Kersey, this is one of the most fun and cute reaction videos I have seen in a while. I could not stop laughing throughout almost all of it. It was like observing 3 siblings watching a program. Absolutely delightful. As a foreigner, it was also interesting to get the perspective from 3 different young adults. Now I would also like to hear the perspective from middle aged and older South Korean people. Thank you for this really entertaining video!!

One of my besties when i studied in Paris - she's a fit and beautiful 40 years old with 3 dogs a cat, don't want to be married and she's a director of a high end brand fashion based in HK. So you're not alone, more girls focus on career. She used to travel a lot before pandemic.
My mom died when I was young and when I was watching that scene in Hometown Cha Cha Cha, I was so shocked. Kinda sad to hear that there are actually Koreans that think this is such a negative thing.. Anyway, loved the video!!
The later scenes explains why the dad wants her married into a big family. Her mom died when she was young and he felt he didn't give her enough love. He wants her to be loved by inlaws. In a way i understand his reservations.
I have heard about this aspect of South Korean culture before and I have always been mystified by it. Being a Westerner, the whole view point of marriage as some sort of contract or arrangement between 2 families is very foreign to me. It has not been that way in Anglophile society (excepting the British Royal family) for several hundred years. I am guessing that the tendency to look down on people lacking 2 living, married parents is possibly some hold over from those times?!?? In any case, I am still trying to wrap my head around that particular prejudice.
My sister married and lived a good life in bless even though having no parents since she was a teen. Its just something preferred by the other partner's parents in my opinions.
Indian here. My husband lost his mom when he was a kid and his dad passed couple of years later. The scene where the female lead tried to convince her parents to accept her love seems to be taken out of my life. I clearly remember saying to my parents that it's not a sin or a curse if he lost his parents early.
The part when parents judging him, I was cringing because I thought that is impossible to happen in reality, I never thought those things are real I am in shock now. Loosing your parent and people judging you is too much.
It happens in alot if asian countries even today. I myself have experienced it as a Pakistani. Over here being from NUST University is such a big deal. It's like your golden ticket to anything, plus your social status and being child of a divorced parent or orphan also comes with some bitter realities. You won't be accepted everywhere... one more interesting fact I would add is that if someone has a disease for instance "cancer" or any other serious medical condition in their family tree people would avoid getting married to that family in fear of having their next generation having any serious medical Ailment which sounds absolutely ridiculous to me but it happens ....
I'm from India and I'd say all these cultural traits are present in our cultures too. The social position thing, parents and the upraising stuff, college etc all are exactly how it is in korea. I have lots of Muslim friends too, so I can tell that these ideologies are present in their cultures as well. I feel like a lot of asian or conservative societies in general would actually relate to this.
I would say some of these apply only for North India. In the South, nobody gives a flying F about where you graduated from as long as you are earning well. The craze to get into IITs is also wayyy lesser.

The part about being an orphan/elder lady is even worse in "Something in Rain", that's when i realized how people are discriminated & judged in Korean society for stuff they cant even change about themself.

I think that HomCha is quite progressive in terms of (not so) subtly challenging social norms. They even have side story about a lesbian girl. I wonder if K dramas should start casting darker skinned actors/actresses too, even if for the side stories, just so that they are used to seeing different ethnicities in the media and can see that dark skinned people are normal human beings, and not aliens.
I thought it was progressive too with the message that there are more important things in life than education, possessions and status. But then they had to ruin it by making him a genius with a prestigious degree. Why couldn't he just be an intelligent, hard working, kind-hearted handy man?
I'd love to see a new K-drama where the guy isn't poor but a minimalist and saves all his money so his lifestyle looks as though he's lower class but Uber rich because he doesn't care about social status!!

