Deck Description:
Name: Korvold, Goblin King
This is a competitive EDH deck that utilizes Food Chain and Squee, the Immortal to make infinite creature mana. With Korvold on the battlefield you can draw the entire deck and cast creatures in a winning combination. (combos listed below). The majority of the deck contains goblins as the primary win strategy, hence the name "Goblin King". This is done not only to give the deck a unique theme/flavor. It's to make the most efficient use of tutors in the deck to grab any combo piece (not just Squee) when needed.
Combo 1: Sling-Gang Lieutenant + Putrid Goblin + Metallic Mimic Name "goblin" when you cast Metallic Mimic, sacrifice Putrid Goblin to Sling-Gang Lieutenant dealing 1 damage to an opponent. Putrid Goblin will return to the battlefield because of its persist ability. The -1 counter will be negated by the +1 counter that Metallic Mimic provides Putrid Goblin. This allows you to sacrifice Putrid Goblin to Sling-Gang over and over again until all your opponents are dead.
Combo 2: Murderous Redcap + Grumgully, the Generous + Skirk Prospector This is basically the same as combo 2 but with different cards. When Murderous Redcap enters the battlefield it will do damage to any target. Sacrifice Redcap to Skirk Prospector. Redcap will come back to the battlefield with it's persist ability and Grumgully will provide the +1 counter needed to negate the -1 counter. Sacrifice Redcap over and over utilizing its "enter the battlefield" ability to win.

Hey, if you are gonna stay on the foodchain plan here are a few suggestions to make it put in max work for you; 1) move to one of ea basic and one of ea snow basic (prob you oughta run more fetches anyway and there are budget duals if those are too $ although it’s a great time to buy them) add tainted pact and prob demonic consultation. You can often find foodchain w consult while exiling squee and it becomes a one card win con (especially if you play the artifact version of squee as well) You can even try plunge into darkness and you already run necro. When those effects exile your squee that’s fantastic. 2) chrome mox. Generally an auto include but goes up in value a bit when you have squee and co, exile squee to the chrome mox right? 3) if you play consult/tainted pact you can also run praetors grasp and use that to nab a Thassa’s Oracle effect for the win 4) if you run necro anyway you prob want to play emergence zone so you don’t have to pass turn after necro, crack e zone and go for it after you draw your 20 cards or whatever. Also E zone is just a good land that has synergy w your commander 5) prob play final fortune. Same idea as ezone, let’s you steal the perfect turn when control players tap out or if someone attempts a win and gets stopped and often final fortune is just a very powerful ritual type effect in Korvold. I could go on but I don’t want you to think I’m berating your deck.. I think it’s super cool. Def though if you wanna play foodchain I would suggest you lean into it so it is more than just “some 5 mana A+B combo” if you can utilize it in the deck and kinda build around it some then it can become at least arguably better than other combos and kinda make it make sense. Great deck great video and Namaste fellow Dragon lover 🖖

@@EverythingEDH1 I’m really happy you took it that way. I played in a $500 budget event and played a version of Korvold that looks a lot like yours (cheaper of course lol) but I def leaned into the goblins and used some of the same combos you are on now. I used doomsday as a one card combo w Korvold to crack the pile. This strategy can def work and is super cool but I wanted to share some of what I learned and I know I’d have never figured a lot of it out myself. If you hadn’t considered it, btw, vexing shusher is also a goblin so it can be grabbed with matron too and is very good in a more midrange list. My current list in paper has gotten away from Korvold as a value engine to grind out wins on turn 4 or 5 and is now a turbo list. Uses dockside sacking and reanimating and killing and regrowing and tries to storm off w dockside or resolve an adnauseum asap. Had a game last week against Blue Farm, TNT, and Kess where they ramped so hard I was able to win on turn 2. I don’t own LED or Wheel but you can use grinding station or just culling the weak/infernal plunge w stitchers supplier to achieve the same end w breach. Play breach; play stitchers supplier (mill 3) play culling the weak (draw a card net 4 mana mill 3) use the cards you mill to replay supplier and culling the weak to draw thru your deck and sculpt your yard into a win. In fact I’ll post my list here and you can take a look at it if you’re interested. It’s mostly a manual non determinists dockside storm deck so it can give you a headache to play but it does have simpler lines too. Happy you weren’t offended www.moxfield.com/decks/HVzEPinyVk-XC2VGsEIr7g Named it Korvold Unchained when it hit the point where, believe it or not, foodchain became too slow for the deck lol.

