@@Emil_Popa I connected the Launchpad to Ableton via USB, and the Volca to the Launchpad via MIDI, then opened Dexed and in the PARM menu changed DX7 in and out to the Launchpad's channels, then I'm able to right click on patches and send them. I also tried it with a Keystep and it didn't work, so maybe there's something special about the Launchpad that I'm not aware of that allows it to work
HI. I am quite confused about the midi in and out. Do I need an external audio interface, something like a Focusrite? and what specific cables do i need? thanks in advance. my Volca fm is arriving in 3 days
Great video. Does anyone else notice that the patches loaded into the Volca sound very different than how they play in Dexed? Using the iConnect Midi so maybe it's an issue with the crappy interface and not all of the data being transferred in the Sysex. I know they are being transmitted, just not well.
I was noticing this and I found that not all the operators on the Volca are on after transferring the patch. Hit the EDIT button and then cycle through all the operators using the octave up/down buttons and make sure the display says On_01 for each operator. Use the velocity slider to turn any operators on that were off. You can keep playing the keyboard while editing so it's easy to tell that turning on the missing operators is making a difference. This definitely explains the muffled sound coming out of the Volca compared with how the patches sound on Dexed. The video should make note of this.
Hi there , last night did transferred few patches from Dexed to my new Volca FM and worked well . As you mention here ... it doesn't sound always the same way as the origin sound from Dexed :- / using the algorithms knobs brings sometimes to different sounding ...
A bit of misleading info here. Dexed can run stadalone without any DAW. Also the dexed parameters do not control the FM in real time, its only good for expanding sysex banks and sending single patches to the FM
Not really, the standalone version looks like a recent addition I only found about it a couple of weeks ago when I was looking to see if there was an update.
Maybe i didn't noticed in the video, but when transferring sysx thru midi, from daw to fm, to set the midi settings in your daw off, else dexed will give an midi port error. B-)
Thanks for the heads up! In Ableton I had to temporarily set my out going midi ports of the focusrite to off on the midi setup page. After the patch was transferred to the volca fm, it's the other way round: disable midi in dexed and switch it back on in Ableton.
good sir, i hope you still get this notif even tho your comment was 5 years ago. do i need a midi cable to usb to transfer patches from my FL to the Volca?
@@prsmo (wow recieved a popup mail from 5 years ago :-)) Hi Julian, how are you? depends a bit on what u are using? simplest solution would be usb-to-midi converter. there are plenty of brands that supply them. I am using the midiSport 4x4 from M-Audio, if i connected the Volca to Port-A(hardwired with midi-cable) i then déselect this port-A in my Daw and select this port in Dexed. and write it. Its been a while that i did it though, didnt used the volca much anymore becouse i still need an adapter for it, its the same as the Ms20 mini that i use allot more :-) so good luck with it ,, greets
@@nerdwithacid4832 thank you so much, nerd with acid. i think i should change my name to julian with shrooms lmaoo anyway i did figure out already. my interface doesnt have midi out so i just need to buy a midi in to usb. still thanks for having time to help out. really appreciate it!
DO you have top have a midi keyboard that has a midi cable on it ? because i am using the nektar impact gx49 so how would that work with the volca fm hook up?
Nice video but one error. You didnt used the lately or solid bass. Its a other sound. Hear the fresh prince soundtrack and you know what the bass sound is ;)
Do you feel like you're gaining anything sonically by using the volca FM over the sound generation Dexed provides? Dexed sounds pretty convincing to my ears. Thanks and great tutorial
Yes/No. Volca does sound clean (in a good way). But the Modulator/Carrier with Attack/Decay buttons are a joy to play with and the sequencer/arp is a winner. Ironically, Korg now surpassed Yamaha for the DX7. Volca FM + Dexed are great companions.
ok so this could be a solution to the volcaFM having no midi out.. I presume the patches can be saved on the computer itself for load into dexed therefore loading into VolcaFM at any time? The lack of midi out to transfer patches from the Volca is extremely annoying TBH!
