Ancient and Medieval Japan, Korea, and Vietnam is a complete overview of these 3 East Asian states from their formation until around 1500. We will go through the Japanese Ancient (Jomon, Yayoi, and Kofun), Classical (Asuka, Nara, Heian), and Feudal (Kamakura, Muromachi) periods, before heading to Korea and Vietnam, and the links they all had with China.
This will be our 6th episode in the Medieval World mega-documentary!
0:00 Japan (Ancient, Classical, Feudal, Culture)
29:36 Korea (Gojoseon, Three Kingdoms, Goryeo, Joseon)
38:40 Vietnam (Dong Son, Chinese Rule, Dai Viet)
The Medieval World Series:
• Phase 2: The Medieval ...
Welcome to The Medieval World series! This series is meant to summarize broad topics in history and balances political history and events, with social/daily life, and culture. If you've watched our History of the World documentary, this series is a perfect next step. The videos are standalone, but presented in a chronological fashion. The series will be divided into 8 videos about the Medieval Period, which we call Phase 2. Once these 8 videos are completed, we will move onto Phase 3, but this project will be considered completed, and compiled into ONE MEGA-DOCUMENTARY containing all 8 parts.

Do you know how Japan country created? Probably not. There was an Emperor in China during the Han Dynasty believed in immortality. So the emperor send a group of his people to find an elixir of immortality. If they cannot find it, they are not allow to come back. Therefore, no one can find the immortality elixir for the emperor. They migrate to the island now it's JAPAN.

@@simbatortie9684 you must be Chinese to say like that. Japanese people had been living in Honsu island from the Old Stone Age (100,000 - 30,000 BC). The Chinese courting was sent to Japan to find the elixir of immortality is Xu Fu 徐福, he lived under Qin Dynasty to serve Qin Shi Huang, who was trying to find method to live an endless life in order to rule over his empire forever. Xu Fu is said to have introduced many new plants and techniques to ancient Japan, although the texts are written much later. The local worship of Xu Fu as the "god of farming", "god of medicine" and "god of silk" by the Japanese is attributed to these achievements. In conclusion, Xu Fu actually did help Japanese people to have a better agriculture, medicine and writing scripts back then but he did not create Japan.

I have always wondered and this explains why the Japanese, Korean and old Vietnamese characters are so similar to the Chinese characters. Of course, later Vietnam adopted the Roman alphabets with the French colonization. And, they all have the same new year celebrations, unlike the SEA countries like Cambodia, Thailand, Lao, and Burma. We celebrate the new year in April.
@Flyin_k
@Flyin_k 11 месяцев назад
all Japanese/Korean/Vietnamese 's written histories were engraved on bamboos in Chinese letters before they officially created their own language systems. In ancient times, only the riches can be able to learn Chinese characters. If you have visited in Japan / Korea/ Vietnam you would see all their historical sites , temples all written in Chinese. If you google South Korean streets in 1950 -1960's which is not too long ago, you would see all their businesses are signed in Chinese, and only a few in korean.

for Vietnam it is "Nom". When foreigners look at it, they say it looks exactly like the characters "han". But for Chinese people, when looking at the word nom. they said they didn't understand anything. it goes completely against the han language. However, it still has a strong Han character, so people often call it han-nom. Today, Vietnam has reformed its writing into Latin letters due to the influence of Western missionaries during the Indochina period.

Your video is well made. Your efforts are commendable. However, there are some regrets. You talked about the history of Japan, Korea, and Vietnam in this video. In the case of Japan, which has the shortest history of civilization among these three countries, more than 29 minutes were spent to explain in great detail. About 8 minutes were spent each on the history of Korea and Vietnam, which established civilization even longer than Japan. I know that there are many people who are interested in Japan, but personally, I think it would have been better if there was a more detailed and long explanation about the history of Korea and Vietnam.