Hometown Cha Cha highlighted alot of social, economical etc etc realities of life and it was a breathe of freshness from the "norm" in dramas. Great video review guys. 👍🏼
This was the first Kdrama I liked. Most people recommend me teen Kdramas and I just can’t with them, they’re so corny. But this one I genuinely felt like I learned a lot and I loved the slow burn of them getting to know each other. Omg when Kelsey said her heart fluttered with the “slip on the rock catch” I couldn’t stop laughing 😂 that was such a cringy scene lol the scene that made my heart flutter was when they laid on the bed and just stared at each other 😅
I laughed so hard at this. Loved it! I agree they probably threw in the SNU thing to make it more of an even playing field and give him more positive features than a good looking face and ability to fix multiple appliances (though personally I think men that are good at repair and have deductive and mechanical skills are pretty sexy). However, I do like that they did not have him return to a corporate lifestyle - he remained true to the philosophy he expressed earlier - even after his previous trauma was healed.
Im from western Europe and you can just be together with the person you love. It doesn't matter how rich or poor, orphan or not. Different lifestyles could be problematic during the relationship. Obviously 😂
Yes, exactly! It's considered very snobbish to judge people by education/money, let alone if a person is an orphan. It's completely different to Korea. I'm shocked.
I feel like the boomer generation does still care about education/work though (at least in Germany). My bf's a lawyer and also from a fairly wealthy family while i am just a normal office worker and they do judge me on that, though they obviously don't say it as directly as people talk about it in the drama. Whenever someone dates someone new, people do ask what that person does for living and to an extend will also judge the person on that.

Regarding 5:39, crossing social class borders in marriage is not especially trendy in developed European countries either. Highbrow snobbish attitude is not paraded here in any way of course, parents' opinions are rarely asked at all, neither is the origin/family itself so critical; it is just that people of similar education, income, and lifestyle flock together and often live in the same residential bubbles. Fellow college students, co-workers, hobby mates are most likely to date one another and to form long-term equal partnerships, that's a natural thing to do. Folks do mix quite a bit on social media, online games, Tinder, and in bars, and there are also high school sweethearts... so, exceptions do exist and, most importantly, nobody judges when they put a ring on it or opt to live together unmarried for decades.
I would agree with this, at least for a lot of the USA (there are always regional differences of course). My husband and I met in university, an expensive one where we were from, but I was the poor girl from a divorced home with MIA parents, and there were no issues at all with us getting married. My in-laws even paid for our entire wedding as my family wasn't able to contribute. My bf, who was financially upper class, married a man with a high amount of credit card debt, which she did regret the first few years but they are still together and happy. The societal pressures in cultures with these kinds of expectations must be so intense :( I hope you are all able to find love in the end :)
In Switzerland, I have the feeling, it's more about a similar educational background than family wealth or status when you date. So, i met my now husband (who is not from Europe ) when he was still in university and dirt poor. When things got serious, my parents had no problem with it, since he was a talented and eager university student. But we also don't have these weird rules about who has to pay for the house etc 😄 we just share stuff more equally I guess...
One year when I was staying for over a month at this hostel in Busan a group of young Korean women would meet to talk about issues...and that week they talked about the hidden camera issue. Afterwards, the main young manager there angrily expressed how women shouldn't complain because they get such an advantage with not going to the military. I argued that if it was such a disadvantage, why within a few years after the military would men still make more money, advance in their companies more quickly and women would miss even more career opportunities if they had children. The guys in their twenties don't see the big picture because they are still hurting from the forced military scenario. I feel for both the young women and men in S. Korea. I am an American grandma that sees the flaws and challenges of the South Koreans, and hold you all dear to my heart . Why? I'm not sure exactly, but think partly because as a people both now and historically you have worked so hard to overcome the many challenges. In my opinion, you went from a fuedal society to a democratic one in just a few years...and in desperation for economic growth, social growth didn't or couldn't catch up. Continue to observe, point out, and fix the flaws you see, but do it with love, Korea/Koreans deserve that. I enjoy your blogs very much!!
Agree with this sentiment. Korea went from one extreme to the other with no time to evolve past the shackles of Confussism. Parts of their society is still firmly stuck in the Josean period. A lot of my Korean friends still refer to Korea as Hell Josean.
Omg...I too have the same thought...since their growth to a developed country was too fast...they didn't get enough time to get over certain social conditioning...Me from India...I think slow and steady wins the race...

