WARNING! The community patch and restoration mod are NOT compatible together. The game will crash a lot towards the end. So choose one or the other. The community has way more bug fixes but less content. The restoration mod has more content but less bug fixes and is incompatible with some things. Hope this helps
Thanks for the warning! After reading about what the restoration mod does. I thought: "Wait, that actually works with the community patch!? How will this not clash?", so i was searching if anyone wrote about it in the comments and found yours!
I always appreciate comments like these since course I don't know it all, but thr comments really help with that. Thank you both for posting. I'll pin this in the description too
Great guide Kelp! And thanks for remembering we physical media enjoyers are out there, most guides only take into account Steam and GOG versions when talking about compatibility.
@@Kelphelp there is one more mod that I think is a very good mod it is called brotherhood of shadow Solomon's revenge it adds a lot of hours of extra content
Sorry this is not a guide, but just a list of the best modes. A guide would be showing the mods and how to install them properly. Great video, but it is not a guide.
There's also a mod on Moddb that contains 64 KOTOR1 mods that were saved from FileFront before it got shut down, mods like Call to Aid, Revans Flowing Cape Mod, Clone Trooper & Stormtrooper replacements etc, all sorts, maybe you could do another KOTOR1 vid showing off these mods? :D
I finally decided to play KOTOR for the first time in my life, and this video couldn't have come at a better time. Thank you so much for all the time and effort made into this - It'd sure be a far worse experience playing vanilla KOTOR in my modern PC XD
@@ShoneDaddy Don't worry, it's still magical even after all those years XD I still haven't beaten it yet because i decided to wait for the Remake to come out, but now that the Remake has been postponed indefinitely, it's time to go back to this gem. The writing and atmosphere of this game are phenomenal. I can see now why SW fans hold it in high regard.
@@Kelphelp no you don’t forget your first time especially when defeating Darth malak that was a pain I had to run away from him and heal myself then save the game a bunch of times 😂 but I finally defeated the final boss maybe I was at a lower build or sum 🤷🏽♂️
After you have leveled up once on the endor spire you can leave the main character at level 2 until you reach dantoooine, by doing the main story it will force you to level and pick a class. And there you go you can have all 21 levels as jedi Have fun !
Great guide. This is exactly the kind of thing I was looking for. But I wanted to point out: According the Ultimate Character Overhaul's mod page, UCO should be installed BEFORE the community patch, followed by said patch, and then followed by a compatibility patch provided in UCO's optional files tab. Granted, the mod page also says that skipping a "compatibility patch won't break your game in any way, all they do is improve mod texture quality to be on par with UCO." So at worst, following the install order in the video will give you a few inferior textures.
Where does is say that on the UCO nexus page? There's a part about compatibility patches and how to install them. No mention of the community patch. EDIT: I see it mentioned in the optional files section.
True but that really takes double or triple the production time and I just wanted to get the idea out. If you wanna see comparisons, that's what the port vs ports are for
Something for people to bear in mind is that the community patch and restoration mod conflict with each other, pick the one that’s best for you and go with that.
@@Kelphelp it’s written on the download page for one of them on deadlystream to not use the other with it. Dunno what the exact details are but its there
I wish the steam version could have a workshop for mods like KOTOR 2 they completely forgot about KOTOR 1. But I know there are others sites for modding this game but I’m just lazy to go look for them and installing the mods. I like how easy it’s to add mods in KOTOR 2 in steam just hit subscribe and bam all done.
@@Kelphelp yeah I have kotor 1,2 on my super outdated Windows laptop stills has mods but the pc is just old I think that if I even to play with mods now on that pc it might explode but I’m running these 2 games currently on Max even though is not a gaming computer it handles me very well and with all of this mods. Is guess since my Mac that I currently have is quite faster. I first bought it for music production purposes so it has great processing power and runs smooth I guess the only thing I’m missing is just a real graphics card but don’t know if I can upgrade that on my Mac
I'm always very apprciative of modders... I don't know how modding works, but I always wished they would make a comminity + patch with stable graphics updates/overhauls so you don't have to install 6 different files. I'm sure that would be a pain to manage though
Eh is what it is. At that point you have to consult each author to make that happen and not worth the time or effort for modders to do so. Take what you can get situation
Every time I play Kotor, I only level when when it forces me to. I save all my level ups until AFTER I get the jedi class. It makes Taris that much more challenging and you get more force powers.
