@@VultureCulture Well when I was just a kid my dad who was the keyboard player of a local band took me along to music shops often. I still remember seeing a JX3P and a Poly 61. I now own a JX3P and a DW8000 as well as a JX10. Love them. I also found a D50 in mint condition a couple of years a go for a mere 350 euro. And Newer but also awesome machine is the Waldorf Q. And one of my first racks was a Korg O3RW, the smaller version of the 01. I bought it new and never sold it. It has a few unique sounds you don't find anywhere else. I feel old and new stuff has it's distinct qualities. We should cherish those.

The "Cheesy" part is what people like about all those common used M1 sound like the Piano1, Organ and the Sax sound. But we have come along way since then. Try playing a Yamaha Genos and try different solo Woodwind, brass and strings instruments of their S.art sounds. The quality you get of just "playing" the sounds is stunningly close to the real thing without having to work with like 10 different articulation switching keys in your left hand. And if you have just a fair knowledge of each instruments range and playing style you can get them to sound even better even the idea primarily is to make home players sound more like a "Pro" with close to no effort. Just the standard logic put into these sounds for automaticly selecting a usefull articulation is amazing. And it's only going to improve as they put AI into it in the comming years. It's certainly not perfect and a Professional Orchestral Sampling library is still better but also near to impossible to play "live". Those are definetly ment to be recorded into a daw and then adding different layers of articulations and Expression afterwards. The S.art sounds are also in the Montage and ModX line synths, but the arrangers are more focused on having a full selection of real instruments OOTB,where the Synths is focused on programability.

According to wikipedia it is non-resonant, like a lot of early digital synths.

I always Saw the M1 and T3 as the culmination of the “big sound” synth revolution that the D50 started where you made up with having to have several stacked synth sounds together to create really big sounds. No doubt that the added 2 multi effect processors which was quite good for late 80’s standards was part of the succes’s and yet still having that kinda gritty sound of 12 bit samples.

@@VultureCulture hmm I may be wrong on that then. I just remember getting pretty well into it as I edited most of the instrument samples the M1 had to get them to sound the best possible, cause I used it for sequencing and live play with a Roland RD250 in the bottom and some Roland Arranger table model. I was playing with a Drummer using a D-Drum 2 set, which I would really like to see again on some vintage hardware site. Those D-Drum sets was pretty mind blowing back in the days and there is very little info on the net about them. I know they were heavy used in the US back then in many recording studios. I guess everyone forgot about them after Roland introduced the V-Drums. And the US company that baught the scraps from Clavia (Nord today) Newer developed on them and only sells some very basic beginner E-drum sets beside their acoustic drum sets. So if you know someone that is into retro E-drums would very much like to see some of that 😘There Must be some Drum people that is just as cracy about retro e-drum gear as us keyboardists about Synths 😅

@@mrdali67 According to the original manual and old Korg brochures the internal M1 samples are 16 bit and the VDF has no resonance. However: The Korg T1 / T2ex / T3ex are capable of loading DSM-1 samples, which are 12 bit. So before you can use them, they have to be converted to 16 bit. This is what I found out about how that is done: "There are two sources of samples for the T1: samples from Korg's own DSM1 sampler (but not their earlier DSS1) and from forthcoming T-series sample disks which are loaded from the synth's onboard disk drive, and samples from any other sampler loaded in via MIDI. Because the T1 has to convert from the DSM1's 12-bit resolution to 16-bit resolution, you have to select a special DSM1 loading routine - and then you can go and make the proverbial cup of tea, because loading is a slow process. However, once you have DSM1 samples In memory you can save them to another disk as T1 samples, in which case they'll load a good deal more quickly the next time. After trying out a healthy variety of Korg DSM1 sample library disks I can say that the samples transfer very well to the T1, exhibiting clarity and good dynamic range." all though. most of my keyboards are either entry level, or intermediate, with the acception of the micro korg, the pianos, and my roland keytar.

I don't even know what an X3 is 😂 is it like an M1 on steroids? And they totally should! Roland gets called out for reusing sounds in every product but honestly people don't get tired of some of their greatest hits.

@@VultureCulture The X3 was the next entry in their workstation line. Those sounds were also present on the Trinity, the N5, and the 01/w. The T2 is the M1 on steroids and I only found out about that one last year. Exactly! The MC307 used JV1080 sounds and that's awesome!

In the Pyramind An Evening with Dave Smith Video recap pt 1 27:05 he said ever since 1987 all Yamaha, Korg, and Roland did are basically building M1s. That tells you the place of M1 in the history of synth by the legend himself.

@@dpalaoro Thanks for that. He did put a 'maybe' behind 1987 in the video. I got mine in 1989, so not sure when it was released.

@sibariba It depends on what kind of expectations you have. The basic idea behind it was obviously to create some sort of "all-in-one" bread-and-butter instrument for music composers (with a pretty versatile optional sound library available). Not much knobs and sliders for realtime-editing available on this one. But back in the days - around 1988 - it was quite ok, I guess (especially in terms of value for the price)...unless you could afford an Emulator III or something.

@@sauermusicDE They sold over 250000 units. The M1 was very good in that era. It sounded great, the effects were fantastic and as you say it had a plethora of sounds in all directions. To say it sucked is imo not a correct representation of reality 😀