I love the general pangea phase which pre dated the stone age. It would have been a very interesting time to live in because you had settlements and agriculture being invented during this time. I think the Jomon would have had the technology before 300 bc, they probably would have had it for about 300 years before the Yayoi arrived. My church is The trinity, Zen Buddhist and Shinto Kami, the Buddha is a wise prophet, but for Shinto, it's obvious that the sun is not the God, that, the creator of the universe is the God, and I believe that there is the holy spirit, and I recognize it in the expression of the kami from ancient times before christ. It's consistent with my business and my economy, and the zen aspect is our meditative time for our own relaxation, but Jesus is the son of god and the bible is the original copy, everything the original, I just know how to combine really awesome Christianity with Zen Buddhism and Shinto that all! Farming would likely have reaced Japan in 2000 bc.

The culture of China is an amalgamation of many smaller cultures in history. If you are culturally savvy and interested in learning, you will also find that most of the great empires that once existed spanned many territories, most of which are influenced by subdued cultures, not vice versa. Rome was influenced by Greece, Mongolia was influenced by China, and Britain was influenced by India. I mean, the real culture of an empire is not pure (so to speak, adulterated). Going back to China, there have been countless times in history that the Han empire (mainly Chinese) was invaded by other empires from the north or northeast, or during civil wars (ethnic not must be Han people). But unlike conquering a small country, they would bring their wealth or slaves back to the capital, burning the remnants of the culture they conquered (such as the Dali kingdom in Yunnan or the Tibetan empire in Tibet ), most of these peoples claim to be kings and have capitals somewhere in the 'central plain'. These empires were very large with a population of up to tens of millions of people - contains many ethnic groups forced to assimilate, with a highly organized and tight social system, the kings here all considered themselves masters of the vast land, so most of the documents or relics remain intact without being destroyed. That is why it is possible to see the history of China from a great distance, or Japan (located on an isolated island) rather than Korea or Vietnam.To elaborate on this, after thinking about it, you may also realize that this is also how empires are recognized as creators of one or the other (while in fact they have beaten steal or rob these seemingly useful inventions from newly occupied territories - and change the history in the history books the way they want to be told). And so a large part of history is buried forever.

12:04 as of this period, this is quite incorrect. The favorite weapon of the samurai was the bow. Samurai primarily fought as horse archers and duels between samurai of this time were not sword duels, they were horse archery duels. It was of such importance at the time that being a warrior was referred to as kyuuba no michi, the way of horse and bow. Sword became the most popular weapon only in the Edo Period, when it became their status symbol. Bushido was also not a term used at this time. The first written mention of it is from year 1616 (though it would be read as mononofu no michi) but the whole concept itself is largely a concept made up after the samurai ceased to exist.

Partially agreed. However, it is also true that samurais actually fought with swords in the battlefield. ↓Sorry for my long sentence in advance. 1. Qi Jiguang's "Ji Xiao Xin Shu: A Commentary on Long Sword" (戚継光, 紀効新書: 長刀解) says, "We are prepared to guard ourselves from their attack. Firearm is the effective weapon to kill them from a long distance. However, they rush into a close range where they can attack and stab us all at once. We have thus far let them come close to our soldiers very often while our muketeers are loading another slug. We are unable to stop their furiousness. Their swords are light enough to handle easily, and very long. Meanwhile, our soldiers are too slow in their movements when their enemies come near to them. Our swords are not so efficient a weapon for the soldiers to cope with the opponents instantly after they throw their muskets away. Therefore, our troops should be provided with swords in the Japanese way as well." 2. In addition, Joseon military manual "Muyedobotongji"(武芸図譜通志, 무예도보통지) says like this: "When we face off against the Japanese army, they would make a dash for our troops desperately. Thus, even though our soldiers wear their swords, and have spears in their hands, we are defeated before unsheathing the sword, without crossing the spear-head." 3. Qu Da Jun, "Guang-dong Xin-yu", or "A New Glossry of Kwangtung" (屈大均, 広東新語) says, "When the Japanese move with full force, they look swaying like the wind. They will always intrude into their enemy lines in a small number of soldiers, but great number of our troops can not fight them back. The way the Japanese handle their sword is that they hold the longer sword in one hand on guard for enemy's attack, and use the shorter one in another hand to deliver a fatal stab."
@revbladez5773
@revbladez5773 Год назад
@@lupimali9504 That is later period stuff though. Also, by the time firearms existed, the majority of people in Japanese armies were ashigaru, not samurai. By that point the samurai were only the elite of the army while in earlier periods, they basically were the whole army. Finally, while swords were used in combat, they were never the primary weapon. They were used only if the primary weapon, which is a polearm, bow or a gun, became unusable.

