He was born on September 11, 1922 at Kottarakkara in Kollam district as the son of Narayana Pillai and Umminiamma. Sreedharan Nair's primary education was in Iswara vilasam Higher Secondary School. He started acting at the age of ten. He came to fame with the play "Prasanna" by Munshi Paramupilla. Later he formed his own theater group called Jayashree Kalamandir. Veluthampi Dalava play was staged by this company. Kotarakara Sreedharan Nair acted in many plays.
Sreedharan Nair's entry into cinema was in 1950 when he acted in the play Prasanna which was made into a film of the same name. Then he acted in about two hundred films. He immortalized those characters by acting in the title roles in the films Pazassiraja , Kunjali Maraikar and Veluthampi Dalava . Kottarakkara Sreedharan Nair's most famous role is Chempan Kunj in Ramu Kariyatti 's Chemmini . The last movie he acted in was Mizhineerpoovy , which was released in 1986 .
In 1969, he won the Kerala Government Award for Best Second Actor for the film Koothukutumbam and in 1970, he won the Kerala Government Award for Best Actor for his performance in Aranajika Nera .
Kottarakkara Sreedharan Nair's wife's name is Vijaya Lakshmiamma. They have eight children. Jayashree, Geetha, Laila, Shobha Mohan , Kala, Saikumar , Beena, Shaila. Kottarakkara Sreedharan Nair passed away on 19 October 1986.
