It sounds correct to me which probably means it's wrong in Japanese LOL

Yeah, it's technically pronounced "Po-Kay-Mon", but a lot of English speakers say "Po-Key-Mon".

Which is what the accent over the E is for, y'know.

I don't know what English speakers actually think about her accent in this video. To a Japanese person, it sounded like "Pokimon" to me.

She speaks with the i word that has an E sound. It's normal, because here in Brazil some of our words have the letter E with the sound of i and vice versa.

to an english speaker, i think 'pokimon' doesn't sound as wrong as it would to a japanese speaker, since the letter 'e' can also sound like the japanese 'i' sound here, instead of always sounding like 'eh'

It sounds like how an English speaker would say it

It sounds like how the general Western (or at least American) says Pokemon, yeah. Especially when it first got popular in the west, it was almost always "Pokey-mon" when referred to by non-official media

At first, I thought it was going to be something with pitch accents like with Häagen-Dazs, but this is so much better because I can actually tell the difference! Now, in English, this is fine because E makes the “i” sound a lot and ordinarily would in this combination. Indeed, lots of people I know pronounce Pokémon this way who are huge fans of the franchise. Now, the difference is definitely apparent-like I don’t think anyone paying attention would miss it-but it’s also something lots of English-speakers wouldn’t pay much attention to it in this case simply because it’s not technically wrong here. However! The way she goes “PO KÉ MO N” correctly but then goes “Pokimon” saying it fast is hilarious and incredibly apparent.

Tbh I Can't really tell/hear the difference, if everyone else wasn't pointing it out I would miss it everytime.

In English its usually pronounced: "Poh-Key-Mawn". I think Korone pronounces it closer to English than Japanese pronunciation.
@mdalsted
@mdalsted Год назад
No, I heard it pronounced "Po-kay-mon" in the English dub of the anime, at least by Brock.
@zditto
@zditto Год назад
@@mdalsted you're right, but that's because they are using the Japanese pronunciation in the anime. Most of the English speakers I know pronounce it the other way.
@JayceCH.

@Martin D. Nah, everyone here in the west says Pokimans regardless of what the anime says.
@mdalsted

@@JayceCH. Maybe, but I think it should be made clear that that doesn't make it correct.

@@zditto Japanese pronunciation is Poh - Keh - Mon. Brock says Poe-Kay-Mon. Poh is in po--ridge or po---ttery not Toe with a P, that's the one Brock uses.

The correct pronounciation is P-okay-mon, hence the accent on the e for Pokemon. It just happens that Po-key-mon rolls off the tongue better, so that's the one stuck...
@CarbonRollerCaco

The Japanese E is typically between the English short E and long A (eh, ay), but the English long A is already a combination of the English short and long Es (eh-ee), so you have a REALLY tiny gap there if you want to pronounce the name like the Japanese do. Korone has a thick "country bumpkin" accent, so she ends up going almost full "ee".
@roberttallafer2299
@roberttallafer2299 Год назад
Your pronunciation is for people who dont know how to pronounce 'é' and end up saying Pow - kay when it should be Poh(a very short o) - keh(a very short e) - mon