The samurai that most Westerners think of, are from Muromachi and Sengoku periods. And most of them were infantry warriors. From the middle of Muromachi, as the size of the battle increases, samurais quickly turn into foot soldiers. Samurai who rode horses were called kiba, and they also dismounted when real close battle begins. The only ones riding horses throughout entire battle were commanders like daimyo, hatamoto. So samurais are first and foremost infantry, foot figters. Contrary to what Westerners had indoctrinated themselves with, the katana was the samurai's 'main' weapon on the battlefield. @@revbladez5773somehow youtube think my long comment as spam... have you ever studied history properly? rejecting solid records, only make superficial denials in front of specific facts. This shows you got brainwashed. Japanese war battles at the time typically involve a lot of shooting before hand-to-hand combat, but once close combat takes place, Eastern historians have recorded how they fought, with much more solid than Western historians. I will just give you 3 historical records from the two countries closest to Japan. If you want more, tell me. 1.chinese record, Why do we always lose to the japanese? When swords stick together, we are always much worse than them. This was like a contest between the so-called strongest and the weakest....Moreover, our soldiers lost their courage when they came in dancing and brandishing their long blades. 戚繼光, 紀效新書 16c. 2.chinese record, Katanas are knives made by Japanese veterans, and they are elaborately trained, light and sharp, so swords from other regions do not reach them. The dazzling brilliance of the sword's body terrifies those who see it, and its usage is that it jumps left and right, are hide its intentions in a strange way, so it cannot be measured by manpower. Therefore, our polearms were always defeated by their swords. 程沖斗 『單刀法選』 单刀说. 3.korean record, Their Swordsmanship has a long history... Jumping in and out dozens of times is like a brute beast, always compete with each other. They using the back of the sword in the midst of swinging the sword, strikes the blade, so they are not injured in the end. The technique of skillfully avoiding it and the technique of skillfully bumping into it are clearly state of the art. It can be said that the ingenuity is mysterious, and there is no one who is not a swordmaster, and the accurate like a machine. What they believe in is the long sword and the iron ring, the iron ring pours down like rain, and the swords is like a standing forest. 정탁, 『약포집』8.15.1593 Of course, using long spears to gain a tactical advantage in large-scale battles is a common part of most war histories, but if you study East Asian history, while East Asian battles consistently depict them as fearsome charging swordsmen like some kind of martial race with swords, it seems westerner found their own common sense of what Japanese samurai 'should' be like. Although no one told them to, they started to worship katana and samurai on their own, refuting each other on the Internet, and suddenly they were caught up in the underdog effect, in confirmation bias, as if there were too many superstitions about samurai that they needed to correct. And now they act like they know better than anyone else, even though they cannot even interpret single East Asian history material.

