Today I decided to fix my Korg Radias. The Alpha dial encoder and the cutoff potentiometer had issues that always prevented me from enjoying the Radias. It took about an hour to dismantle and remove the parts. Now they're replaced it works as good as new.
While I find a lot of the sound on the Radias to be... harsh? I also think it has really extreme modulation depth and is really quite fun for sound design.
No external FX used.

Glad to see you back on the Radias! That's how I first discovered your channel, when i was researching buying mine. I hope you're hunkered down for this storm.

That’s awesome. The Radias is still a really cool synth. Even better when all the encoders and pots work correctly.

Couldn’t you borrow their Radias? It’s a fun synth, but I wouldn’t say it’s a must have by any means.

Hi MIDERA, It really makes me want the Radias, I'll also see it in my setup, maybe one day, who knows.... Wonderful demonstration my friend. :)

I still have mine, and I so wish there was an editor for the Mac that worked. Problem with Korg is they abandon a lot of their software editors all too quickly.

I have the editor for windows although I’m not sure it even works. I don’t use it often other than to back up my tracks.

One of my favorites, I think it gives a Virus a good run for the money. It has good combo effects and the way you can even sample some waves makes the synth very versatile, alsothe vocoder is really good. You can create quick lead sounds but if you give it a bit of time in a session it will throw you back really good Pads. The immediacy of the knobs is another forte, I cleaned the pots of mine recently and it works like new now. Very special Synth in my collection Merry Christmas ❤

I’ve made my favorite pad on the Radias, but the virus is still my favorite synth. The Radias is super digital, but they’re both awesome. I too love the number of pots on it though. Merry Christmas to you too!

Hey, thanks :) I’m using my canon 5D2 and 60D still. Haven’t really swapped them out since about 2013 to 2016 when I got both of them. My lights are just some cheap lights from Amazon. Can’t even remember what they’re called.

sounds great. id like to see more of what this synth can do. its still around $900 used, which isnt very competitive for a 20+ year old va synth from korg that no one talks about when i can get a hydra explorer for $499 or an opsix for $400. it's so hard to compare and contrast and make purchasing decisions for synths like this or the access virus compared to modern synths like the peak, the waldorf m, or even the newer digital korgs (of which, the opsix at least sounds unbelievable and is so mind blowingly deep for sound design) without buying one and playing it in your home for a week or two minimum
@MIDERA
@MIDERA Год назад
Yeah, honestly it’s hard to compete. All I can say is, it’s a really well organized synth, that really goes to extremes. I really don’t quite know if it is the best sounding synth though. I had an OPSIX for a week and truly thought it sounded terrible. The mod sequencer on the Radias is great too. But yeah, I’m not sure if I’d want it today given what else is out there. I do think the Radias has a specific character and was sort of one of the last sighs of VA synths before the analog resurgence, which makes it a little special in my book.

Beautiful do you sell Korg Radias patches?
@MIDERA
@MIDERA 9 месяцев назад
Hey - I haven't sold these patches. Mainly because they're all labeled "INIT" patches and they have so many random parts in them. I don't think they'd really be worth much or the amount of work I'd need to put in would be pretty excessive :/

easily one of my favorite synths of all time.. I once tried to get an organized troll campaign started, where people would email korg customer service, inquiring about the release date for the "Radias 2" which of course doesn't exist (yet). I did send a couple emails from different addresses, but never got a response.
@MIDERA
@MIDERA Год назад
My favorite thing is that they made the module and keyboard separate but you can have it both ways. I don’t think there are any other synths like that. And yeah, it’s a unique sound, although, it’s not my favorite sound. I would rather have my virus ti. But still, it’s a fun synth and I’m glad I fixed it up.

Hey, I wanted to ask about the alpha encoder issue you had. I recently got a Radias and my alpha encoder seems to act up (always with the FiltBal knob) until I've had the synth on for about 10 minutes, then it operates fine. I've never come across a digital synth needing a "warm up" period before. haha Is this the issue you had? Did you need to replace both the alpha encoder and potentiometer knob with the value jumps? Or just the alpha encoder? Thanks!
@MIDERA
@MIDERA 3 месяца назад
You've come to the right place... Ok, so let's see what's really happening: You say your alpha encoder 'seems to act up' WITH the FiltBal knob? You need to separate what's happening, please tell me what is most true: 1) When you spin the alpha wheel, it works as expected (i.e., turning it slow or fast clockwise increases the value of all parameters, counterclockwise it decreases the values). BUT when you move the FiltBal knob and THEN spin the alpha wheel for that given parameter it does NOT work as expected? This is what it SOUNDS like you are saying (although it doesn't make sense). 2) When you turn the FiltBal knob - the values shown on the screen do not work as expected (i.e., you turn the pot clockwise but the values are inconsistent). This is what I believe is what is happening. Let me know. There is NO reason that both need to be replaced, but it depends on what's happening. I've needed to replace both my alpha encoder AND my filter cutoff, but they were both bad no matter what.
@Treenote
@Treenote 3 месяца назад
@@MIDERA Thank you! Sorry, I think I explained it poorly. Based on what you're saying it sounds like the FiltBal knob might be the issue. What's happening is when I am in edit mode it continually jumps back to the FiltBal parameter on the filter page. It does this if I'm adjusting parameters on other pages (with the alpha encoder or the dedicated parameter knobs) or cycling through the edit pages with the buttons. It's like it thinks that knob is being turned when I'm not touching it. As I said though, this behaviour is inconsistent and goes away once I've had the synth on for a bit. Unrelated question. Similar to my EMX, I'm finding the Radias buttons are inconsistent in how responsive they are. They all work but some need more force than others. When you replaced your encoder, did you do anything to service the buttons? Thanks again for your help!
@MIDERA
@MIDERA 3 месяца назад
@@Treenote Sounds like the tact switches on the Radias are going. Radias and EMX buttons work differently. EMX you probably just need some silver paint (conductive paint?) to put on the carbon feet/contacts. Radias would require soldering new tact switches in. I did not do this because it wasn't needed. I replaced a potentiometer and the alpha knob. Sounds like you just need to replace the potentiometer. Not sure what the part is. But that's my guess as to what your problem is. It's acting like it's jittery and moving and signaling to the device that you are moving it, hence going to that page when it moves.
@Treenote
@Treenote 3 месяца назад
@@MIDERA Thanks so much for your insight! Also, good to know about the difference in button construction between the emx and Radias. I’ll take a closer look at the switches when I open it up. The buttons aren’t unusable, just inconsistent in how much force they need. These small gremlins aside. I’m loving the Radias so far! It’s a huge upgrade from the Korg R3 I bought back in 2010. Wish I’d upgraded sooner. Haha

I have a Radias and every time I think about selling it, I give it one last long session and go NOPE. Not gonna sell it. Not sure what you mean by "harsh". I can make it sound "harsh" but also make it smooth as butter. That's what synthesis is all about.

It has a really grating sound to me. Something in the oscillators just buzz annoyingly. Only the P12 has this problem as well, must just have loud mid range sounds. It’s subjective anyway, so don’t worry, my opinion can’t change yours.

Someone near me is selling the radias for $700, including the keyboard. I just ordered a roland gaia 2 for $630. I might have gone for the radias if the guy had gone down to $600.
