Thank you! I always thought it was a shame how little recognition these more traditional K-Beauty brands get outside of Asia. I think part of the reason is that it's quite hard to communicate the philosophy behind these formulations/ingredients without customers having at least a basic knowledge of Eastern Medicine and its principles (it doesn't help that it's been stereotypically associated New Agers in the West!).
I am in AWWW of your BEAUTIFUL skin complexion and knowledge. I appreciate that you are sharing this with us . Thank you Can you do a recommendation for women over 50 ? How to use and where to buy …? I am a NEW Subscriber who is hooked to your channel.🙌👍 Thank you 😊
Odile I am in the 8th cycle. 55 years old. It is very sad the cycle methodology don't honour women who are going through or been through menopause. As if we don't matter anymore. I will look out for your video on mature skin. I look forward to it. Thank you.
Your vidoes are always so helpful and informative; thank you! I would love to learn more about Korean Traditional Medicine, do you have any recommended resources, books, etc. for beginners?
Thank you, it’s really nice of you 🙏🙏 I think a good book to start from is "Korean Medicine: A Holistic Way to Health and Healing", it’s written in a very accessible way and it covers almost all aspects of TKM!
Hello Odile님!! 😄 I'm really happy I came across your channel when I was searching for the Missha essences comparison. Your channel informs us of kbeauty beyond the mainstream "information" out there. Thank you so much for creating such a gem of a channel 🥺🥺 I will be supporting you 쌤~ (๑•᎑< ๑)♡ good luck to more subscribers and high quality videos~ 🍀🍀 I'm 25 with oily t-zone and normal skin for the rest of my face. Do you think I can incorporate anti-aging in my skincare routine? Or is it too early? I am eyeing the Missha probiotic ampoule (the purple bottle) coz it's the most readily available in my area. I hope you can help me!! 🥺😄 thank you in advance~ 😊
Thank you for kind words, I'm really happy to hear my content could be helpful to you 🙏🙏 As for your question, I don't personally think there's a right age to start anti-aging skincare, but it’s mainly because I prefer a preventive approach skincare, rather than relying too much on strong actives (and I think this resonates with the general approach of Korean skincare 😅). At 25, the best thing you can do in terms of anti-aging is protecting your skin from oxidative damage and environmental aggressors. Probiotics and fermented ingredients like the ones contained in the Missha Probio Ampoule are top ingredients for that purpose, so I absolutely agree with your choice. Personally, I really like that ampoule (I haven't tried the latest reformulation though), and I used it a lot in my 20s. I think it could also work for your skin type, because it has a gel-like texture that is not heavy or occlusive on the skin. Hope that helps!
@@OdileMonodTheMonodist Thank you so much for the advice!! 🥰🥰 I tried some of your recommendations before like the I'm from Rice mask and it works~ I was so surprised 😂 thank you so much again and I hope your channel grows into a large family of kbeauty fans. Good luck again!! 🍀🍀 stay safe as well~ 😊
I have been looking on informative videos on Korean skincare for mature skins to help my mother pick a better skincare routine. Your video was fantastic in providing the information and recommendations I needed for my mother. Thank you so much!
Thank you! I work in anti-aging skincare and I've always been frustrated by the little recognition Korean anti-aging skincare brands get outside of Asia so comments like yours mean a lot 🙏
😂😂😂😂 thank you! The downside of having an unusual name it’s that people mispronounce it all the time, in the UK I was always 'Odail', whereas in Korea most people think my name is 'Audrey' 🤣
I just found your channel, and I’m hooked:) Is it better to really follow the regimen for each cycle as you age, or is it okay to jump ahead? This might be a stupid question, and maybe more is not always better. FYI, I’m 30 and I have not started taking care of my skin until now, so I have some fine lines around my eyes and my skin is both acne-prone and dehydrated.
Thank you and not a stupid question at all! 🤓 This theory was originally based on human observation, the practitioner that first came up with this system noticed that most of his patients went through the same body changes around the same age. He carefully collected data on these changes and organised his findings in a book that later went on to become the most important medical text of Oriental medicine. The ages described in this system are meant to be taken as general guidelines, and usually TCM/TKM practitioner perform a full body analysis to determine a patient's precise life cycle. So if you have reason to believe you're experience premature aging (i.e. you have some wrinkles and grey hair at 28), you can absolutely jump ahead. I do it too since I'm prone to premature skin aging 😅 The key strength of Oriental medicine is that it’s an extremely personalised therapy.
I'm thinking about making a dedicated video just for mature skin. I didn't include this in this video because the 7th cycle is considered the last cycle for women (men have 1 additional cycle because they develop later), meaning that there are no significant changes in the female reproductive system after that. The skincare approach is pretty much the same to the one I described for the sixth cycle, but there are some specific recommendations related to diet/lifestyle. Ideally, I was planning to have a professional practitioner of Eastern Medicine to talk about the lifestyle/diet recommendations related to skincare, but I had to push back that kind of content due to the pandemic. Still, the situation in Korea is getting better so hopefully I'll be able to film that video soon!