What South Korea Doesn't Want to See (Janggubong Ancient Tomb) There is a Janggubong Ancient Tomb in Haenam, Jeollanam-do, South Korea. It is the largest ancient tomb on the Korean Peninsula. Excavations were conducted here from October 2020 to February 2021. Investigations were conducted in the outer tomb and inside the stone chamber. South Korean archaeologists are said to have been deeply shocked by this survey. "This is going to be bad..." Because it was made and had the same impression as KOFUN ("ancient grave", megalithic tombs or Tumulus) in Kyushu, Japan. The Janggubong Ancient Tomb is a keyhole-shaped burial mound estimated to have been built in the 6th century. On the other hand, keyhole-shaped burial mounds called Kofun appeared in Japan in the 3rd century, 300 years ago. Looking at it this way, the keyhole-shaped burial mounds (Kofun) should have originated in Japan and spread to the Korean Peninsula. That means that the southernmost Janggubong Ancient Tomb in South Korea may be the tomb of a Japanese ruler. Among Japanese intellectuals, there are those who preach the Mimana Nihonfu theory that ``Japan ruled the southern part of the Korean Peninsula from the 4th to 6th centuries.'' (Mimana Nihonfu; or Yamato no Mikotomochi is the governing institution of Japan which is said to have been located in Mimana in the southern area of the Korean Peninsula in ancient times.) This finding supports that theory. Archaeologists in South Korea stopped excavating the Janggubong Burial Mound halfway through and closed it again. The ostensible reason was "because of Covid-19." In Japan, "Put a lid on something that stinks." (same meaning as ``Sweep the trouble under the carpet.''), but it probably refers to this kind of time. The more Korean archaeologists look into this South Korean Kofun, the more evidence they may come up with that it is an ancient Japanese tomb. This must be unbearable for Koreans. Once it is established that this is an ancient Japanese tomb, one must admit that the southern part of the Korean peninsula was part of Japan in the 4th to 6th centuries. Such a thing is absolutely disgusting for South Koreans. A professor of history at Seoul National University said, "We need to carefully determine whether the people buried in the Janggubong Ancient Tomb are Koreans or Japanese." If you stop the excavation in the middle, you can leave room for saying, "That place might be a Korean tomb." In South Korea, people have been taught that "In ancient times, Korea was more advanced in culture and technology than Japan. Koreans cannot be ruled by the Japanese, who were behind in everything!" . Janggubong Ancient Tomb has the power to blow away such Korean teachings. For South Koreans, the inside of an ancient burial mound is truly "something that must not be seen." South Korean government officials and social activists have often said, ``Japan has not reflected on its past. However, South Korea seems to be reluctant to learn true history. The excavation of the Janggubong Ancient Tomb did not involve media from South Korea. For South Korea, it will be troublesome if something bad is found and reported.

The commonly accepted view in the USA along with several European countries is, Japan governed (or dominated) the southern part of the Korean peninsula in ancient times. For instance,: "Baekje was located in the south western area of the Korean peninsula, and its history is supposed to be included in Japan's national history on the whole." (Barron's SAT Subject Test: World History, 3rd Ed., December 1, 2020) Likewise, according to Barron's another text "AP: Human Geography Premium," "It was in the 4th century that ancient Japan established the first foothold in the continental region of China. Thenceforth, Japan had held a ruling position in the Korean Peninsula for 300 years. However, Japan lost fight for ruling of the peninsula to Tang dynasty." (Barron's AP: Human Geography Premium, August 4, 2020) Accordingly, even if the Koreans try to hide the truth of the ancient tombs, in their land, it is nothing but a useless struggle.

Before the establishment of Goguryeo, there were three Korean countries on the Korean Peninsula called Samhan. Samhan (or Three Han), is the collective name of the Byeonhan, Jinhan, and Mahan. Later, Samhan evolved into Baekje and Silla. But South Koreans regard Goguryeo established by the foreign Buyeo people in the north beyond Samhan, as the kingdom of their ancestors. In fact, it was the Goguryeo who later invaded Baekje and Silla. In 668, China's Tang Empire united with Silla, completely destroyed Goguryeo. In 669, Tang Empire occupied the main territory of Goguryeo and forcibly moved the young adults of Goguryeo to the Tang territory, only leaving old and weak inhabitants in the original land. - Goguryeo was only a neighbor of the Samhan, Goguryeo initially established on the territory of China‘s Commanderies of Han; Goguryeo was a country established by foreigners; After the demise of Goguryeo, the main citizens of Goguryeo were integrated into the Tang Empire, and the main territory was occupied by the Tang. - If S.k can claim that Goguryeo, who once invaded their true ancestors, belongs to S.K, then I suggest that the S.K also claim that Japan, who once invaded them, belongs to S.K.

