The Greek island of Kos, located in the eastern Aegean, is off the coast of Asia Minor. Kos has about 30,000 inhabitants. In addition to tourism, the island is mainly used for agriculture. Vegetables and cereals as well as grapes, almonds, figs, olives and citrus fruits are grown.
Kos was the seat of a medical school in Hellenistic times. Contrary to earlier assumptions, this was not led by Hippocrates of Kos (ca. 460-370 BC), the most famous doctor of antiquity, since there were no medical schools at that time, but doctors were only trained in an apprenticeship system.[

Kos war in hellenistischer Zeit der Sitz einer Ärzteschule. Entgegen früherer Annahmen wurde diese aber nicht von Hippokrates von Kos (ca 460-370 v. Chr.), dem bekanntesten Arzt des Altertums, geleitet, da es zu dessen Zeit noch keine Ärzteschulen gab, sondern Ärzte ausschließlich in einem Lehrlingssystem ausgebildet wurden.[
