrance. We come into remembrance, and it hurts. It does make us better, though. I believe that's true. So I am sharing this to let you know that you are not alone with this, and neither will Russia be, when it one day opens up to understanding. It's ok though, because there is something on the other side of this tunnel. We don't disappear after we go through it, but it changes us for the better.

@@melodieshimon Thank you for saying so. I sometimes wonder what would have happened with the First Nations if the Huron, the Cree, the Iroquois, the Salish had not been so generous and helpful and rather saw the Europeans as the threat they were when the Miq maq met the vikings on our east coast some 1000 years ago. The Canadian first peoples that I know about were more egalitarian and more democratically sophisticated than Canada is today. I wonder how this country would be if Canada had not tried to remake you into something else. We owe a debt, not just for our prosperty, but even for our survival. It has not been repaid with kindness, and I am sorry. I wish that things had happened much differently, and everything that Canada did, instead, makes me very sad. Residential schools are almost the least of it, but I know that they left a terrible generational wound. There is nothing in the world that can make up for that cultural loss and that loss of personal esteem, but I want to let you know that I will always support your land rights, your right to compensation and to self determination. I think it would be decent of our government to fund a language preservation/restoration program for every First Nation, and if there are any traditional practices, such as the potlatch, that are still outlawed, these should be legalized and restored for generations to come. I'm glad that Trudeau is doing something to meet our commitments for restoration, and I am also sure that it's not enough. I am not sure what could be enough.

There are many exiled groups now that are forming that will become vital to the necessary changes in Moscow. An interesting point I can’t ignore: 2 months ago our military (in Australia) declared that in January 2023 they were sending several thousand soldiers to Eastern Europe. It would be naive to think that some of our Special Forces are not already there as well. If Russia goes ahead and declares Martial Law early next year, it could mean NATO forces do get involved couldn’t it? I hope that doesn’t happen for the sake of 100s of thousands of innocent Russians but Kremlin has shown it hasn’t changed its war doctrine since WW2😢.

Again an incorrect comment about the situation in Ni and it history the british DID NOT recruit criminals for the irish independence war i quote The vast majority of Black and Tans were unemployed First World War veterans in their twenties, most of whom joined for economic reasons.[24] The RIC offered men good wages, a chance for promotion, and the prospect of a pension.[25] According to historian David Leeson, "The typical Black and Tan was in his early twenties and relatively short in stature. He was an unmarried Protestant from London or the Home Counties who had fought in the British Army [...] He was a working-class man with few skills".[26] The popular Irish claim made at the time that most Black and Tans had criminal records and had been recruited straight from British prisons is incorrect, as a criminal record would disqualify one from working as a policeman.[24] The auxiliaries were ex officers and definitely no criminals please get your facts straight before coming out with this rubbish on such a popular youtube channel
