Korg SQ-64 Tutorial: Exploring Eurorack Polyphony with the ARP Function

While exploring what the Korg SQ-64 can offer to synth heads who indulge in the Eurorack modular side of synthesis, Mike stumbled on an exciting use for the unusual Arp function that's perfect for use alongside faux-polyphonic modules like the 2hp Modular Pluck and Bell (as featured in this video), Mutable Instruments Rings, Qu-Bit Surface and likely some others.
The ARP divides a single step in the sequence into how ever many notes you assign to that step, and 'strums' through them, meaning that with the SQ-64, modular synthesists can now strum chords without the bother of having to work out complex ratcheting and sequencing patches -- an incredibly useful feature!
Even without the polyphonic modules, this unusual per-step ARP function allows for dynamic trills and polyrhythms. Perhaps ARP isn't the best name for this function since it brings to mind classic 16th note up/down patterns, but regardless, it's super cool!

Thanks for this. Strum is exactly what the ARP is, like the strum on an Arturia Keystep ... sorta ... Between that, and my realization last night that this is, at it's heart, an old-school step sequencer on steroids, that makes it all make sense. An old-school step sequencer wouldn't have an actual arpeggiator -- you'd build the arpeggiation yourself and it /is/ the arpeggiator. Had to get back into my old Moog modular mindset that I hadn't really thought about since about 1982! Definite "ah ha" moment. Cheers!

Change the name from ARP to Strum, and It makes much more sense. Just got one of these on sale, and having fun, learning the ins and outs, of how it works. Lots of features, that require reading the manual, and watching RU-vid, to get familiar with. Thanks for sharing, and best wishes for your continued success.

Lovely patch, and also great demo of the SQ64 capabilities. Seems like this sequencer is somewhat unappreciated. I am looking to add one to my setup, to me it seems more feature rich and a more elegant form factor than the beatstep.

If you don't have a gate trigger or note CV on the following step, and the release time on the ADSR is long enough, it should ring out. But, from what I've seen in other videos, the entire strum will occur within the step -- in other words, the strum won't cross the step boundary.

@@knifedreamer I was struggling with this, too, until the word "strum" was mentioned, and then the lightbulb over my head lit up. Of course there's not an arpeggiator --- the whole thing is really three arpeggiators and a drum sequencer. The difference between this and a "modern" arpeggiator is that we as users have to build the arpeggios ourselves -- just like we would with a modular setup back in the early days (think modular synths of the 1960s - 1980s). The neat thing here is that we can build the arpeggios with any note sequence we want, and each note can have whatever duration we want, and then add to that the ability to "strum" up to 8 notes at any step in the arpeggio, and the possibilities become pretty interesting. And, by entering notes on steps that don't have gates, you can introduce bends or ties or trills on a note in the arp. So, the lack of an actual arpeggiator in the way we usually think of them isn't really bad thing. Korg just chose the wrong word to describe the thing.

You’ve actually worked out how to use the so-called keyboard function on the SQ-64? I’ve had mine nine months and have never managed it. That aside, there’s some useful tips here, which I can lightly adjust for use with the Mosaic Pluck and Plaits (perhaps a third voice?). Thank you!

I thought the function of the arp was really a strum right off. And as artists we shouldnt let words or lables hold us back from using tools even in ways that are unintended.