Just discovered your channel. Also am of the Korvold Court. My list is about 8 cards different from yours and would love to try your suggestions and see how it impacts consistency. I also play persist combo with the reason being that creature counters are in short supply at this end of the format, and targeted removal is at an all time low. My win rate is 7% better since making the change.

It's mainy because of the way I play Korvold. I'll usually only cast Korvold when I have the Food Chain/Squee combo set up. Or, if im set up to draw 3+ with him the turn he comes out. Without him in play both those cards cost too much mana. So I opted for cards like Veil of Summer. Regardless, those are both great suggestions. Thanks! 🤘😊

I am all for trying new things and you doin you. That’s one of the best things about Korvold, there are prob 350 viable, really good, card choices for a cedh Korvold list. I think you should check out the Korvold discord. You’ll eat a little shit prob for some of these card choices but its a pretty chill community. Just one thing I’ll say, if you draw your deck how many combos do you need? You see what I mean? Wouldn’t just one Mayhem Devil make everyone just as dead? Or maybe you could consider dual caster twin flame instead of squee and foodchain? 🤷‍♂️. I lknow I did not want to hear that when I played Korvold foodchain but here’s the thing, squee and fc are an A+B win in your deck right? But they do very little on their own and they require you to use up some slots on cards you would’nt prob play otherwise. What about dual caster mage + twin flame? Twin flame can double your dockside. Or reuse eternal witness. Dual Caster can flash in to copy an adnauseum or it can counter a counter spell and it leaves material behind for Korvold to munch on. But if you put them together, you win 🤷‍♂️. It’s squee + foodchain with cards that have text on their own and don’t take up slots in your list. I know how hard a pill that is. I fought it a long time. Foodchain is a combo that accidentally gets shut down by virtually every hate piece in the game though so if you ever get tired of folding to stax maybe try DCM TF instead and open some space up in the list at the same time. 🤷‍♂️

I appreciate the advice. It's always nice to get feedback. 🙂 Just to make sure I'm coming across correctly. This reply is a lot to read (sorry in advance) but it's coming from a place of friendly debate and respect, not rage. I'd love to hear your rebuttal to this so I can continue to grow as a player and maybe even show you why I made the choices I did. 🙂 All That said, To answer your questions. I'm not worried about eating shit for my deck list choices. It’s part of the risk you take by having a RU-vid channel. So, not only do I expect it, I use it as an opportunity to get better (like now in this convo). Ironically the reason i have so many combo pc’s in the deck is because i feel they work well with Korvold even if they aren't winning me the game. For example. All my sac outlets can trigger Korvold for an easy draw. All my persist creatures act as a snack for Korvold if needed. And as long as I have one of those persist creatures out, casting a +1 counter creature makes either reusable snacks for Korvold or gives me a blocker that will always come back. I also have a redundancy of these combo pc’s to limit risk and allow me to play more aggressively. To elaborate, If i have 2 sac outlet creatures in my hand I can play one and have it do as mentioned above until i can tutor or draw into the other pc’s i need to win. If it gets removed, that's fine. I'll just cast the other one. Now my opponent is down a removal spell but my strategy does not change. I'll never be in a situation where I'm afraid to set up a combo early because it could get removed before it goes off. Using just one 2 card combo to win seems risky. If it doesn't work out how do you plan on winning now? This mentality is also why I like FC and Squee. The effect puts all my pc’s in my hand. I can create a game winning combo 3x. So if somebody counters or removes a pc while im trying to win i'll just move on to the next combo. Chances are my opponents don't have 9 total counters or removal in their hand collectively to stop me. This is where Mayhem Devil got a cut from me. By having cards like Goblin Bombardment, Murderous Redcap and Sling Gang in the deck i get the same effect as Mayhem. And with the majority of those cards being either redundant or Goblins I can use tutors like Signal the Clans, Imperial Recruiter, Goblin Matron to get them more consistently. About Squee and Food Chain. Like my other combo pc’s listed above they can play great roles in the deck even if they aren't going to win right away. Food Chain is an awesome ramp spell. If you have a winning combo in your hand but not enough mana to cast it, use Food Chain. Exile Korvold, mana dorks, duplicate combo pc’s ect.. to get you there. As for Squee, due to his abilities as long as he's not in my deck I have access to him whenever needed. Taking control of him is the only way for me to lose access. Otherwise he is reliable sac fodder for Korvold or any of my tutors that require you to sac a creature to cast. This also makes 1 drop tutors like Gamble and Entomb more efficient because Squee in your graveyard is basically Squee in your hand. TF and DCM can work with some of the cards in my deck like Dockside. But, you need Cards like Dockside to make the other 2 work and twin flame only works on non legendary so that limits my pool of targets. Forcing me to put cards in the deck that I wouldn't otherwise run just to make that strat viable. TF + DCM + Dockside is 3 cards for 7 mana. Where FC and Squee is a 2 card for 6 mana. So not only is it more efficient but more synergistic with all the other cards in my deck. I want to emphasize that I don't think you're wrong. DCM and TF is a great combo and i'm sure there are other efficient ways to win with Korvold. These are just the cards that spoke to me and allow me to stand out. All That said, what do you think? 🙂