Seriously? Hugging? Hugging means there's something?? I'm completely surprised by this, I mean, I hug every one of my friends, male or female, and it just means that: friends. It's very normal here in Spain to hug people, even people you just met. Also, I'm a hugger, so having every hug misinterpreted as showing romantic interest ... OMG, it would a nightmare!! LOL

i feel that scene with the orphan part... i remember into my 1st yr dating with my bf, my father passed away and his parents demeanor did a whole 360, though they acted in concern for my loss. We dated for 5yrs and he ghosted me on the wedding day, no contact nothing. after having a complete mental breakdown, months after I faced him and asked why would you do something like that, like the wedding could have been cancelled before if you felt cold feet but you said nothing and embarrassed me infront of everyone...and he said was that his mother didn't want us to get married (atm I left my job and was my father sole caretaker and will still finishing medical lab school, he graduated as a psych nurse 2yrs after my dad passed with my assistance which his parents aren't aware of...smh) I found out it was because they didnt like the fact I have no father to walk me down the aisle....... Screw them and I graduated medical lab school 2yrs after his ghosting and I am leaving the best life whereas I heard he still lives home, heard he got married eventually and both are suffering under his parents....... Thank you Monopoly get of jail free card!

Korean dating world is so wild to me! Wow. The only question my mother asks me when I date is: "Are you safe?". But also, as a person with friends that are waaaay richer than me: its tiring and I cant imagine dating someone from that world. Not never, but money difference is also a massive thing, as money is in more things than we sometimes realise.
9:17 idk why but the story is funnier considering the insane import costs Korea has for wines or how bottom shelf wines in Europe are seen as luxury in Asia since they are really new to wine culture since it’s foreign to them
"What if the starkar went in Harvard?!" lost me hahaha I understand that parents want the best for their children. They want their children to have their own family with a good partner but what says that a doctor, lawyer or another highly educated person hasn't shitty personality, will this be ignored because they have attended a more prestigious school? And if a person has had a tough upbringing such as their parents passing away, doesn't make them a stronger person later in life?! I really find the cultural differences very interesting. I grew up in Sweden but I come from southern Europe and even there we have differences. I have watched couple Kdramas and have wondered how much is exaggerated and how much is true. You three should keep making videos together because you come up with really interesting things. I really enjoy it :)
This is interesting! I'd have a completely opposite reaction to all of these situations. Coming from Finland, we don't really have big social differences and the school you go to doesn't matter at all (they're all free anyway and about the same considering quality). The only bit I kinda agreed with was that a lot of guys don't want to date you if you're more educated or make more money than them.
As a fellow Finn, I mostly agree. We DO have some social differences, like everywhere in world, we have poor people and families as well as some who are higher on financial ladder, and it might show up sometimes, even in dating, but then it’s just more about attitudes and expectations how you grew up and different needs you have, so like Danny pointed out, if you don’t have too much hard time with relating or can over come it, it’s not a problem.
So the whole social status thing with universities is soooo true for me lol. I’ve worked with university students in Korea at my school (live in Hawaii) and in my experience sometimes the students from more prominent university kind of act a bit snobbish even in the states lol. It’s not everyone of course but I noticed that right away for some people I’ve met. I will say though that people I’ve met from more mid-tier universities were definitely more easy to talk to compared to the ones from richer schools. Not sure if cultural factors came into play but this was my experience.
the thing is you cannot make yourself relaxed and easy going cuz when you are rich and kinda aware in the back of your head that ppl always want something from you. It is kinda paranoidal state of mind you cannot help yourself to dwell, even if no one wants anything from you
I just loved HTCC So fkn much and it became one of my favorite thing and i was shocked bcs i usually avoid romance kdramas im more into thrillers but the simplicity and healing component of this show just stole my heart.
I would say my family is financially stable, and since I am the only child, it is assumed that all assets and businesses would be transferred under my name once I get married. However, I don't look at guys' economy social status etc when I date though and vice versa. I don't mind if the guy isn't as financially stable, unless he is dating me with underlying ulterior motives. To me, what matters the most is the integrity of the other person.
Wow. You guys are probably right regarding the cultural aspects of this relationship but... As a girl, she was attracted to him from the beginning. She connected to him because of compatability. Her demons were loneliness, no mom, rebellious against the norm. She was forced out of her practice. Her friends thought he was cute. She felt free with him and so much more. Also their location played a role. In a larger city she may have succumbed to the social pressure. Please watch this again with a fresh eye.
Okay as a huge KSH and SMA and HCCC fan, here are my 2 cents: 1.) the episodes can be split into BEFORE she finds out about SNU and AFTER. In the 'before' eps SMA's character is a snob. She was iritating! 2.) that scene on the beach rocks SHOULD have been created differently, it was so cringe cliche, if only the director had focused on him helping her up WITHOUT the 'slip' and fall back 'catch' it would have made the scene THAT much MORE impactful. That being said, I loved the whole drama. Namsook was the best! KSH fighting💯‼️
This was the funniest thing ever. I especially think Danny was hilarious about the last romantic scene. And this girl finds those romantic moments so cringe! I always fast-forward Actually a lot of these things relate in the US. Especially the university bit--just not quite as overt. Coming from a working class home where my dad was a fisherman, I went to college very late, graduating at 30+ yo. The assumptions of University people about who was smart, who was worthy, etc, were a shock and an eye-opener to me. I'd had no idea people held these wild and untrue prejudices. I went back to dating carpenters :)
This is very common in my wife's culture. Status is a big thing in so many ways. It has been more of a subconscious issue than a conscious one. We live in the US where it really isn't an issue unless you make it one. You can so easily NOT make it an issue here vs other countries. But it still crops up from time to time.

