I like how even the senior idols are speaking up about this and things that they themselves had to leave behind and how it felt to them like dropping out of school, not making any friends and not even having enough time over all with the struggle of going to school to the company to going home and repeating it over again until they debut.

But that's the thing, everyone speak up about how difficult it was, and the issues they have now because of debuting young. But the truth is they are very successful, and people, especially young people, focus on that. They are very successful and rich because they started at a very young age. Young people are encouraged to do the same.

Whole heartedly support the 18 year old minimum age suggestion. If we as kpop fans are serious about changing anything, better start sending a message to all agencies through our actions. Whats the point of all the talk about how its uncomfortable for us, if we are going to go watch content fron Babymonster, New Jeans and SM's upcoming gg, buy their merch and albums, and obsess over them? Lets show them our commitment to a minimum age standard by pausing our support of all their activities until the youngest member is around 17/18 years old. If we cant do that, we might as well get off our high horse and stop pretending that this problem isnt actually of our own doing, and we are absolutely complicit in it? For instance, none of us would have any right to call out BamBam over his disturbing comments about NJ Haerin since we are essentially the same as him, just not put through the media spotlight like he was.

If you like to know. I did research on many different current nugu/unpopular/underrated kpop group promoting, disbanded, pre-debut (from 2020 to 2023), and found out that more adults debuted or close to adult members debuted or are pre-debut and less minors. I did find some minors in kpop groups who are extremely young, but besides that there are more adults/close to adults in kpop. The small handful of minors debuting in the industry recently, cannot speak for the whole industry, when countless adults have are debuting, but people only focus a lot on minors, since the big influential companies are debuting them. It's sad.

@@jasoninthea.m7471 thanks for the research insight, but i disagree with the use of the overall industry statistics on a whole basis, because it doesnt account for the grossly oversized influence that the Big 4 have on the kpop consumption experience. Im fairly confident that for a majority of kpop listeners, the Big 4 is likely to provide an overwhelmingly large proportion of kpop content they consume, so while the presence of dangerously young minors may be minor on a whole perspective, it still provides a public moral hazard for consumers who need to grapple with commercial sources of influences seeking to sexualise or exploit these minors for financial gain. Also, how little is too little to act? I dont doubt your statistics, but its quite likely that this problem has gotten worse as a whole when compared to previous generations, regardless of whether its still small relative to the entire population. A problem does not have to be statistically significant before it should be acted upon, as long as its overall impacts are of any significance, it is already a qualified candidate for further preventive action.

@@marianne9221 Yes true. I don't agree with the fact that companies should debut minors. Because it is harmful. But I've been very sad at kpop stans who think it is normalized. I just meant I think one of the reasons they are so close is because they went through this experience of having to work so hard at such a young age and basically being forced to cut off any contacts besides their company together. @@paulamusik2509 I understand what you are saying. But tbh when you are a child you can only keep the amount of company you are forced into. Imagine if your parents sent you to a different school you wouldn't have the same friends right? Imagine if you were born in an entirely different country you wouldn't know the people you do right now? Kpop training is like that. They went there to train first and foremost and tbh seeing how SM has amazing idols it's only fair to assume that their training was definitely heavily prioritized over maintaining friendships. You can see this happening in survival shows. No one likes to make friends with someone who would only put them down or distract them. You can also see this happening in schools, where you are encouraged to befriend people who would help you in improving your test score. Anything other than that is simply a distraction. I do understand Jaemin's point too. Sometimes he would wish to just fool around with no cameras on him. Tho I do wonder why he doesn't reach out to idols outside of his team. I have heard many idols from different groups forming friendships based on their ages. They even go out to eat together in private. Nothing is exposed too much from their interactions.

I usually don't comment online, however, it's really creepy to me how literal MINORS have to be caring about their weight and how their agencies make a lot of kpop idols STARVE just to wear shorts, mini skirts or cropped tops and how they are judged on their looks. Like, we are talking about an industry that debuts girls and boys between 13-19 (ages where the body and brain are underdeveloped and need vast nutrients to keep developing), force them into crazy diets to make them look like adults (Like ITZY's Yuna, for example). The sexualiz@tion of minors is really disgusting to me, and sometimes I feel really bad for liking kpop. Sometimes I ask myself if it's okay to like and support such depraved industry. Because please, WHY DO A SOCIETY CARES SO MUCH HOW A MINOR LOOKS???!!! Are we out of our minds? We can call it cultural standards or whatever, but... for me this is child @bu$3 and maybe a little bit more. I catch up on songs and some news but after what happened to sulli who went through this as a child and then judged so bad as a adult or how fans treated jonghyun just for dating and trying to have some sense of normality and what happened to them I stopped supporting kpop. Also after finding out about sponsors in kpop. Heck no. Any of the money I spend on faves will then go to the company doing these horrid acts. The average training period is 2-4 years, but it can even take longer than that, especially at YG where it's 5-7 years. Making 18 as the minimum age for training means there'd be even less people who get to achieve their dreams. Jihyo from Twice almost didn't debut, and she trained for 10 years. And the younger you started that life, the less time you had before it, to learn about 'the real world'. So, leaving an Idol life is like being released from prison. You go from a highly institutionalised, organised, structured life, to the freedom of what we all know as 'normality'. And, as I'm sure we know, lots of people in that situation really don't cope well. And the longer you were in that highly controlled environment, the harder it is to cope outside of it. That said, I am pleased that it is at least started to be OK for senior Idols to speak about the mental health pressures associated with this sort of life. (It certainly used to be a taboo topic!) And very pleasing that some companies are even starting to include some form of counselling/mental health education service as part of their structure.