Hi there, thanks for the video. What's the name of the preset? English is not my first language and I can't fully understand what you're saying. Thank you :)
hi i have a problem. I connect my volca via midi with my midi interface (midiplus midi 2x2) and then i try to send pach but after i send it nothing happens. like my program doesnt change. no name changes or no sound changes. like nothing happens. i have a signal because when i click send then that light on interface lights up signaling the signal. i can also play on my volca conected that way on midi controler. Do you have idea what happened? i tried in ableton live 9 and also without any daw. Plz help guys!!!!
Failing to get this to downlosd patches although everything appears to be set correctly. The Volca FM is receiving midi information from Dexed because it sounds the notes that I play in Dexed but it will not receive any patches, Dexed or genuine DX7 ones. There is an option to send to DX7 but when I try to send the patch, nothing happens . No change of name or sound on the Volca. Any suggestions ?
Same. And I’ve tried 2 different midi cables but no way. I’m trying to understand if maybe sysex messages are not sent through my midi port but would be odd as all the other common midi messages are going fine (notes, velocity and so on)
I can't get any of this to work with Maschine. I was successful one time but that's it. I've even purchased a usb to midi cable and that didn't work either. I also tried the retrokits website with no luck with and without the usb to midi or my Kontrol s49 keyboard. I even tried directly from the keyboard midi out port to the volga fm with no luck. My tempo light is constantly flashing, however in the video yours is not. Could that be the reason.
having a horrible time trying to do this in FL Studio.... I make sure my channels are lined up, midi cable works (tested tempo sync) but when I go to send, the volca doesnt do anything.....anybody else?
Thank you for share this :-) It' s a little sad the volca FM can't play all the dexed sounds (?) Some of them are at very low volume, what a pity.. Nice vid anyway !
Open the edit menu on the Volca and make sure all the operators are switched on. It's quite common for them to be switched off after sending over the patch
@@krytenfivetwothreep2485 Even better, go to the Global options (power down, Function + Power on) choose opton 10 on the keyboard and hit 'Record' to save. Then all sounds transferred should sound fine in future. This only works with the unnofficial firmware 1.08 and 1.09
I'm also running DP and I get an option to send program as described in the video, but it hasn't transferred. But then, I can't seem to send a program using Ableton either so maybe it's something else.
I'm just starting to test these tools but if it seems the way to do that is to find the SYX files, download them, and use Dexed to upload them to the Volca FM. I will start my testing here: dx7 patches "volca FM" download
Oh, I just ran across this video from the incomparable Jakob Haq on the topic. Have not gone to these sites (yet) but Jakob provides reliable if not invaluable information: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-orUCD9cLjmU.html
Cheers mate, I've been having trouble to get to sound some patches as you said yourself there were some issues. I couldn't understand quite well what was the solution because it wasn't so clear, like you just change from one shot to the next and I couldn't get what you were doing in order to solve this issue. Thank you for the video, was very useful! Greeting from Paraguay
yeah, same for me on a mac with Ableton. Nothing happens when you right click (technically on a mac trackpad its ctrl+click). Anyone know how to sort this?
I agree with the desire to replace a full cartridge. That would be a nice feature. As for exporting from the FM to anywhere else (backup, into Dexed, etc), it doesn't appear that the Volca FM is set up to do that. Consider that we pipe the syx info in via the 5-pin MIDI cable--which ONLY supports input. The Sync out port can be used to send out audio and create a WAV file that contains the info; some forum chatter on this topic says the WAV approach works but can be problematic (noise/glitches and re-importing is volume level sensitive). So AFAICT, there really isn't a good way to backup the patches on our Volca FMs. Bummer that.
Toggling LFO didn't work for me either, and sounds were vastly different. What I did was to go through each parameter on the Volca FM to see if all params copied over. The issue I found was that not all operators would come across as "on" (01). When I went through all the operators and toggled them from 00 to 01 I got the sounds almost identical. This was the issue with the patch he is using in the video. The operators were off so no sound. Once I turned on the operators on the Volca I got sound.

if... one already has dexed vst playable and sounding nice..with Velocity working, via the computer way....why would the fm volca be needed ??? any ideas ??
Might as well ask Why get a Volca FM if you have a DAW. My reasons: Live performance without needing a computer (or want the laptop to be doing other things); different control interface than the VST; using the Volca sequencer. I'm sure there are other reasons.
