It's simple: If you want more ktubers to actually speak their mind on music and be creative. Let them be. Don't say any ktuber is a hater. Don't call any form of critique hate. It seems many people don't know, but music critiques can also be positive. Even your own bias would be interested to hear different takes and thoughts on their artwork. We desperately need more serious music critique and general music essay video creators in ktube. Let them create in peace and support them through video upvotes and comments. We got this!

but a lot of the content on kpop youtube IS made from a malicious point of view by people who have no real experience for genuine critique, that's the issue. you can't just let them fester because you want there to be that type of content lol, it literally misinforms the audience and grows hate. i can name you like 3 channels off the top of my head who do that for a few artists in particular. it's gross and childish. the community on here seems to be really young, either literally or in mentality, and not ready for actual critique. unfounded negativity thrives on here. that channel with the hello kitty pfp (sultry film) and vixxo need to go first, because their content has misinformed SO MANY PEOPLE that it's crazy.
@soomi

@@forg_tful. You're def subscribed and/or being youtube-recommended the wrong channels then. I am subscribed to a tonne of ktubers and none of them make hate content. In fact I legit don't often know what people are talking about. A lot of people also take anything as hate, so it's hard to take these comments seriously anymore for that reason. Especially vixxo is NOT a hate channel. If you actually took the time to subscribe to them and watch multiple videos you'd know its fair critique and not hate. You just saw an opinion on reddit and ran with it.

Personally, I would LOVE more analysis channels that talk strictly about the music, music videos, art, etc. We all thought of the same person. WE MISS YOU, QUEEN! 😭 The problems: 1. Analysis videos take way more time (I’m trying to analyze Everglow’s hair styles and it can be very time consuming to pick out the exact colors I need to describe things). So, not as many people are willing to commit the time to that. Especially when it doesn’t pay off… Which brings me to… 2. Industry related videos get way more support. When I try talking about music, I’m lucky to get a few hundred views. But if I talk about a scandal involving a popular idol? THOUSANDS!!! So, lots of people want to put out content that’ll feel worth their effort. And this becomes a real problem. Channels like Mera (focus on music) or Yeri Potter (focus on lore) don’t post often. That leaves us with an inundation of industry-related videos. And things like that are so difficult to make unique. There are times when I couldn’t care less about a topic but I’ll watch the video because of the narrator (yes, I’m also not a fan of the robot voices). So, they all become muddled together and boring. And it doesn’t help that everyone has the same 5 idols as their pfps. So yeah, in order to make these unique videos, KTubers need both the drive to make this content and the ABILITY to make it. Let’s be honest, some people like Mera could make the most boring subject sound amazing with her narration style and how she words herself. Not everyone has the ability to articulate themselves in a way that’s interesting. I feel like there’s a moral here that I just can’t think of. Anyways, I agree: People shouldn’t feel dissuaded from making KTube content. Just know that you’re going to be a little fish in a big pond if you don’t do something to stand out. And if you’re like me and this is just a little fun side hobby, then by all means go for it! Anyways, maybe I’d actually put out content more consistently if I wasn’t out here procrastinating and writing essays? Who knows? Lol Great vid, Robbie! We appreciate you so much! ❤️

I don't want to sound like i’m age shaming, but I think because kpop RU-vid as a whole skews on the younger side/or immature people in general, it's harder to have truly good content because that type of creativity and depth comes with age and experience. I watch mostly non-kpop content, due to how great the creators are in crafting an engaging narrative. that doesn't mean silly content isn't necessary: I literally love hive mind, but creativity, humor, and the lack of hatred underlying their content is why it's popular.

Honestly, there's a chance that Ktube has a rise again. The pandemic let us see the potential the community has for amazing commentary but the people who showed this actually had the time to make videos. Currently, most of them do not anymore, but that could change in a few years! I dont have the right words right now, but it feels like we got a pre-mature birth of a genertion of Ktubers. Ideally, its a matter of time when we can actually see that generation do its thing. Hopefully we'll all still care enough 😂
@soomi
@soomi 9 месяцев назад
There's a lot of ageism in kpop. A lot of people in their 20s, 30s and 40s are often bullied out of perfectly normal and neutral online kpop spaces. Immediately treated like some sort of danger to society. And then people wonder why the overwhelming majority of voices online in kpop spaces are all teens. Treat your 'elders' (we're not even old yet) better, people. And I agree ktube needs more 25+ representation in specific without people age-shaming them.