I think this is an important issue to discuss. People are ignoring the ethical issues and responsibilities associated with such groups, BabyMonster because they're under YG and BlackPink mentors them, NewJeans because they're one of the most trending girl groups right now. The minimum age for debuting should be 16 if they're pushing it. I like NewJeans, their aesthetic, and they're talented, just Hyein, Haerin, and Danielle are still under 18, and Hyein is like 14, that really just ugh. "Cookie" is a good and catchy song, it was just pitched at the wrong time, minors shouldn't have been singing a song that's clearly an allegory for virginity and genitals. The BamBam situation is an example of how once people debut as idols, other people seem to lose the perception that these people are people. Danielle literally got a lot of flack for saying Chinese New Years instead of Lunar... it's ridiculous. BabyMonster as a whole is kind of disgusting, all but maybe 1-2 of the members are above 18, and the name... it really capitalizes off of the fact they are minors. However, people don't seem to care about how kind of messed up it is because "omg Lisa's teaching them" "BLACKPINKS little sisters". Success doesn't really negate damage. Chiquita is both really young, and she's foreign. Korea is infamously brutual to some foreign idols. Lisa while being a Blackpink member is the least popular domestically in Korea. Tzuyu literally had to give a whole ass apology for raising the Taiwanese flag. Now imagine all of that going towards a 14 year old. The idol training alone is grueling. CUBE emotionally guilts their talents into dieting, giving them freedom to eat what they want, but like taking before and after pictures. Then you have to consider, when are they going to be educated. They might have selfie classes, and PR classes, but what about social studies. Chaeyoung's situation really made me rethink about idols and what education they're getting. Their mental health could be seriously effected too. So many idols receive so much backlash and criticism. Even big names like HyunA and Jisoo aren't exempt. I just think of idols like Sulli, that is the reality of being an idol, that can happen even if it seems like you're happy on the outside.

And if Kpop companies do keep debuting idols in there early teens not only they are taking away there teen years they will also not be able to do teen things like meeting up with friends falling in love going out going to high school college and making new friends extra being in your teens is a precious thing and it should not be taken away from you. in my opinion the perfect age to debut an idol would be 21,22 to 23 years old and I personally don’t like the idea of teens debut reason they won’t get to do teenage things all they have do is leave school and go straight to the company that’s not a good way to spend your teenage years is it. I honestly love the realness and how open some idols are when it comes to their careers and how early they have started and the regretful feeling afterwards. The kpop industry is a tough industry at hand and especially for young teenagers as they are growing and working hard at this level is very challenging and I am surprised many are doing well in terms of health.

Check out Emma from the voice kids, she even rap Mockingbird of Eminem. How come, no one is saying that she is too young to be in the show, and rapping? What is wrong is, some people look at the age not the talent. I'd rather see young children doing what they love to do and chasing their dreams, than lounging around and just do online games the whole day.

This reminds me of an interview I watched a while back about Western pop groups that were super popular in the late 90s/early 2000s and how the trappings of fame messed them up and left a lot of them absolutely clueless about how to do the most basic of everyday tasks once their fame ended because they'd had management and staff overseeing the mundane aspects of their daily lives during a time when they would've been learning to be independent had they been non-famous. The pop groups in question were all roughly 16-19 on debut to early/mid-20s at disbandment, so I can only imagine how much worse it must be for idols that have done nothing but train since their pre-teens (sometimes younger) and then debuted while still underage, it's gotta be really tough living out your formative years in the public eye with constant scrutiny, it's no wonder a lot of child stars go off the rails in their later years and no surprise that there's been a rise in idols choosing to end their own lives.

I have huge respect for idols how they are speaking about this , cause it’s weird to say that even before idols debuted young , it is true but doesn’t mean it’s right , cause we all know it’s difficult at this age children’s don’t diet but as a kpop idol you gotta diet , they can’t play and be carefree this age is very special they are missing a lot , but also it’s their choice , i just hope they don’t face anything wrong and they stay healthy

18 yrs to 21 yrs should be the age to debut. By this, they won't miss their childhood and would be mentally more stronger. Suicidal, depression death cases would decrease in k-pop industry. There is no rush. Enjoy the life which you have only once. Don't miss any of the experiences which could make you feel sorry or sad later, cus you wanna regret it so so much once you put your leg into the sh*t. Believe me, it's really a shit. There is no age limit to get famous, to achieve big or to make your dreams come true! I hope fans think twice b4 hyping these minor age girl / boy groups cus companies would definitely end up taking advantage and make the upcoming children's life miserable who wanna come to the industry at a very young age. 👍

People are saying,"It's their decision,so we have to support them".They make those decision because they dont know what they're gonna face because they are just young kids with inocent mind, just because they make those decision to purchase their dream,it always doesnt mean they are making the right decision.Every decision made is not always the right choice. Many parents loves them too much, thats why they let their kids do anything they want, but thats not the right way to show their love.If you let your son or daughter do bad things like smoking, drugs, etc, just because it makes them happy, then its the parents fault for showing their love in the wrong way.I just want to say that,if it was trully meant for you no matter at what age you start, you'll reach there oneday.

