Great demo. Some people disagree, but I still think that the Volca Bass fits the "TB-303 clone" category (plus it does much more). I think your video just proved my point. Cheers and congrats on another great video!
I found that the ds1 gave off a lot of hiss as expected from a distortion pedal. I tried the boss sd1 super overdrive pedal and it also sounds nice but with a lot less hiss. The effect isn't as harsh as the ds1 but IMO you dont really need it to sound massively distorted as it just ends up sounding flat. Either way, any overdrive or distortion pedal will sound awesome so do a bit of research and find one that best suits your needs.
You’ll get so much more variety of sound from your synth -> distortion pedal setup, by running a re-amp pedal in between. Almost no distortion pedals handle a line level signal well....they distort, but not the way the pedal intended, so bringing the signal way down affords you the headroom to really dial in the distortion how you want. Then you can run a DI box after, hit a mic pre amp, or just buy a cheap simple boost pedal after to bring the signal back up. Makes a big difference.
I disagree. People have been running synths/drum machines through guitar pedals since either were available simultaneously. MXR Distortion + sounds good how you are running it. Play with the EG on Volca Bass to affect how your filter and resonance responds. Once it hits a guitar pedal, I'd recommend running the signal into a mixer's channel that has a mic pre unless you have a multifx unit you want to run into a stereo channel for whatever.. A DI box is basically adding a mic pre to a channel that doesn't have one like a stereo channel's L/Mono or R (right) to plug in a bass guitar with passive pickups (in that case L/Mono usually makes the "balance" knob a "pan" knob.. A re-amp box is unnecessary. It is for getting passive guitar/basses/etc (guitar pickup output) at more of a line level signal. A distortion pedal can obviously boost the level of output. Unless you dislike how your synth/etc sound is hitting a distortion pedal's input, don't fret about it.
Why have I only just discovered this? I have both those Volcas and I'm always trawling YT but this only just popped up. Thankfully it did cos I love it Great demo. I will now be seeking a distortion pedal. :-D
Hello 👋 this video has inspired me to get the korg volca bass unit thank you 🙏 kindly for sharing this marvellous creation…. Wonders if you. Still got your set up and if you are still droppin bombs 💣. Love it Payyyce.
Hi Are You Coming Out Of The Korg Bass Into The Boss Pedal ? 3.26 Acieeeeeeddddddd ............. What Settings Are You Using Mate For The Patch Sheet !!
Hi Andrew. MONO, with Korg Volca’s for me it’s only Volca Sample that make sense because it has Panorama control for each sample, the rest is usually MONO.
just ordered a berhinger heavy distortion for my volca bass you think it will be ok dennis,i had looked at a dark matter one but cost dictated, the boss sounds really good, btw love your vids best out of the others on you tube cheers
I've got a Boss ME80 with many many effects on it. I will decently have to try this. How did you hook the pedal up to it? Through the sync or headphone out?
J. Simondz I have a Boss ME-70 and was just thinking about doing this. I’m thinking it’s through the headphones, (3.5mm & 1/4 cable) plugged into the pedal, plugged into a mixer. The sync is from the Beats to the Bass I believe. That’s how I would start it anyways.
When I send my Volca Bass thru my DS-1 the clean signal is louder than the distorted. Strange? Or does the low end suck any energy from the signal when distorted?
Rüdiger Gellert It might be the low end as you mentioned and also distortion works as compressor in some way, I’d never noticed that difference to be honest, will check. Thanks for the info.
Go for the Blues Driver - standard BD-2 would be enough, I’m using my Waza BD2 in standard mode anyway. If you want more meat and grit I’d recommend Heavy Metal HM-2 Japan made. MXR - “super bad ass” original silver one - is really good on everything. That’s my favorite and universal ones. DS-1 is not bad but only if you ok with the tamed low end, the BD-2 are bit more versatile. It’s all from synth sound perspective not a guitar of course. I have to make a shootout with all the pedals I have...
I really wanted to love the volca bass sound but I just can't get used to it to me the sounds lack punch and its kind of offset slightly detuned vco's that you can never dail in correctly well that's how i precieve it if that makes sense however I like the keys and i'm curious about the new volca fm that should bring some new possebilleties to the fm sound with it's motion sequence
+bananepoep You're right about lack of punch, that's why I didn't buy Korg Minilogue - it sounds just like Volca Bass to me - vanilla sound, but I will buy it some day for pads and sequences for sure, now I need something punchy for the bass. Still love my Volca Bass :)
+Dennis Mozgovoy the mam mb33 retro packs a lot of punch but it's an tb303 emu and a really good one I think but you'll need a sequencer to control it it's only 139,- Euro very inexpensive
Thinking about punch on the Volca Bass, maybe a low end hardware gate might be the ticket. I know a paragon hip hop producer that used a lower end comp/gate that gave his drums this pop/punch as the gate opened, trying to catch up with the transient. Just an idea, there are a lot of ways to skin a cat, most important is that you are skinning a cat ;)
how do you make stereo sound from mono (ds-1 output mono)? I have a teenage engineering po-14 sub bass synth and boss ds-1. The pedal makes mono sound from stereo. help me
Uniosg, bass is usually run in mono. If you have too much stereo bass in your mix, it will be a nightmare, if you're new to producing, I don't know if you will have the skills to make a wide bass work. So my suggestion is keep your bass mono for now (and for the next 10 years). IF you want to make your bass stereo - there are vst plugins that are specifically designed to stereoize mono signals. There are free to very expensive plugs available. OR you could just add chorus/flanger/phaser/ensemble/reverb after the distortion from the DS-1. That will get your sound stereereo. But again, it will be next to impossible to mix that wide bass sound in with other sounds. It will just sound bad, and there will be nothing you can do about it. So for the third time, just keep that bass mono my friend!
Yup, that's the one, with small PCB capacitor you'll get sound like in that video, with a bigger coin like capacitor will sound like that: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-5nOGjFm5Ks0.html
+sebprovision Volca Bass>DS-1>maybe preamp, I don't remember>Mackie Mix12FX>AD Converter>Adobbe Audition 24/96 WAV - no postprocessing at all - zero. If You still have questions send me a private msg.
Thanks for THE reply man. I saw you reply to someone else about the mixer after I had posted the question. How do I send you a private message on RU-vid?
+Dennis Mozgovoy Ok, we tried ;) :p Back to here. I saw your comments on the mixer on your other video. What are you looking at changing to in a similar size? My setup is very tiny and don't need anything bigger than that little Mackie, a shame about it's build quality though.

Isaac Pezo Volca Bass - BOSS DS-1 - Mixer (some cheap makie mix 12 I believe, settings on the channel was normal gain no eq or fx) - Apogee Rosetta 200 - Adobe Audition ... if that what you meant by chain ;)
@@AdrianBlackfire74 Stereo 3.5 (mini) jack on Volca Bass side to 1/4 TR (guitar) jack on the opposite end. The cable name is: Hosa CMP-105 1/4" TS to 3.5 mm TRS Mono Interconnect Cable, 5 Feet. They changed design, I prefer old ones with printings on the cable and shorter plastic jack piece.
I just bought my first Volca, a Bass. How do you hook up the MXR Distortion to it if I wanted to add that? It doesn't look like it's plugged into the Volca...? I'm new at this lol
This might sound stupid but can you plug the Bass output into Distortion and then back to the Bass input? What I mean is can the Volca internal speaker power the Distortion?
the problem with the volca is the low end in the filter, those clicks are awful, just not as smooth as other analog bass synths, but it's cheap for a reason