You missed a few: There's a mod that replaces the ugly sprite looking crowd in the Arena with much more improved 3D models. Mods that replace the Default versions of Ajunta Pall, Lyn Sekla, and Selven with their supposed Canonical appearances. Mods that also improve the Lightsaber blades, add Revan's Canonical appearance to what he looked like in SWTOR, among many others.
@@Kelphelp I’m still fairly new at installing mods, I’ve figured out nexus mods decently enough. But where does that first download link you provided need to go?
I played kotor with mods. I had a mod where you could summon creatures, characters, sith troopers, ect and fight them. It was pretty cool. I was also darth nihilus.
Great video, and thanks for the advice! Does the character overhaul mod conflict with the individual redesigns for characters like Bastila? I haven't found any warnings about it on the mod pages, but I wonder, since they both seem to be changing the same thing.
Not that I know of, in fact I had separate Bastila face mods myself just to tidy up the model. Should be fine but install them AFTER the graphical mods or you will have issues.
Every time I try to install the community patch it also says that it can't find a file and gives me an error do you or anyone else know a way to fix this
All I know is I tried to extract the download through winrar and had complications, deleted ,redownloaded it , opened it when the download was complete and extracted it then it let me direct it to my steam games through the patch application
Super cool video, thanks for taking the time to make this. One question. I purchased through the EA store, will mods still work. Sorry if this is a dumb question. I am VERY new to the modding world.
yeah just so you know the resolution fix is totally F*****d up I think that the patches required for UNIWS to properly detect your game folder, which you don't list in the info under your video, conflict with UNIWS itself and the directions found in the readme for each conflicts with the other... I've tried two installs now, following the UNIWS directions to the letter, and end up with an extremely messy resolution which does not allow me to progress through the main menu
I’m really thankful for you doing these mod tutorials on both KOTOR games, it can be difficult navigating the plethora of mods available for both games. These videos have been indispensable in helping me to attain the best KOTOR experience possible, it’s much appreciated.
That's extremely kind of you to say and thank you so much man, It really means alot. I always mess with mods and trying to find the best of the best is tough, so I hope these guides are what stand out. I hope to make more in the future for different titles and PC games.
Really appreciate this kind of video! installed every mod except the restoration mod bc everyone said its not compatible but while installing the mods into the override folder there are files with the same name?! Would that be a problem ?
Hey I’ve just done the menus mod and done everything it told me to do and nothing is centred like everything hangs to the right and I’m in 1920x1080 res with the mods required to do that could I get some help?
i think there was a total conversion mod for it that had you play as revan during the mando wars and whatnot looked cool as fuk idk if it was an offical thing just idk
Hmmmm can't say I know how to fix that since it's worked for me immediately. Maybe start from s clean install and install them one at a time. The mods for sure so must be something on your end
They are usually pretty simple. Drag files usually to the override folder of the installation files. If it's not there you can make a file called "override". If you need more specific help head to the support channel of our Discord.
They won't but make sure to install the overhaul redux FIRST then Fens mods. Those will overwrite the others. I personally use fens and is my favorite for character models
Installing mods for KOTOR and TSL is super easy. Most of the time you just dump files into the Override folder located on the main game installation folder or create it if it isn't there, but yeah, reading the readmes is one of those "best practices" in modding.
i swear modding this game is a pain in the ass im just gonna reinstall the game get the character model improvements and play it like that until remake comes out
@@Kelphelp well I think im gonna try modding it one more time without the menu mods cuz I think that's what messed it up but if it still gets messed up again ill just play it without mods and hopefully still have a good time
I recommend for aure going in order, installing each one by one and booting the game to see if it works. If you do that and the Readme should be fine. It's tedious but worth it
@@Kelphelp allright its the KOTOR High Resolution Menus mod that messes up my game i just get a blue box so if i skip this mod i should be able to use the others
Thank you for this!!! It really helped!!! Quick question, though. Do you know of a way to fix the grass in places like Dantooine or the Taris Undercity? I’ve got that glitch where the tree leaves are all black and the characters legs turn invisible in tall grass.