@n5kn7gy3r what does that have to do with anything? Only the nobility were able to write in Chinese. Similar to how the educated Chinese study and write in English today for research studies etc. They have to learn english if they want to keep up with our scientific community. Same thing back then, the Koreans themselves didn't have a writing system so they simply adopted the Chinese characters later on. The rest of the Korean people weren't able to write or speak Chinese nor did it suit their language. That is why Hangul was created, it was created for the peasants so that they can get educated.

@@baekdumountaintiger5701 Do you know why? Because these so-called outsiders who conquered China were originally influenced by Chinese civilization. The second point is that there are many Han Chinese in these so-called foreign regimes. When the Qing Dynasty entered the pass, it was the Ming Dynasty that surrendered to the Qing Dynasty's army and destroyed the Ming Dynasty. It was Wu Sangui who went to Burma and killed the last emperor of the Ming Dynasty.So in fact, Chinese civilization has long surpassed the state form. In contrast, the so-called South Korea is nothing more than learning from China in the past and now learning from Anglo-Saxon. (Shinto) Shang-Di Lord of Heaven and the Four Heavenly Kings: Jikokuten, Tamonten, Zochoten, and Komokuten . Revelation 7:1 KJV “And after these things I saw four angels standing on the four corners of the earth, holding the four winds of the earth, that the wind should not blow on the earth, nor on the sea, nor on any tree.” Mandate of Heaven: To be Counted Righteous always meant to reject Evil absolutely never allowed to justify evil crime lawlessness in heart thus when being made aware of Law (Truth) thus taking God at his word (God's word (law) made flesh: Jesus Christ replacement of First Man & the Lord of Heaven in the Flesh the literal Body of God) hence obedience and sacrifice the test of the heart (In full legal agreement with/Listening to God). The Heart is what has always been judged (pure) as good or evil. (Once learned made aware of Law, All People held to account judged by Law known/Israel.) El-Elyon (Most High), Ahura Mazda "Wise Lord" (Persia) Zoroastrianism, Egyptian Book of the Dead, Ancient China Temple of Heaven (Shang-Di), Xiongnu Mongols (Tengri), (Egypt) Ancient of Days, all prime cultures prove the only first religion and priesthood of humanity the Melchizedek Priesthood Jesus Christ (completed) fulfilled forever as the living High Priest of the Promised Virgin Birth Covenant: Christianity is the fulfilled Melchizedek Priesthood through Jesus Christ the only promised savior redeemer who fulfilled the law and prophets and his Orthodox Church (All Holy Trinity Church Branches of correct doctrine is counted as Orthodox) is the only Functioning prophetic Holy Spirit Lead Priesthood of the 12 Tribes of Israel. Children, Free Will, & The Tower of Babel cultural language divide delays Jesus Christ's reign as when he claims throne he is immediately responsible for judging all both living and dead. All ancients knew of the promised resurrection of the Dead (Reincarnation), virgin birth, and Judgement Day of the Righteous and Wicked souls; To be perfect is to be complete according to set standard, mathematical law of absolutes good vs evil. The true opposite of love is unholy selfishness, the epitome of pride is self-righteousness (unmerited value/unlawfully agreed). People confuse pride with its righteous opposite which is Glory/Honor all ancients sought. Good is that of Truth/Holy Lawful Order, & Justice. Evil is that of Lies, unlawful disorder, chaos. Clean vs Unclean, Holy Lawful Hate vs Unholy Criminal Hate. Jesus Christ is the Law and the Test of Faith & Heart concerning righteousness and ritual purity (Ritual Purification) "Sanctification" that which is Holy; whereby Jesus Christ (The Lamb of God) the word of God in the flesh is the standard of measure how a person is judged as good or evil based on their choice to receive God's payment blood covering sacrifice through Jesus Christ's Perfect Lawful Life. Faith=Trust. (KJV Bible for English) (Romans Ch.10) (Eternal Life) If you confess with the mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that the creator (supreme spirit) Lord of Heaven hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.” Jesus