But now all I see are "who will support xxx forever 👇" and "xxx never disappoints" and that stupid vocals, visuals, music 100% list. Like. When did people stop actually commenting on a song? I used to love looking in the comments for thoughts on storylines or sets or even just damn timestamps of favorite moments. Now i struggle to find a comment that isn’t just... simping. Sometimes I feel that there are two extremes for Ktuberes. Either they love everything so they don't get shit from stans, or else they're edgy and knick-picky to the point of ridiculousness. There are very few, like Taejiu and lightsoup, who just are real, give true opinions, don't ride one trends, and aren't trying to say things for shock value. Also some ktubers can't put their personal biases aside when making big essays too. So I think it can get old seeing constant praise or full on negativity where you wonder why they follow K-pop if they hate it so much.

i really dislike sultry film. i find it very hard to believe they're a fan considering they literally never have anything positive to say abt kpop related things & even when they do their comments r extremely backhanded (ex: "lsfrm's mama stage was so good! way better than if bp was there!) they've also made a couple of plastic surgery videos. they make a video about a recent situation an idol was bashed for followed by a video abt everything they've gotten done. (ex: vid" jimin's TERRIBLE encore performance" -> "jimin EXTREME plastic surgery", ppl cause some noise bc nayeon's teeth look different -> "nayeon EXTEME plastic surgery".) idrc for what reason they claim to b making these videos but its so painfully obvious its just more dog whistling for people to gang up on idols that are already getting dragged. there's nothing wrong w/ plastic surgery but the reason talking abt it is a faux-pas in the k-pop community is bc people use it against idols. i'd say im shocked by how many supporters they have but by scrolling through their comment section its pretty safe to say everyone who's a fan of their content is the same hateful, insufferable prick that they are

As someone who's been talking about controversial Kpop topics for a year, honestly I agree with you. I had taken this week off from doing RU-vid content to think about different content that talks about the genre side instead of the drama side, and so I really want to thank you for making a video that says every thought I've had in my mind this week about Kpop RU-vid. I've talked about a lot of K-Tube drama, and I have repeated myself numerous times, so I'm thinking about how I can bring some Kpop content that doesn't talk about drama and industry stuff all of the time. I feel that the lack of music/concept critique can be attributed to the fact that there are less people that feel equipped to talk about a release besides going "this slayed / the outfits are trash / mv looks boring", compared to giving a commentary on whatever tea they have read on r/kpopthoughts or stan twt recently. The fact that people on each platform are scared of stans coming for them is quite discouraging for those thinking of creating content. If you have any smaller content creator recommendations, do share them on community tab! From a side perspective your subscribers are quite chill and supportive, and it might encourage others too. Personally I see that there are people redesigning albums or simply saying "packaging sucks", when they unbox (no offense to them for voicing their opinions, because ultimately unboxings aren't really where you go for critique like that), but I wish we had more insight from people in the visual field about various photoshoots, graphic design, because if you do dig, there is content to be made. Not just "this is bad", but breaking stuff down interestingly.

(don't mind me just leaving a semi long comment from a former ktuber of two years who has ALOT of time on her hands 💀) but yet again, ANOTHER HIT VIDEO FROM TAEJIU!!!!! Everything you said is facts and I was agreeing the entire time. For me, I'd go as far as too say that k-tube is nearing its long awaited death and has completely fallen off as of late 2022. The burnout is real and its one of the reasons I stopped uploading. For me, kpop RU-vid peaked after 2020 and now its just oversaturated with either shorts, clickbating, fake reaction channels too scared to give actual reviews, so called ”unpopular” opinions, or rage bait. I feel like this plays a huge factor in why so many new or smaller channels might struggle to gain traction because unless you're doing one of the following things, you won't see any views. Which annoys me so much, people always complain about how kpop youtubers are all the same, but when someone is actually creative, they don't even give them attention??? It does sadden me seeing so many channels I watch just leave, but when you mentioned the repetitive nature of ktube it was bound to happen. There is only so much times someone can talk about kpop comebacks or share their 'opinions' All the good youtubers (i.e Mera which imo her videos were too good for k-tube, if she didn't return then it wouldn't shock me) barely posts meanwhile all the clickbaiters and toxic ones do. I always knew ktube would eventually die and I'm not shocked that it's happening😭 Also most unpopular kpop opinion videos are so funny because most of their opinions aren't even popular.

I’m going to speak my truth; One of the reasons KTube is stale is because the KPOP industry itself has regressed a LOT recently in terms of creativity. I just watched XG’s MV for their song “Puppet Show” and I realized I haven’t felt like I have when I watched “Puppet Show” since Irene&Seulgi’s “Monster” and 2ne1’s “Appa” and TXT’s earlier works. Yes, KPOP is still very cinematic, but the excitement of seeing a KPOP group’s singular creative vision has been lost for a while now. Dreamcatcher and Red Velvet are still my ults, but I would argue that Red Velvet hasn’t delivered a true cinematic experience since “Psycho” and Dreamcatcher are on hiatus while they renew their contracts. …yet even then I feel that the KPOP industry just doesn’t seem to take serious risks anymore? Again, where did the EXCITEMENT go? Or is (E)XG the only ones who are willing to go the extra mile?