I'm happy that those idols are doing something they love, but being a minor they still learning and building their own character as a person themselves. They sometimes forget the importance of having a decent childhood and teenhood. I just wish that the agencies won't rush them and treat them as human being, not just objects that make money for them.

People who defend idols debuting at a young age because some idols in the 2nd and 3rd gen who are popular debuted from 14-17 are just weirdos. You take the case of maybe 6 idols that debuted young, and think it should be applied wholeheartedly to 4th gen and new kpop groups for what? The average age back in my day for kpop idols debuting (2nd and 3rd gen) was 21. A nice number tbh, idols already left high school and had time to be idols expect the ones that showed up in mvs of other popular groups ex) Chanyeol was in a GG music video and became popular at his high school before debut. They might’ve even enrolled in university and were 3 years into their degree. Debuting idols and not letting them socialize in high school is a huge detriment to their lives. Just because you were a loser who doesn’t socialize and think it’s a waste of time shouldn’t put your own wants on these idols. Finishing high school should be a minimum for ‘idols’ why would you want your youth force to have hundreds of kids try to be idols and not focus on school when probably only a couple hundred of kids debut every couple years. Whoever supports debuting idols before 18 are too young or weird to critically think about what’s needed for normal human growth. I can see many of the idols in the next generation have huge mental health issues soon since so many of them don’t even finish high school. It’s happening in the world of football and other sports (an industry known for debuting young people who don’t even finish high school and are put on display for millions if not billions of people on the biggest stages (3.5 billion people watched the World Cup final, half of the world population) they have had a huge scare with mental health issue in the young players in the top 5 leagues where the most eyes are. So I can see that debuting these idols will have a very serious side effect that won’t show up until years later or even 1-2 years later. With an ever expanding industry with more and more people watching the heath of these young idols who haven’t had time to fully develop their brains will be put in jeopardy. So in conclusion, debut idols minimum at 17 after they’ve graduated high school. And anyone who defends this because whatever stupid reason, is just pedophile levels of weird. I mean yeah newjeans are cool but it’s weird when there’s a 14 year old singing about some very sexually suggestive cookies.

Debuting young used to be the outlier but now it’s the norm. We talked about famous idols who debuted young but what about nugu idols who debuted young and never reached stardom ???

I always felt so freaking like iffy about debuting young idols... like some idols debuting right now are younger then me(I'm turning 17) and I can not imagine someone that either is my age or younger to have the mental strength to cope with the idol life, being judged for every single thing you do, sexualization and overworking... 18 should be the minimum for me.. you are first of all I think a legal adult in Korea(not sure tho I ain't Korean) but you have more mental maturity by then... at least compared to lets say 13-16 year olds... I have seen many people say it's okey for idols to debut so young by saying it's their choice... the thing is... these young idols don't know any better... they still have an impressionable mind and we can't expect them to make decisions and thinking throughly through them... I mean I can't do that so I can't imagine people that are like my brother and step brothers age (who are 15 and 13 respectively) be able to make these big decisions while thinking through it.... just me tho maybe-

18 years old have hard life likewise. Just someone who turning 18 years old doesn’t mean you are an adult act like 20s, they are young teen-adults along with 19 year old. Like how New Jeans Minji have hard life age at 18 to be the oldest of group and people already sexualizing someone just turned 18 (for being oldest of group) like Noah with Minji situation.
@peachyarts386

@@edoardorivera4119yes I agree with that, in reality I feel like 25(because it is that age the brain is fully developed I think) would be the most ideal to debut but knowing how people want younger people I know that would not be possible.. but still feel like since you are a legal adult it’s more okey…. Ideally like 20 but like bare minimum for me would be 18… but younger then that… absolutely not- like I said people who are around 13-16 have very impressionable minds and it’s bad for me to use that impressionable mind-

I don't think any idol or even child star in the west has ever recommended being in the industry that young. Way too many stories. As a parent, I simply wouldn't allow it. You're barely a teenager at 14. There are things a 14-year-old simply isn't equipped to handle mentally or emotionally and even physically. Their bodies are growing and changing and the strict diets idols have to adhere too isn't healthy for anyone let alone someone whose body is still developing

We can't put all the blame on companies, YES it's their fault too BUT it's also the fault of those children and their parents too, their parents supporting knowing the fact that how cruel world and the industry IS, they should say once you come to a right age you can debut it but for right now just enjoy YOUR childhood, those childrens don't really know the value of childhood, as those idols said they realised it once they lost it, same will happen to those children's too, when they'll lost it they'll realise it....