I am slowly switching my skin care regimen based on your recommendations and introduction of hanbang based products. It would be so helpful if you were to list the products recommendations in the description of the videos for easy reading of the names. Thank you for your videos
Thank you, that's so nice of you 🙏 the product names should be already in the description (at least, they're showing for me 😄) but do let me know if they're not showing for whatever reason and I'll absolutely look into it. Sometimes YT can be quite buggy so I wouldn't be surprised 😑
Hello! It's funny you mention that because I made a dedicated post on IG saying that it’s one of the best affordable options when it comes to Ginseng serums 😎 it contains cultivated red ginseng, so it's not the most powerful form of ginseng out there, and the concentration is also quite low, but for that price point it's definitely the best product you can get. Overall, when it comes to affordable Ginseng products, my advice is to invest in product with decent quality ingredients (even they're not the absolute best in the world), and avoid products that don't offer any information about the source/preparation method etc of their ingredients
actually it's true..after confinement,i was so shocked with my skin changes eventhough i've been taking care my skin very well during pregnancy. I'm no longer feel this is me in the one i looked in the mirror😂
Great video! I tried ordering Donginbi from yesstyle but after a 21 days wait they suggested I should cancel this item 😪 Do you know other easily accesible sources if I live in the EU?
Totally agree when it comes to keeping an eye on Yesstyle, they seem to be getting stock at very random times! Another option would be using a shipping service from Korea, you get the products for cheaper but you need to be conscious of shipping and possible custom taxes. I used to order most of my products through a shipping service called "Koreanbuddy", they have the option to send parcels through airmail, which is pretty affordable and it's rarely stopped in customs when it gets to Europe. You just need to send them a link to the product you'd like (just look up donginbi on naver shopping and you can pick the one at the best price search.shopping.naver.com/search/all?where=all&frm=NVSCTAB&query=%EB%8F%99%EC%9D%B8%EB%B9%84 )and they'll do the rest, I used their service for over 5 years and never had any issues! Hope that helps!
Hi Odile, I stumbled across your channel a week ago and learned so much after watch 3 videos, Lately I've been doing a lot of shopping sheet masks mostly and I've been looking too a lot of skin care products that have red ginseng as I have learned about the benefits now after watching this video I'm definitely going to purchase the Donginbi red ginseng power repair emulsion now my question for you is what would be a good affordable but effective moisturizer to pair with this for someone in the fifth cycle?
Thank you! I think two good affordable options are the moisturisers from Yehwadam's Heaven Grade line or Missha's Chogongjin Sosaeng line. Yehwadam's line is slightly more expensive because they use better quality ginseng but the ginseng used by Chogongjin is not bad either!
Grazie mille ❤️ A Settembre uscirà un video dedicato solo a Donginbi dove parlerò delle differenze e caratteristiche delle varie linee e prodotti, spero potrà esserti utile 🙏
I just found you last week. I just want to thank you for your v informative videos. I wish l found you earlier... lm in my 6th phase of life cycle, trying to prevserve what every l have left. I don't read korean so although in hong kong l see koean products being sold lm clueless to what is good to choose.
Yes you absolutely can! Incidentally, since these products are based on plant oils and animal-origin fats, they're a great option to contrast the downsides of retinoids 😎
Wow…. Very informative. And thanks for sharing. Is this applicable to skin of color? I’m brown skinned and e side in the States. Also what products do you recommend. Thanks again so much,
Ciao Odile! Video molto interessante! Non mi è chiara una cosa però: le età riportare per ogni life cycle fanno riferimento all'inizio del ciclo o alla fine? Io ho 29 anni sono nel quarto o nel quinto?
Hey Odile! I'd like to ask if which is better serum for me the Sulwhasoo or Donginbi? I'm 26 years old. I'd love to hear your thoughts. Anyway. I bought Donginbi products because of youuuuu. I am not aware that I should use anti aging skin care like ginseng if I'd like to have a youthful look in my 30-40. (and that there's a cycle skincare that I should follow) Normally Im just putting a skin care that doesn't contain ginseng. Glad I found your channel. Thank you for sharing this. Looking forward for more hanbang videos
Grazie di cuore Odile per questo bellissimo video, i tuoi consigli che ci imparano tanto sulle origini del skincare Coreano, efficiente e di alta qualità.
Grazie veramente a te! Mi fa veramente piacere leggere questo tipo di commenti e spero veramente di riuscire a trasmettere gli aspetti più autentici dello skincare coreano, che lo rendono unico nel suo genere al di là dei facili stereotipi 🙇
Thank you 😍😍 It's funny that you mention that because my next video that will be out next week is just about acne treatments lol 😂 however, I'll talk about a natural ingredient that is used in Korean Medicine to treat acne and atopic dermatitis, so I guess that would fall under the definition of gentle treatments as well, sorry. In general, Korean skincare has a more preventive approach compared to Western skincare and this is reflected in their products and cosmetic regulations. I.e. the maximum concentration of salicylic acid allowed is 0.5%, which is pretty low compared to, let's say, what is allowed in the US. If you're specifically looking for actives in high concentrations (exfoliating agents, retinoids etc), Western skincare would be a better choice 😔
@@OdileMonodTheMonodist thank you for taking the time to reply and explain! 💗 I can't wait for your new video nonetheless, you taught me a lot about asian skincare products!
