Partly because it's unnecessary, partly because asking someone about their sex life can be rude, partly because top and bottom have been associated with male and female, which kinda misses the point of a gay/lesbian couple. Maybe other things that I'm forgetting at the moment.

In short, yes it’s offensive and straight up weird.

This misconception probably comes from women who enjoy male x male material and in these types of things there is almost always a "top" and "bottom". I enjoy said content but for reality I can care less what two gay people's sex life is like. That's their own business, not mine. And yes, I think it is rude to ask such a question. I am a straight female myself.

A lot of people associate top with dominant and bottom with submissive. Which is completely incorrect those thing don't correlate.

But if you're a single gay man, looking for hook ups or a serious relationship, it's importantant to know if someone is top or bottom for sex compatibility. Two tops or two bottoms connot enjoy sex with each other to the fullest.