How could you find someone if you have all those norms and social constructs guiding you to a sort of socially acceptable marriage that'll probably feel more like a business relation ? No wonder a lot of people live in a sexless marriage and are not happy... They check all the boxes and "do everything right" except the only thing that actually matter, which is simply to love the other person.
exactly. i feel like the younger generation of Koreans are on the edge of a social revolution in terms of their views on marriage and cultural customs. Young people either feel like they have no economic or housing prospects so they don't want to get married at all, or they worry about what the reality of marriage will be like (serving your inlaws, having to leave your job when you get pregnant, no sex etc.) and they don't want to put up with that. Some stigmas will take longer to overcome, like the fear of being a single parent, or a divorcee. I've always felt that there's too much pressure to get married at a young age in Korea, especially when you've spent most of your life just studying and having a restricted social life.
@@elemeno82002 Also, I’ve noticed younger generations of Koreans like Kelsey are open to date/marry a foreigner which I NEVER thought it could happen without getting judged by other Koreans. I think it’s pretty sad when other citizens or the same in-laws judge you because you’re a foreigner. Apparently not everyone thinks like that though since there’s a lot of interracial couples here on RU-vid.

As someone from new Zealand, a western society, there is definitely classism amongst unis, especially among jobs like lawyers, doctors, health workers, dentist -basically "top class jobs". You do get judged based on uni or social class (race, upbringing). It's stupid
I don't know about whether it really happens in korea or in any other place, but as I watched the drama, I just want to add something that the story is between two persons ,one who thinks having a social status is so important than leading a life where we remain true to oneself. One the other hand, the guy who came from a poor social background gets struck by the atmosphere cities and its culture creates and wants to stay somewhere peaceful maintaining a low profile. Well, in any society these two types of people are present. So, in my opinion anyone can relate to this drama as it doesn't seem unnatural.
Now when it comes to the hugging scene, I wouldn't get this scene the way you guys did. Really liked the idea of the video for this reason! Even though I'm Brazilian, and hugging your opposite-sex friend or being touchy is really common for us, its usually true if we're more of close friends. Which I don't think it was the case in the drama, right? But I wouldn't necessarily see this as weird or as if they obviously like each other. Actually I would expect my friend to hug me back AT LEAST. But agree with the guys that hugging was not the best option here 🤣