No problem! Usually I would recommend turning the grass off. It really causes alot of issues in base game and I wouldn't recommend it to keep it on. Trust it makes problems much much worse
@@Kelphelp I checked the Read me file and everything looks good I have two theories one that the game is already 1.03 and the other is that it might be because is a steam game
Hey so I'm semi-new to modding and I'm just a little confused with it because i used vortex to install mods for kotor but then when i try to launch it, it says "Application load error 5:0000065434" so im just trying to figure out if maybe i downloaded them wrong or do they not work using vortex? any help would be great if possible :)
Ah so this could be a long one. There is alot to explain so it's much easier on discord but to put it short. I always recommend starting from scratch, loading the mods one at a time and then running thr game. If you get an error it's most likely that mod. It's time consuming but best way to figure it out. It's all troubleshooting. Good luck man
Ah gotcha, hmmmm, ifgif that is the caes you can always install one and not the other. It didn't happen to me but if it happens to others might be worth doing.
I'm wondering if there's any Engine/UI and Graphical Mods that conflict with the KOTOR Restoration Mod as I wanted to play with restored content and then found this video.
Gonna have a tough time with that I'll admit. You won't get a 100% 1:1 experience but try JoyToKey and map controls to an Xbone controller and try your luck. It's not perfect but worth trying
I completed this game a long time ago , can anyone tell me why you would want to play it again , it’s really linear and does not have any replay value for me , prove me wrong , I’m waiting
Story is really great, characters are as well. Just a well rounded game that's lovely to play time and time again. But sounds like you have your heart set on your mentality so guess you are in the minority on that
Thank you for the Video but i miss the guide....ist justa listing in my opinion. For example the resolution patcher. Ic cant give in screen widht an height,i cant press the patch button.^What is with the ini file ? I got the latest version on steam
The .ini file isna document in the root of thr folder. Search for that and add the resolution. It's been a while since I've done this so I don't remember off the top of my head
I know this video is old now and I don't know if anyone will be able to help but after installing all the mods listed I started a new game and now I can't unlock the door in the first room as trask
Great video thanks! Just getting back into KotOR after a long while and getting my mods set up. I did find that Fens Canderous character conflicted with Ultimate Character Overhaul Redux and made him a mess, removing Fens Canderous mod fixed the issue. Does anyone reading this play with all of Fens characters AND UCO redux? And if so are their more conflicts down the line? I did try using Vortex mod manager for kotor but it didnt detect the Canderous conflict and didnt uninstall or disable mods correctly so i reverted to a clean slate and installed manually with good results. I would like Fens mods and uco working together but i dont know if that is possible.
Glad it helped! I sometimes use Fens but not all characters. Some of them do physically deviate from the source which isn't the best IMHO. Personally if I could I also like to avoid mod managers so I can simply transfer the files to different PCs at home so I can okay from multiple sources
@Kelphelp thanks for your reply! Yes I can see that deviation but it isn't a huge deal for me. I tend to prefer a mod manager where possible to keep things tidy and organised, but Vortex did not like this game at all and I had so much trouble I deleted it and installed the mods manually with good results. I did get recommended to install Fens after UCO and overwrite that seems to be okay so far but i am still early on and been away from the game for a while so I may get problems later but I hope not!
Afraid I can't help you there too much. I highly recommend reading the Readme files and installing 1 by 1, and troubleshooting them. That's the best way
Whenever I try to patch the game with UNIS it won't allow me to continue the process once it finds the swkotor directory. The patch and undo patch buttons are faded and I can't do anything to continue
Yea it for sure ain't perfect and there are reports it doesn't work. Hmmmmm UNIS can be finicky, my only recommendation is a reinstall and trying to get it to work and make sure it has the proper paths to be safe
Ok I love all these mods but how TF do i fix the bug where every single time I end combat my character cant move. Tried turning Vsync on and off doesnt work! Cant even get off the endar spire because of this.
@@Kelphelp also another thing when I attempt to install that kotor1 restoration mod it says a It’s missing a dialog file D8 or something like that any advice?
@@Kelphelp the one in the link of your video unless there are any alternatives I could install instead? But I’ve honestly got no clue I’m not that tech savvy
Lord those fuckin fingers got me laughing. Flawless widescreen is a decent backup for sure and can get it running on widescreen. You should be fine for sure man :)
So what I am hearing is I don't want to mod Knights of the Old Republic. Not to demerit the modding community, they've done a wonderful job. Is just that when I mod a game is usually after finishing the game to have more content. I don't care about graphics, resolutions and bug fixes, those are just added flavour for what I'm really looking for after modding which is more of the game. More builds, more weapons and armor, more quests that sort of thing. And Kotor does not seem to have that kind of mods, all mods seem to be aiming to remaster the game to a more modern experience and I just don't care about that. At least is better than the modding community of kingdom come which are almost exclusively trying to make the game easier.