@@EverythingEDH1 Hadn’t forgot to reply just been busy. Hard to remember all the points but you made good ones and I’ll address the ones that stand out to me. Your combo cards working well w the deck is a great concept to follow. We call that layering or it’s at least “layering adjacent”. It is great to use combo cards that work well in the deck on their own. What I would challenge though is the power level of the individual cards. Yes, they have synergy with the deck but if you play against high end cedh decks you aren’t going to have as much time to set up synergies and you won’t want to be drawing cards like the 4 mana black goblin thing? Blanking on the name.. because proactive decks are trying to win turn 3 sometimes sooner so, yes, you want the cards to have synergy in your deck but you also want to try to match the overall card quality of your opponents’ decks. So another way to approach this is to say “I’m only going to use very strong cards that also combo and/or have synergy.” To use as win cons. Having redundant effects so you can attempt wins and not be dead in the water if stopped is a good idea and I could see why you might think only playing one A+B win could be risky for the opposite reason but I’ll say two things; 1) many Korvold cedh decks use literally zero dedicated win cons and a lot of cedh decks don’t use any at all. Obviously we have to have ways to win the game but we look for ways to win without taking up deck slots that could be used for more genetically powerful cards. For instance, some Korvold cedh decks just try to finish the game by looping praetors grasp w E wit or casting a finale of dev X = infinite so you can just plays your good cards and then they also happen to win once your deck is going off. Or praetors grasp a Thassa’s Oracle and use our own tainted pact for the win or even just kill with Mayhem devil which serves a useful purpose even when we aren’t going for it. I do use DCM and twin flame because I think the cards are useful in my list anyway; can use TF on dockside or E wit for instance or imperial recruiter. 2) we are able to reuse cards like DXM and twin flame if we get stopped by regrowing w EWit or the one you play w phyrexian mana. Of course the main recursion effect is Breach. Squee and foodchain are not good cards relative to cards in the card pool at large. They aren’t, generally, as good as mana vault for instance. And the DCM twinflane combo doesn’t cost 7 mana. As long as you have any creature in play it’s only 5 mana. You don’t have to play a dockside then copy it you can just cast it on a dork. As for cards kinda being good only w dockside out.. that’s a good point but in my list, for instance, I won’t keep a hand that doesn’t get me to a fast dockside and I actually think TF has plenty of use outside of that but I would also not argue w excluding this A+B combo. Because you actually don’t need it. Once you start going off w the deck you can cobble a win together without it. Or just play M Devil as a hard win. Having blockers and worrying about combat is not a huge thing in cEdh Korvold because games rarely end from combat and the ones that might will give you a chance to play Korvold who is a nasty threat in cEdh. Damn. Out of time. Prob enough here anyway. I see your points and I would only say maybe consider what your roll is gonna be in the meta. If you are proactive and trying to win fast then see if you can win consistently by turn 3 against other powerful decks and if not then you prob won’t be the fast combo deck in cEdh. Good talk Gotta run for now 🖖 namaste homie

Why are you playing terrible win cons. The food chain is fine but why the murderous redcap and persist cards and +1+1 cards. You're drawing your deck you could be playing good cards and much cleaner win cons like chain of smog and Liliana or witherbloom apprentice. Or praetors grasp for someone else's thassas oracle.
