Koreans Try To Pronounce Most Difficult English Words Ever! 

I’m going to be honest, I didn’t know how to pronounce “quay.” Never heard that word before so I was shocked at the correct pronunciation

they both pronounced mischievous correctly it’s honestly just preference.

To be fair, in British English it is pronounced “MIS-cha-vus” and in American English it is “miss-CHEE-vee-us”. Similar deal with words like “Al-loo-MIN-ee-um” and “uh-LOOM-ih-num”.

In my 24 years of speaking English, I’ve never come across “quay” 🙃

Tbh they were both right for mischievous I know many people and myself that pronounce it like byungeum tbh I always feel the pronunciation like heejae feels very fancy lol. Also is quay technically even an English word? 😭 I swear I’ve never seen that word in my life

Heejae is very humble, she keeps saying her English is not good yet she speaks and has many of the COnstant sounds down very well.

The Mischievous one was weird. They were technically both right, but if we’re talking about AMERICAN English than he’s right!! The translation voice was British English.

I could listen to Heejae try to say “squirrel” all day 😂 she’s adorable.

It's funny that they added "colloquial" because it and dialect explain why both Heejae and Byungeun were right when pronouncing "Mischievous". Many English words can be pronounced differently depending on the region someone is from. I have heard words like mischievous, crayon, milk, egg, yolk, and even toilet pronounced differently depending on who is speaking. Some of the words they included like Quay and Maneuverability aren't colloquial, so many Americans probably wouldn't use or recognize them. A lot of English pronunciation comes from the way we form our mouths to make the sounds. It's why Heejae was having trouble pronouncing Squirrel because she was trying to roll her r's, which isn't the way a native speaker would try and form the sound. And at the beginning of Squirrel it would be more like the way we form the letter "w". Either way they did a good job considering neither of them is actively learning English.

Lots of English-speakers do pronounce Mischievous like "Mis-Chee-Vee-Ous" so he I'd say they were both right on that one. And I definitely think Byungeum was closer on some of the earlier ones than Heejae but he kept getting hit instead 😂

The word "knight" is always a tricky one for ESL speakers. Keep that in the works if you're planning on doing another one of these. Love your videos!

Heejae actually said colloquial earlier for the word sixth, although in Korean, but then asks what the word is when it comes up lol. Maybe try words like Dough, Rough, Sought, Thought, Sugar ones that are pronounced quite different then their spelling. I think videos like this are good to help learn English, they can relax and have a little fun with it and not have to worry about being embarrassed if they say something wrong to an actual English speaking person. The best way to learn it is by doing it, you can read the words all day long but if you don't speak them you won't learn them. My advice if you want to learn English, especially pronunciation is to go talk with an English speaking person, most will be more than happy to help you out, and can give you tips to help you with your pronunciation. Just don't be embarrassed to make a mistake, it's expected because English isn't your 1st language and people you talk to know this, if they correct you it's not to embarrass or put you down for trying, they are only doing it to help you to say things properly. Just a little tip, try sticking to 1 type of English speaking person, American, British, Australian, etc... are different.

I started laughing so hard when they pronounced "Squirrel" as "scrr". English words are difficult to pronounce because there are so many rules of pronunciation. I love that they were willing to try and Byuengeun used one of techniques in reading by looking for a word that he recognized within the word itself.

I wrote out the pronunciation of these words as close as I could get with Korean characters to help anyone having a hard time ^^ This isn't perfect because some sounds just don't transfer between English and Korean, but these are very close. Sixth - Honestly, there's no way to write it in Korean because there's no sound like "TH." Put the tip of your tongue in between your teeth with just a tiny bit of space between your teeth and tongue, then blow air lightly out of your mouth. That is how you create the "TH" sound. 스잌+th choir - 크와여 colloquially - 카록귀알리 maneuverability - 만우버라빌리타 squirrel - 스크워를 mischievous - 미스치비어스 / 미스츠버스 Both are correct! It depends on the person and the place they're from. I actually say it the way Byungeun does. quay - 키 yolk - 요크 onomatopoeia - 안노마토피아

For any non-native English speaking person, there are multiple ways to say or pronounce a lot of words either due to an accent or dialect. We’ll pretty much know what you’re trying to say, so don’t worry and don’t feel stressed. If we repeat the word or say a different word, we’re just trying to clarify. Don’t feel embarrassed, learning another language is difficult.

We actually use colloquially fairly often. Not all the time, but more than you'd think

Born and raised in Chicago, and have heard it both ways. Either way is correct and no one in America would look at you weird if you pronounced it either way :)

I'm American and I pronounce 'mischievous' the same way Byungeun does here. (: English words have many different pronunciations around the world so they're actually doing a really great job. Don't be afraid of English, even 1st language English speakers don't match their pronunciations and we can understand each other (for the most part). If you don't believe me compare American English with British English, then compare British with Scottish English. They're next to each other on the same continent yet their pronunciations are drastically different lol

"Manoeuverability" was tricky, because it was the Canadian/British spelling. In the States, we spell it: "Maneuverability", without the letter "o". English words are pronounced differently depending on which country you live in.

Honestly, both ways of saying mischievous are acceptable. I personally say it mischievious and that's fine. It's like caramel, some people say CARA-mel and some people say CAR-mel. I pronounce it the latter way, I don't care if there's an A right there, that's not how I say it and that's okay.

Next time i'm driving home and i pass the neighborhood squirrels i'm going to yell "SCURRR!" lol

Colloquially is sooort of a common word. Colloquial is a common word, and the suffix is pretty standard.

Colloquially is very commonly used. Manoeuvrability is also commonly used. Mischievous was correct for both of them. Mis-cha-vus is used in British English. The other pronunciation is used in American English.