The social position thing is even common in Canada. I am only a high school graduate because of issues that happened to me in the past and I went on a date with this guy who told me he thought we wouldn't get along since he assumed I wouldn't be that smart. He proceeded to compliment me by saying I was smarter than him for someone who never went to university. Let's just say, I never saw him again afterwards. That was my choice.
From my experience, as long as my bf's job or education _and_ job prospects were "good" (and he had good manners), my family didn't care much abt his social/family background (tho, they still cared whether or not he was financially responsible in any case). But yeah, usually a good education is tied to coming from an environment of financial stability (similar to how getting a good job can really depend on who you know).
Haven't watched this show yet, but really enjoyed this video. It's sad that social differences are still such a big deal both in Korean and in many other countries. But I believe it has been changing through time and our generation is more open to everything (at least I believe so lol). You guys are amazing 💜💜💜
I'm a little late to reacting to this, but I only saw Hometown Cha Cha Cha a few months ago and your channel just a few days ago. I did think it was very interesting and amusing! Also, your comment about divorced parents was interesting. My parents got divorced when I was 23 and I can somewhat tell that I get a little bit of hesitancy from people dating about it. Even though I was raised right and they only were loveless for the last few years. Just interesting to see your perspective.
I also think dating between social classes depends on your interests. I’m big into camping, backpacking, working with your hands and have a good job as an aerospace engineer. I would be more open to dating someone in a “lower class” because generally there’s more people who enjoy the outdoors and non-city life. Whereas I’ve known many very wealthy people but generally they’re interested in city life and hobbies I’m not interested in.
When she said that 'Hugging' thing I still remember a village frnd of me who had a guy frnd (best frnd not a boyfrnd) who pat n caressed her head with care after helping her in studies , seen by her parents they thought they were lovers nd forcefully married them off even when they were still in clg , LoL shit
I love watching Kelsey's collabs videos with Danny and David! I find them so instructive, and it's also very interesting to have different point of views AND these videos always have me dying of laughter!!
It's really cool to hear the sincere opinions of people in Korea about what they think about their Kdramas, because there is an exaggerated and media view (this happens everywhere too) for those outside the country and therefore don't see the details of the culture , customs, etc. so it's interesting to know their real view of things, good content :)

HCCC is basically romantic fantasy. It also comes with other themes like friendship, family, overcoming past trauma but for the most part it's a fantasy. It's escapism and good at what it does. The topics chosen are interesting. Some more Korean than others. I'm a believer that true love wins out in the end. It conquers all barriers. Until you find it all you will see are the barriers. And there is nothing wrong with a hug, friendly or mutually romantic in nature. If it's not friendly or mutually romantic then there is a problem.

Thank you for the reality-check Kelsey & Men! Awww my 3rd k-drama! (started watching k-drama fin the fall 2023) I love that show so much, I cried when it ended (and I was shocked to be crying!! that's the K-effect for yah!). I owe Hometown cha-cha-cha the start of my "Morning" playlist > such a sunny and sweet soundtrack :) The male lead did not look Asian to me, so that disturbed me during the whole show.
I'm from an Asian country Iraq and my parents are divorce but not on papers but we live separately and in my country they wouldn't really mind if your parents passed but they would really really care if your parents are divorce! They think this person is not marriage able it's so sad that we live in society that really shallow, And also your economic status is really really important in marriage and dating in my country.
I would also say the lady who spread gossip in town was a fantastic character and the actress who portrayed her nailed it. The short scenes of her laying with her daughter being cheerful and optimistic, filled with the love of a parent split with the scene of her laying by herself in the same bed, heartbroken and crushed of spirit was powerful. More than that it extracted intense emotion and made you understand the character. It wasn't a spectacle, no series of unfortunate events or misunderstandings. It was quiet, it was lonely, if you watched it and didn't feel your spirit get crushed then you may not be human. There was great dignity portrayed in the greatest of indignities. Her character was very fascinating. Those scenes made me feel as small and as helpless as the brilliant performance put on by the actress. Great stuff.
4:20 I can relate to this, my parents had a miserable loveless marriage and waited till my younger siblings were ‘older’ to break up. So I grew up thinking it’s normal to be miserable in a relationship. Took years to work out that was not true 😞