Usually elements like there's aren't necessary for KOTOR because there is much more interest In a remastered approach rather than additional content. Unless it's developed cut content, not many individuals are interested. KOTOR is considered one of the best RPGs ever made, so there isn't anything that needs to be updated other than texture assets
@@Kelphelp i noticed. I started playing recently and have come quite far so I decided to formulate the mod list for when I finish it. There are some mechanic problems I was hoping to fix for the next playthrough with mods however. Persuade doesn't see much use, the amount of repair parts is unbalanced same with comspikes and ranged builds are next to worthless with blasters seeing less damage and accuracy for the same amount of points investment. The writing is good however, very good, the level design is also good although I would have liked for more stealth options though, as it is the game hard rails you into the melee build. There is some narrative justification for that though so I can tolerate it.
I would argue stealth is more of a feature than a main objective use. The game forces some kind of offensive build with different varieties but considering you are a Jedi, there are multiple ways of going through that. It doesn't offer the builds of say earlier elder scroll games but it's more focused on 3 builds.
If I actually showed how to install them the video would be 3x as long, and the Readme guides are pretty self explanatory. Never did say this was a modding instalation guide either
All of them have instructions on the readme file when you extract them. As long as you can find your game's directory it becomes mostly straightforward
Reason people don't drop it is if you have the same save that uses different mods might not load correctly. So better to go private save than modded if that's the case
Yeah I probably should have used them lol but I wanted the most OG experience. Like for Kotor 2 I didnt even run restored content just to get the OG experience. Which I know is a sin but oh well I'll run thru it again sometime
I wouldn't say it is and I 100% get your perspective. I was one of those guys when I finished KOTOR 2 in 2004, I had no idea what the ending was but restored content helped piece it together. I'm the same way so don't worry man 😂
Jedi From the Start makes more lore sense than the actual story. After all, if the Jedi wiped/rebuilt your mind then it would only make sense they'd want you to be on their side and keep an eye on you. Especially since they would probably be concerned about subconscious, ingrained training leading you to use the Force anyway and perhaps being led back to the Dark Side. Better to just handle the training themselves to fit you into the mold they want. Heck, they could even take it a step further and pretend you were one of the Jedi that fought Revan on his flagship, thereby also neatly tying up any questions about memories that might pop up.
Not really though, using a Saber and robes might bring back memories of Revan so keeping them far away as possible makes sense. There's a reason why there was a huge situation when Bastilla brought Revan to Dantooine
To me, the game crashes frequently whenever I try to loot certain chests and other stuff even with the community patch. I have no idea if a certain chest will cause the game to crash or not forcing me to save whenever I am going to loot something. And interestingly, it is always the same ones so it doesn't seem to be random.
some of these mods are confusing asf to install for my two braincells to follow :') i wanted to mod kotor last year and found your vid but i ended up breaking the game bc i'm ong dumb lmao but i'm trying again and at least got a different resolution fix to work but even then i really wish you made a "how to" vid for some of the more complicated ones
I wouldn't mind making a how to but it might be significantly difficult and tske more time. I would definitely recommend installing one mod at a time and checking each one. From there it should be much easier. Patience is key here
Hey So I don't know if anyone can help with this but I'm having issues with the High Resolution Menus mod. I followed the read me to the letter and everything looks great. However my mouse cursor doesn't seem to work a lot of the time. I can use it in the main menu but all setting menus and in game menus the mouse does not work at all.
@@Kelphelp Nah on my 1440p monitor. I changed my mind and am actually going to try running the game in 1600x1200 with a ReShade preset that emulates an old CRT monitor instead of a TV.
I didn't want to explain in the video because it takes way too long to explain and by the time I do this vid is 30 min long. The Readme files do a great job of letting you know how to install em. Check the Readme, install one by one, check the game on boot if it works and you golden!
@@Kelphelp Sorry wasn't trying to be a total jerk lol. Currently trying to figure out how to mod it on Steam Deck/Linux and have been struggling. I'm beginning to realize it may not be possible. Great video! Thanks :)
Naw no problem at all. I do feel like it is possible to do on steam deck. Since it's just a computer running Windows 10, I don't see how it won't run so you should be good! Linux...yea that is another thing. Mods might need to be tailored for it. Thanks for the watch and good luck with the mod
