An epic, detailed and accurate test drive of those DX7 emulation apps, VSTs and hardware in 1 video is here!! You will see side-by-side comparison of 6 'DX7 Wanna Be's', compared against Yamaha DX7 MK1 from 1983.
"To Be DX7 or Not To Be DX7, That Is The Question."
Like understanding true capability and performance of super cars from Ferrari, Porsche and Honda by taking them to a race track and pushing them to their limit, you need to do the same to the DX7 and DX7 Wanna Be's to truely understand their capabilities.
For this epic test drive, I selected a few Power DX7 signature patches that are designed to push FM synthesis further and further. Thus, you will conclusively see how each DX7 Wanna Be is capable of emulating the original DX7 MK1 from over 30 years ago!!!!!
With more than 30 years gaps with some of the DX7 Wanna Be's, has the original DX7 MK1 finally met its match? Are those modern DX7 emulators far better than more than 30 years old DX7 MK1?
We test drive 6 DX7 apps, VSTs and hardware in total.
FM Player - This is a very unique iOS app as it is not a FM synth, but it's DX7 sample player.

KQ Dixie - This is an iOS app that is design to emulate the DX7 MK1 faithfully with additional features, like a filter and effect.
Dexed - This is a free DX7 emulation VST for your Mac and Windows. I have used a new version for this test drive.
Native Instrument FM8 - This is a powerful FM synth VST that can import DX7 patches. It is far more feature rich than Dexed and its a unique FM synth in on its own. For this test drive, my focus is for its DX7 patch compatibility.
Arturia DX7 - V: This is a new VST that claims to have faithfully emulated the DX7 MK1 with added features.
Korg Volca FM - A hardware FM synth that is DX7 compatible. It has built-in sequencer and an effect as well. So, over 30 years in technological advances, can it perfectly emulate the original DX7 MK1 with a wide range of DX7 patches?

Nice comparison! Valuable, to see the emulations tested directly against each other and hardware rather than against someone's memory of having a DX7 30 years ago. Do you have any thoughts on the PX7 from Reason Studios?

Oh man, you are such a hero! Have you had any chance to check out SY77/99, Montage, PreenFM2, digitone or reface DX hardware? Is Robert Henke on your list of legendary people to meet? How is it possible Yamaha has not hired you yet!

Would love to hear how these patches sound on image line's sytrus. That's my main FM synth at the moment but these videos are increasingly convincing me to get some hardware.

Have you set dexed to vintage mode ? imho it's the best dx7 emu for the price ( free) , arturia is a bit better but it's too bulky and cpu intensive The artefact that appear at 12:24 in the fm8 is clearly because feedback is set too high , are the velocity values set to dx compatibility mode ( 100 max velo ) ? Just asking because a lot of these comparison videos are done by people who are setting up the emualtions incorrectly ( cough wooody piano shack ..couggh )

Thanks for your suggestion. If I were to get an 4 operator FM synth, then it would be TX81z, as it's a module and I"m familiar with FM4 on iPad, so I can use my learning from FM4.

For my ears, the Arturia DX7 was very good, if you can reduce the artefacts of some sounds that was shown here, it would be even better ;)

Say i load a fm8 patch and to me i feel: "hey this sound lacks harmonics!" So i eq it to taste in the DAW. I wouln't care to the closeness of the timbre to the original on dx7 "mk1".

All those software DX7 tries were based on DX7, not on DX7 MK1.

Would be interesting to compare the Yamaha Reface DX in the same way...I'm assuming that it wasn't yet released when you did this comparison. It is only 4 operators, but does 'claim' most of the original DX patches.

Thank you for your work on this! It's proof imo that the argument that "any software can emulate the DX7 because the DX7 is a digital synth" is too generalized and insufficient of an argument. Which is why I have not invested in Arturia or FM8 because of videos like this where the distinction is embarrassing! And Dexed is just unusable as an aspiring keyboardist who values accurate emulation and expression. What are your thoughts on Plogue's Chipsynth OPS7?! I was watching their videos and it appeared from my impression that the developers took a very tedious approach in emulating the DX7. That's where i'm shifting my focus to as of late. I'd love to hear your thoughts

It's a nice try. But it seems that most of the times differences in sound come not from "better" or "worse" synthesis itself but differently set parameters and specifics of each instrument. For instance, you can't expect Volca FM to sound anything like the others if you don't upgrade its firmware to enable key velocity.

Can't be compared. Completely different specs. The content provider here would have to pull out a DX21 or DX100 to provide you a more accurate comparison

Buying a used DX7 costs about 500 USD, saves CPU and delivers you joy wile playing/using it. Nice to see how ridiculous all the attempts are even in the pure DIGITAL domain! Interesting to see Arturia performing best here. On analog hardware simulations, they always fail big times.

By the way, the Yamaha's Reface DX (about 300 USD only) thrilled me lately. Yes, it's a toy in some way, it even has built in loudspeakers. But hey, my kids love the speakers, and so do I. Overall, it outperforms FM8, Arturia DX7, even Dexed, though it has only 4 operators. Because it is more direct, more original (most you can get today, probably), and more FUN. Add to that a zero-noise output (which my DX7 has definitely not by any means) - and you get your no-brainer that you can use for the cost of a few new T-Shirts. Woaw. -> Damn, looks like advertising! No, I'm not affiliated with Yamaha, I just like this machine a very lot.

tx81z are dirt cheap and awesome. I have the TX7 too - software is not comparable to either. There is magic in those old boxes going through wires and a pre.