In the USA, marrying within social status does not matter at all. I am middle class and in my late 20's and no one is judged by how much money their parents make. All that matters is if their current partner makes a similar amount or if they combined are able to live comfortably, even if one makes much more than the other. My future partner could have grown up homeless and my parents wouldn't care as long as they are a good person now. I imagine social status matters more when you are in the upper class and large amounts of inheritance will be handed down.
I'm glad that you guys reacted to these scenes. I thought they were just the typical over-exaggerated stereotypes. Now, I can appreciate Hong Banjang's "not-so-typical" character of wanting to talk informally and breaking some of the cultural practices.
You 3 and the drama writer have my total respect for speaking out against societal prejudices that needs to change, even though I do understand the reasons behind it
I come from an American middle class family, and my parents divorced when I was in the 3rd grade. I've NEVER in my life saw my parents divorce as something that could hinder my ability to find a partner or get married. I think the difference is that America is so big that the amount of middle class vastly over powers the amount of upper class. I know that sort of ideal exists, but its never effected me. Also a college education is not quite as important or expected. I attended college for 3 semesters and ultimately decided it wasn't something I wanted, so I stopped. Learning a trade is just as acceptable if you're able to support a family with it. And I know I'm being a typical American here saying "well in America", but its all I have to compare this to. I live in the US, it's considered tacky to flaunt social status here. I work in a public library. We have an after school homework program for low income students. For several years, one of our volunteers was this very nice lady named Nancy. I didn't know much about her except that she was a retired librarian. She passed away about a year ago. Come to find out, she was the aunt of the governor of our state. I had no idea that whole time. She never let on she was related to a top level political family (the current governor, and also his father is a former governor of our state). She was the nicest, humblest person.
The hiking scene was so cliche for K dramas & C dramas alike! OMG! But i have to agree with Kelsey on the hug scene, I think she was relieved and needed to be comforted out of fear. She feels safe with him and trusts him or she wouldnt have hugged him
Loved this video! I never had too much contact with Korean culture and I was always wondering what is realistic or not. I’m very surprised with some points but the whole plot makes more sense now. Thanks for this, very entertaining and educational
Dating within your social position exist everywhere, not just in korea. Even in Europe or the US, You don’t see doctors getting married with janitors, or lawyers marrying waitresses. Maybe for a short fling it happens, but rich women want rich men, and rich successful men tend to either marry their equal, or a woman from a rich family. The fact that westerner celebrities date each other, speaks volume, so idk why people act as if it was mostly in Korean’s tradition.
Hello from Europe. Wow, I can't belive that Korean's culture is so...economic calculating. And if someone is orphan is bad enough ,but be judged then also is so weird. In Europe is really not like that. You marry with someone who you love ,no matter about education or your status(rich/poor/middle class). There is no judging about economic stuf. The social position is a thing to all Asian countries. In my language there is a idiom roughly translate to english as "the wind of which layer will meet the cloud of that layer". Which means for 2 ppl to be able to live a long happy married, matching each other personality isn't enough, they have to be on the same or close level in social position, family circumstances, education level and financial. This is totally true, the best example is the Samsung princess Lee Boojin married with a security guard, everything of her is so high but her husband is so low. She did everything for love but he didn't try hard to maintain their relationship. In the end, they divorced, he already got 7,6 millions USD from the divorce but still tried to get 1,1 billions USD by sueing her but fail
I also loved this KDrama but I had the same reaction as Danny did in the stalker scene: stop hugging him! You're making him less effective as a protector! 😂
