Located in Nagano, Matsumoto (長野県松本市) we have a kofun which has a bit of a different background.
It's a stone mounded kofun (積石塚), which is a kofun mound made purely by stones, as opposed to the more widely used practice of using soil to build the kofun mound. Whilst this method also existed in limited numbers elsewhere in Japan, it's a common burial system of the Korean Goguryeo era. As this kofun lies in a region that was home to many Korean immigrants during the kofun period it's suggested that this kofun may have been built as the burial place for a Korean person during those times.
Found during excavations of the tomb were items such as a flower pattern mirror, an iron axe and arrowhead, a knife, small glass beads, a talc flywheel used for spinning thread, and horse saddle attachments. In addition, a collection of Hajiki and Sueki pottery used in the "Omatsuri" (rituals) held at the time of the burial were found in a surrounding ditch.
It's a pretty cool little tomb in a really nice location, but yes the handrails are a totally unnecessary addition!

Q: What am I watching here ?
A: You are watching footage of a "kofun/古墳" - kofun are tombs in Japan that were created during the Kofun Period (roughly between the 3rd and 7th Century AD) - this era was preceded by the Jomon and Yayoi periods, and followed by Asuka, Nara and so on. These tombs were built as burial chambers for people from Japanese imperial families and other people of higher status in society during those days. The most well-known and generally largest tombs are found around Kyoto and Osaka, but they are found all over Kansai, Kanto, Tohoku etc., and even in other parts of Japan such as Shikoku and Kyushu. Figures vary greatly, but some sources state there are over 160000 of these kofun in Japan. At times you will see haniwa on and around kofun - haniwa are terracotta figures which were made in various shapes, including being formed as people and animals.
Have a read of the the Wikipedia article for more information : en.wikipedia.o...
Ideally I'd like to build a kofun appreciation community of sorts, but that is just a dream right now. You can hit me up on:

My Sunday treat. You get barrow's constructed of cobbles in Scotland but the burial chamber is usually in and under the cobbles, not placed on top. There are also cobble built structures further south, like Mayburgh henge, south of Penrith

Yes the chamber on top is "curious". I know it happens a lot between UK and Aus but funny you mention Penrith, we have a Penrith here in western Sydney too, no.1 rugby league team for the last couple years.

@@japankofun Is their home ground subject to visits from the Nepean? Spent some time staying at Baulkham Hills 15 years ago but I think the closest I got was Richmond or Parramatta

@@FrothNinja Small world, without giving away too much online Baulkham Hills & Parramatta are pretty local to me (Richmond is further out west, a touch north of Penrith but both places are at the foot of the Blue Mts). The ground out at Penrith doesn't flood (that I recall?) but yes it's pretty close to the river there.