@@Taejiu I was genuinely so happy when I heard the news since Dreamcatcher are literally the last bastions of great, interesting visuals AND performances! Love the music too of course, their songs feel as if their producers actually take the members’ abilities into consideration. Like XG, I think they inspire people to create art which is rare amongst music groups period.

I agree with this, I understand the privacy aspect of it. My only concern for their channels, is that robot voices become generic, even with valid criticism, people are less likely to connect with an AI generated voice, which can also lead to the issue of people slinging hate at said creator because they don't view them as an actual person. All in all I think the tradeoffs of using an AI voice aren't worth the risk, really the only way to get around it is creating engaging content with well formed scripts like with Winterosy or Nctiddy's content.

Unfortunately, as long as KPOP "stans" exist, there will always be a ridiculous and unhealthy level of delusion and bias and toxic positivity within the KPOP fan community. I think the first little baby step to moving away from all of that it to leave behind the "stan" label, because that word/label has a messed up origin and inherently negative reputation. "Stan" has literally always been a negative label since it's inception, but so many people who use that label to refer to themselves have tried to change the meaning of it in some way or another. But they've failed spectacularly at it by proving WHY it's such a negative label to begin with by being so damn negative and toxic themselves. KPOP stans are always living up to the reputation of being a stan, and it's exhausting to witness. Of course I know that, ultimately, calling yourself a stan doesn't automatically mean you're toxic or any of the other negative connotations that come with it, and that it's really the behavior of the people that's the problem, but like I said.....I think leaving that label behind would be the first baby step people should try to take to make the KPOP fans community less toxic and negative. At the end of the day though, I'm so tired of people just endlessly hyping up everything their favorite groups and bias's do, because to me that makes them seem like a fake fan. I hate to think of anyone like that in the first place, regardless of what they're into, but I think it's unfortunately true for quite a lot of people within the KPOP sphere. I think it's so much more supportive to be able to not force yourself to like something your fav has put out just because it's your fav. People need to learn to just like what they like instead of forcing themselves to blindly love every single thing. And this also goes for people who hate every single thing other groups/artists put out. Like, again, like what you like! But that also extends to not liking something as well! Just....don't be unnecessarily rude/mean/etc about it. The key word being "unnecessarily" of course, because as others have pointed out, not ALL critique is hate.

Don't think "I'm not gonna talk about this because so-and-so has already talked about it". There are plenty of people who want to hear YOU talk about it, not the others. They may not even follow the others. Just my 2 cents.
@Taejiu

I can both attest but also contest this take, coming from someone who built their channel up over time. I started with reaction content, and that was rough, I had a few vids pull views but it wasn't great content, I leaned into talking about DC, and I decided to talk about subjects that I hadn't seen anyone else do up until that point, and it worked. March of this past year was a huge growing point in my channels lifespan because I deviated from talking about what everyone else was talking about. Gradually I moved into making more general content, but take my most popular video for example, I hadn't seen anyone talk about Chaewon's transformation yet in essay form, and I was able to gain some traction on that video and the others I created cause of it. So while I agree that everyone has an opinion to share on anything, and you shouldn't necessarily be hesitant to talk about what everyone else is talking about. My message to smaller creators is to create creative content or speak your opinions in a creative manner, if you are going to reiterate what everyone else has said, do it in a somewhat creative way, like an essay with your own editing style. If you're a smaller channel, and this applied to me at one point, there aren't a whole lot of people who want to hear YOU talk about it, when they can get it elsewhere, only after you create a genuine audience does that happen.

I think Ktube only got interesting because the pandemic gave everyone more time that some had put into making RU-vid videos, however, as things moved closer to being normal, I noticed a lot of the channels I found interesting stopped uploading as much. The types of people who would make the content I enjoy mostly are getting tertiary education, so they definitely dont have the time to put out good content (or even any content). An example is Vixxo, she's my #1 in Ktube and inspired to think more critically about music and learn theory. She always explained herself well in videos and had frequent uploads. Her uploads are more sparce now and not all have been the type of video I enjoyed from her. I wouldnt even suggest, nor request that she uplaod more frequently again, any time soon, but it does make me feel less interested in Ktube as a whole. Ive seen some other channels attempt to share their music opinions but it was a mixture of them not being to explain themselves as well as I'd personally like and often not so desirable video formats. After the pandemic, Ive just been less interested in Kpop as well since the mainstream music quality has been declining, I dont feel the need to use idol content as a coping mechanism, anymore, and my laptop hasnt been working for some months now. With the laptop, I had a more convenient way to discover new music and stream bcuz I had access to PC Spotify. I wish I could use mobile Spotify, but Im not gonna spend my parents' money on premium so user experience is just... terrible...

