A graduate of West Point, COL Mike Dowe served in the Korean War, where he was captured and held as a prisoner of war. There, he witnessed the heroism of one of America's most beloved Medal of Honor recipients - Father Emil Kapaun. A decorated battlefield chaplain, Fr. Kapaun tended to the sick and wounded, procured food, and raised the spirits of his fellow prisoners of war. Fr. Kapaun would pass away in the prison camp. Decades later, he was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor by President Obama. And in 2021, his long-lost remains were finally identified.

My grand father was a navy guy in Korea on the USS Missouri he never really talks about his experience but he lost 2 brothers in ww2 had a third wound there and his 4th brother fought all the way till Vietnam from ww2. He deserves an interview idk how much longer he has to live.

Those Korean veterans were badasses. I grew up next to one when I was a young boy. In his older years he worked at a liquor store. Two armed Knuckleheads came in to Rob him one by the door and one in front of the counter in front of him. At the time this man was about 57 years old. The robber looked at him and told him I'm going to kill you old man. The older Korean veteran look back at him and smiled and said no you're not. Suddenly Dove at an angle and at the same time pulled a 38 special and shot them both in the head in a full dive.You could tell when he talked about it though that he felt bad that he had to do it. So it was never talked about.

Phuc those robber’s . Think about what they would do to anyones loved ones if they had power over them, laughing while getting off on the whole thing . Just keep that in Mind and How those scum would brag about it. I cry thinking about every law officer killed in the line of duty and every victim who was not able to do what Your Veteran Friend Did. They died wanting to defend loved ones and I often wonder if their last thoughts were worrying about what would happen to their loved ones without their protection in a world where their killers are left to live on and victimize and enslave their loved ones.

If your father, uncle, whatever.... was in Korea.....and you heard the stories.....you would have a much different perspective on the chinese than our main stream media has. Or....our current administration.

Aware ones are thankful and know it. But I should also add that 130,000 S. Korean soldiers were KIA and 450,000 were WIA in the war. And 2-3 million civilians were killed. And one in ten South Korean was separated from immediate family (mom, dad, kids, siblings) never to see them again. Also, S. Korean rotated 320,000 combat troops on 1 year tour through the Vietnam conflict. Largest contribution of combat troops to fight along US since the end of WW2.

My grandpa was Marine in Korea. He never talked about it, but I know he saw some stuff and suffered from PTSD. Interviews like this help me see what he might have gone through over there.

I am reading ‘the Miracle of Fr. Kapaun.’ I did not know you graduated from the West Point.’ No wonder you were so brave. I am glad that I can see and hear you.

Korea, often called the forgotten war, my father was an infantry lieutenant there. He and me had long conversations after my 24 years and two wars. I miss him alot helped me through some dark times.

A friend of mine was in Korea.U.S.Army.He described how cold it was and how the Chinese kept coming in waves.Swore he would never eat powdered eggs again!!

My dad was in the Korean War He got a purple heart and a bronze star, he never talked about why he got them. We kinda knew why judging by the scar on his left arm, but never asked. Thank you for these kind of puts it into perspective of why he couldn’t tell his own sons. At 55 I know why now…god bless this man and thank you

My grandfather Jesse Johnson Sr was Korean War P.O.W .... he was a high ranking African American. He made it back but I don't know much about his life, or my grandfather's side of the family.

I used to love going to the local elks club in wilton/saratoga NY with my grandpa george matthei...His korean war vet buddies were awesome to be around, Plus the elks had a bowling alley in it too! I miss those guys! TRUE AMERICANS! Those shriners parades were a blast!

My uncle Bill , my Dad's brother, was at Chosan during the Korean War and he was obsessed with always having firewood afterwards because he damn near froze to death . He talked about it occasionally but not often. I think he spent the rest of his life trying to forget about it

Another excellent interview. Thank you for sharing it. I had a great uncle, Raymond E. Martin, that according to his headstone was Captain, Headquarters Company, 19th Regiment, 24th Division, US Army, but I don't know if that was the unit he was in at the time of his death in 1951.

One of My Maternal Grandfather’s good friends and drinking buddies was on the staff of General Dean and was with Dean moments before Dean was captured while knocking out T -34 tanks with a Bazooka. Dean was very Brave and urged His Men to escape capture to fight again another day. Unlike other’s Dean later remarked that He was no Hero and was stupid enough to get Himself captured, a very humble and brave leader. I do not wish to discredit anyone who served or was taken prisoner. My own paternal Grandfather barely escaped capture with His life at the 1896 Battle of Adwa Abyssinia. He was awarded a medal for being there. Who but those who were there can even begin to imagine what is like to find themselves in such a debacle.

7,140 Americans were taken prisoner in Korea. Just over 3,700 came back - the worst attrition rate since the Civil War. Let us not forget.

His last sentence is so true. At the end of WW1 the job has not been finished with Germany and the exact same situation has developed with NKO. It’s why currently Ukraine has no choice but to finish the job with Russia too.

Let's see now ummm we had posters of red China being our enemy in our cities tv ads same thing and now here we come!? Who the hell didn't anticipate a little trouble?! Let's admit a mistake? Nah China bad!! We good not bad. BTW my father served many times in Korea and Vietnam I have never said a bad thing about him. He was the speaker 60 year reunion special forces. I have been around and people love their kids no matter where. I'm not saying we are bad or anyone is. Just understand and don't fall for the propaganda. Yes we have that sort of thing.
