Episode 50 is......me!!
Or rather it's a conversation I had with Alex Sigrist early on a Monday morning in a studio in downtown Seoul for Arirang Radio. I had so much fun doing it and thought that some of the ideas and content would make for a great introduction for some people to Korean philosophy. I briefly address the 일체유심조(一切唯心造) of Buddhism and then try to explain the debate between principle (理) and material force (氣) that dominated the Joseon Dynasty (1392 - 1897).
So....here it is. It's audio only. Normal service and conversations about Korea will resume soon.
Thank you for everything.

No wonder the Korean culture is now at the forefront of western consciousness/ culture. It’s reached the Deep South in the US. I never thought I’d see the day, growing up Korean-American. Everyone talks about the “matrix”, this conversation is oh so very relevant. Thank you Professor Tizzard. Once again you’ve brought up some very intriguing dialogue/exchange.

Wow - amazing to think Korean culture has reached that far. Thanks for letting us know where you're listening from. Did you read Crying in H-Mart at all? I really enjoyed that book. Would be very curious to hear how others, including Korean-Americans, reacted to it.

Interesting look at the nuances in eastern philosophy. In terms of guests, I especially enjoy the older guests who give us a glimpse of Korea before the glitz and glam.

@@DavidTizzard I could also tell how much you were enjoying this convo too! I think that your committed fans who've been with you from Podcast #1 ought to get a memento / prize! LOL! It's been such fun being along for the ride. You've progressed so much! (I'm sounding like a professor aren't I? lmao) Your podcast is a journey not just of learning, but also your technical skills....and we are able to appreciate more and more your editing talents and thumbnail artistry with every one! Super proud of you Dave! Here's an idea - how about a challenge to get to Podcast #100 in time for your birthday in 2024? And for Episode #100, you feature yourself again? How about it?

Thank you so much!!! And yes, much more to be said for sure. I wanted to talk about the story of Monk Wonhyo and the Skull Water (원효 대사 해골물) when explaining Buddhism but we were kinda pushed for time unfortunately.

I made my way to your podcast because of your article in the korean times posted on Instagram. And I am really grateful for your deep insights. That is what I was looking for. Thank you ever so much. Listening here from Vienna, Austria.

Wow - that is so cool. It's really mind-blowing to think that people so far away might be listening and reading. I get lots of imposter syndrome, and it's hard work doing everything, but comments like yours make it all worth while. Thank you for finding us. And do please let us know if you have any thoughts or ideas about any of the content :)

The Principle/Material thing reminded me of Platonism. Really is nothing new under the sun, huh?
@DavidTizzard
@DavidTizzard Год назад
Absolutely. Though you could flip it and say that, for Asian people, Plato's theory of the forms reminds them of Confucianism. You are right though in that there are great similarities. Asian thought does have the void: the nothingness, the 여백, the eternal emptiness from which everything like the Tao arises. Which can be seen through the concept of "dependent co-arising". I would also have liked to have gone more into 일체유심조(一切唯心造) and the story of Monk Wonhyo and the Skull Water but time was unfortunately against me.

@@DavidTizzard Thank you for your reply Professor! I am wondering if you ever got around to that book 'The New Asian City: Three-Dimensional Fictions of Space and Urban Form' by Jini Kim Watson which I recommended on a previous lecture of yours? I am bringing it up because your discussion of Korean philosophy reminded me a lot of South Korean 'Minjung' works like '난장이가 쏘아 올린 작은 공' by Cho Se-Hui or 삼포가는 길 by Hwang Sok-Yong where traditional Korean thought is abruptly forced to deal with 'new ways of thinking' that come with modernity and globalisation. Keep up the incredible content : D
@DavidTizzard
@DavidTizzard Год назад
@@wheresmyeyebrow1608 This is a great analysis and reminds me that I want to somehow explore an episode on the Minjung movement. I teach the minjung movement in my class and loved 이남희 교수님s book on the subject (I also recently read some of 화석영's work for a book review I wrote). Just need to find someone here in Korea who might be able to explain it to us from their perspective. Any suggestions? Also, I must confess I haven't read The New Asian City yet. My collection of unread books grows ever larger. I will eventually find my way there though. Thank you for the reminder.