Good video and timely. I want to watch the rest and digest but so far I'm in agreement with some of the lazy and repetitive content on kpop. Just wanted to point something out. It's a very minor nitpick that hopefully will be of some help in future videos: the youtube landscape and its arbitrary demonitizations has made "SA" common parlance when discussing sexual assault (everything has to be a damn code or bleeped out now)... and unfortunately, every time you said "essay content" my brain heard it through the youtube-ified filter as "SA content". I had to re-adjust and then tune back in to what you were saying. That's not your fault, but as you mentioned, lots of people watching RU-vid aren't just watching ktube content, especially since it's getting stale and toxic, and this could be a minor issue for them, too. I think in the future if you say "video essays" it will nip that in the bud and be less redundant, since essays are a form of content and don't have to be called "essay content" to get that idea across. Otherwise, I think your video was well-scripted and cogent, and I'm going to check out more. Thanks.

I watch three reactors now: one of them is a pro video editor who focuses solely on the editing of kpop MVs; react to the k is professional/student musicians explaining what a song does musically; and angelina. Most other react content is kind of repetitve ans uninteresting, if you’ve seen one you saw all of them.

Most channels revolve around talking about new releases, and insulting the artists themselves. There is next to no thoughtful, analytical content at all -- it exists but one has to sift through myriad channels to find extremely niche things like technical breakdowns of who is the best 4th gen dancer, for example. Things that actually take thought or effort. These are usually diminuitive channels that said posters spam with their own content every now and then. And yes, when said content is that lacking in critical thought and intellect, I mostly just consider it spam. There are probably a lot more drama channels, however. These revolve around lazily putting together a video and explaining any sort of drama/controversy reported on by any outlet in existence. Any sort of drama, regardless of how stupid or pointless it might seem. So anything revolving around Wonyoung basically. Or artists that are prone to controversy for the most idiotic reasons imaginable. G-Idle for instance. Not all the drama channels are like the former, some just report stuff like new albums, sales milestones, or something positive. But these are few and far between. And the most positive ones are mostly just fan channels, not commentary ones. Kookielit is one of the biggest channels but has this basic template of 'why the internet fell out of love with (insert group)'. Then cites drama no one cares about, from years prior, like the drama with Irene. Then plays devils advocate the whole vid. Brings up an artists who has been -- or still is -- dealing with controversy that they know fans will be passionate about and argue about thusly. It is probably the most obvious attempt at clickbait, which is a shame because I like the random lore videos they post sometimes. But it is far and away the largest, most absurd drama channel there is. Because at some point one has to drop the kookies and try to make a valid point. Not just report on drama and the no. of coffee trucks currently sent to JYPe. The best part of the vids are the debates in the comments from fans who actually know what they're talking about. And correct said nonsense. That and they compile most of the current drama so if you actually want to keep track of all these artists, ironically it's helpful in that regard. There are a few channels that are thoughtful and/or thought provoking, but again, the lions share of them are just spam or drama channels which I would barely consider content at all. I mean, it's obvious when the channel is actually making an effort, and when it's just a litany of shit posts about random controversy that has already been covered many times over. This leads me to my last point: this is probably the only channel worth clicking on that is based on this type of long-form content. For starters, you make it a point to make sure your points actually makes sense. You will overanalyze your own words/sentences several times just to make sure people are not going to misunderstand said points or opinions. Or assume that you have a particular opinion on this/that topic. You try to make it patently clear, but it's never extremely redundant or boring. The points are logical and clear. And while I'm sure there are other channels like this, if one has to sift through so many channels to find another one worth watching, that is pretty much a sign of the contentsphere as a whole. Further establishing the claims in this video. Realistically I don't think a lot of said channels will put in more effort unless youtube suddenly starts monetizing low effort drama channels with little to no subscribers. And nary a thought put into it. And the few who do make good content do so because they are a fan and not to stir up any controversy whatsoever. In summation: the fans and discourse never evolve. So just watch another IU video. Oddly enough it usually reminds me that ultimately reading or watching 99 percent of said videos was a complete waste of time. And it usually just makes me want to watch all of my other favorite artists' shows/content. Ironically I consider IU the ultimate Pallete Cleanser in regards to said drama.
