Ethnic Koreans in Central Asia are also known as the Koryo Saram. Their ancestors left Korea for Russia's Far East in search of a better life in the early 20th century. They were later forcibly deported to Central Asia in 1937 during the rule of Joseph Stalin. In the first of a three-part series, CNA meets a Koryo Saram family in Kazakhstan. Today, there are an estimated 500,000 Koryo Saram scattered across several former soviet union states.

The younger generations try to grasp and cling to the past as much as possible, the past that doesn't really belong to them, but to their ancestors from Korea.

Korea was invaded and colonized by Japan at about the same time as Ryukyu Kingdom in late 19th century, about 130 years ago. Many patriotic Korean escape to China and Russia to continue the liberation of their motherland, Kim I Sung was one of them. It was unfortunate these patriotic Korean and descendants were lumped with Japanese spies in the 1920s and transfered to central Asia, quite similar to how the Japanese American were suspicious of being spying for japan and we're sent to concentration camps innerland to Utah desert, during WW2.

I mean I guess being Koryo saram is kinda of like being tionghoa in Indonesia I mean it's quite the same the parrells Chinese indonesians keep some traditions like temples though others have converted to other religions like islam