Is these products you mentioned here are good enough for mature skin or for female over 50s ? please reply so I could decide to buy it or not ? Thanks in advance ...
Hello! There are only 7 cycles for women (8 for men) because each cycle is defined by hormonal changes and the last significant hormonal change for women is considered menopause, which is why I ended this video with the features and recommendations from the 6th cycle onwards. The 6th cycle is also the most elaborate one that address all different signs of skin aging so the products for this cycle will work even for older women. I hope that makes sense!
Thank you for the information, but the products for women over 40 cost between 200 to 600 dollars! Is it possible to find something closer to friendlier price tag? Thanks!
Not really that high. Maybe for the directly imported price but there are lots of ways to get it for way less. Also overall Korean high end isn’t as expensive as western but performs so much more superior. Also more anti aging formulas naturally costs more due to ingredients and formulation.

@@OdileMonodTheMonodist Thank you Odile. Yes, it does make sense. Very helpful of you to clarify this point. While watching, I didn't make the connection with the hormonal cycles in this way. You are incredibly knowledgeable and your presentation style is superb. As I approach 55, do you recommend I look to the 6th cycle as my guidepost for skin care ingredients? Thank you again!

@@OdileMonodTheMonodist yes, it does make sense from an old perspective...life span has increased a lot. Thank you for the great channel and the work you put into it. It's truly a gem among the many other k-beauty channels
Could you please make a video on what makes some brands like the ones you talk about stand out? I mean a lot ok k-beauty brands have become familiar to lots of us but the ones you cite seem kind of superior, of another level and I would like to know what makes them "better". Thank you
One of the main reasons that made me start my channel was the fact that skincare products and brand that are actually popular in Korea are hardly ever talked about outside the country (especially when it comes to brands designed for a 40+ audience like most brands I mention on this channel), and the other hand, Korean brands that are not even available in Korea are considered to be representative of Korean beauty abroad. The issue here is that the vast majority of the brands that aggressively target the foreign market, are not exactly the highest quality and oftentimes they don't even follow Korean marketing standards. For example, there are many skincare products that contain ginseng (I made a video on the topic), but the quality of these products mainly depends on the type of the ginseng used in the formulas. Ginseng skincare products that are loved and recognised by the Korean public (Donginbi, Sulwhasoo, Whoo etc) are all very transparent about the variety of ginseng used in their products because they know that Koreans are already familiar with the characteristic of the plant that they know the differences between medical ginseng and dietary ginseng. The same cannot be said about the brands that are mainly focused on the foreign market, in my video on ginseng I raised the issue that it was weird that a brand like Beauty of Joseon was allowed to make anti-aging marketing claims without revealing the variety of ginseng used in their products ("anti-aging" is a regulated marketing claim in Korea), and 6 months after I published that video, the Korean government fined Beauty of Joseon for making illegal drug claims about that products, exactly like I mentioned in my video. That's just one example, but these things happen all the time with this kind of 'foreign-friendly' brands, many of these brands take advantage of the language and cultural barrier to sell foreigners low-quality products using the positive image of Korean beauty abroad. I don't know if you watched my latest video on the recent controversy surrounding Korean sunscreens, but that’s another example of Korean brands unknown in their home country engaging in illegal and unethical business practices. Not all these brands are necessarily dishonest, but a lot of them are. As I mentioned in the video on Korean sunscreens, products that are formulated and manufactured in-house by the brands themselves are on a completely different level compared to products developed by no-name third party manufacturers, and most products you see mentioned on this channel are all manufactured in-house by their companies (Whoo, Donginbi, Sulwhasoo, Sooryehan etc)
@@OdileMonodTheMonodist thank you very much for the extensive and knowledgeable response. I've binge-watching your contents since lab muffin's mention and was amazed by the numerous brands you mention almost unknown. BTW your response looks like the script for a video.... Thank you again. P.s. when trying to buy though your affiliate links on stilevana the site sent me to the Europe site. Will you get the commissions all the same?
There are only 7 cycles for women and 8 for men 😌 if you’re interested, I talked about it in more detail in this article themonodist.com/2021/12/17/introduction-to-korean-hanbang-skincare/
Hi there, I wold like to know what you think of the 1899 signature oil by Donginbi, or is there other better products?I’m 41 years old looking for your advice. Thank you
I adore that product, if I had to choose one Donginbi product it would be a close tie between their 1899 essence and the face oil. It's a fantastic product and it's the most concentrated ginseng product they make.
Plant extracts are not necessarily coloured, it mainly depends on how the extract was obtained and processed, extracts obtained from a distillation process for example tend to be translucent.