Christ the only worthy Emperor King of Kings Alpha Omega of Humanity has the authority and dominion of the first man and is the Eldest of the Human Race (Virgin Birth promised by Creator before Cain & Able) and First Born resurrected unto Glorification from the Dead. Israel is the church body of Christ Family of God; all people of any nation of the world that choose Righteousness, Honor, & Glory are citizens of Israel the Most High Lord of Heaven's Kingdom. Peace = Jesus Christ the only begotten son of God born from a virgin with no corruption from Adam's Seed. Islam is Satans Counterfeit of The 12 Tribes of Israel. Most people in world (All Ethnicities) including Arabs that identify as muslims are actually Israelites by Blood (All saved by Blood of Messiah Jesus Christ counted as Israelites co-heirs by Blood of Jesus Christ). #Zoroastrianism proves virgin birth (3 Wise Men Kings from East). (Psalm 88 Bottomless Pit) Every action has equal opposite reaction one reaps what they sow by covenant. As with the Israelites the Living God sent Holy Angels to cultures such as the Native Americans giving them a form of the Gift of Tongues (prayer language whereby the Blood of Jesus Christ by word law promise of God virgin birth covenant was invoked for healing etc. binding and sealing evil spirits). Many Native Americans are mixed with Israelite Tribes of Asher, Gad, and Nephtali. There were pure hearted people and evil "witch" magicians and false prophets using evil spirits (all ghosts are demons unlawful spirit creatures from Fallen Angels/humans having unnatural sex with animals) among the Native Americans as with all groups that were sent the law and real prophets of God. Zoroastrianism is named after Zarathustra/Zoroaster a Prophet of the Living God whereby that "religion" is actually fully tied too thus derived from the Melchizedek Covenant. The Emperors of Ancient China acted as High Priest for the Kingdom people and land sacrificing a lamb at the Temple of Heaven to the Lord of Heaven just the same as the Israelites were instructed. Read Acts 2:17 KJV. I am a jew by blood and orthodox christian and one of the Prophets appointed unto this Generation. I am a literal witness that Jesus Christ is Alive! I have seen and spoken to Angels and Demons, Astral Projection out of body experiences, I have heard the audible voice of the Living Eternal Creator Father God as with all the Prophets before me (Fully Sober all my life). Revelation 2:5 “Remember therefore from whence thou art fallen, and repent, and do the first works; or else I will come unto thee quickly, and will remove thy candlestick out of his place, except thou repent.” Ephesians 4:30 “And grieve not the Holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption.” A person is only Born Again Saved when Glorified made incorruptible, Salvation is a Gift of God it is God's choice by the Word of God, the person living in full agreement with God his law and truth New Covenant, Pure Hearted upon physical death. Abide in the Vine Covenant, a person either walks Holy sanctified within lawful covenant Will of God or walks outside of God's Will the covenant truth Holy Natural Law of God. I am a literal witness that Jesus Christ is Alive with a Glorified body superior to the Holy Angels in Function and Authority; the Glorified Body humanity had before sin the curse of death Decaying bodies. 1:10. . from 2,300 to 1,700 years ago Koreans with iron and staple agriculture conquered the islands. Mostly men because of quite long distance over the sea. These people are called Yayoi. The aborigines are called Jomon. The conquerers got fused with the aborigines forming the Japanese people. People in Hotkaido and Okinawa have more Jomon genes. People in Kyushiu and Southern Honshu have the highest level of Yayoi genes . This is called 'the dual DNA strucure of the Japanese'. The closest gene types with Jomons are Austrailian aborigines and the Anderman people. Korean and Japanese languages are isolates. Japanese is the largest and Korean is the second largest. An isolate is a language with no kins. The two language have the identical syntax (grammer) but phonics and basic words are totally different. This phenomena happens when male strangers conquer the the aborigines and marry the local females. .childetn speaks mother's tongue with father's grammer. .
