I'm glad I learned how to work on floating trems when I was young and had patience for stupid BS. Say I didn't know how and you put one of these in front of me today, odds are I'm just going to nope out of the whole thing and get something to drink. By the way there's an extra thing with the locking nut. Tune up guitar, get the bridge floating level, tune it again, go to screw down the nut. Now whole guitar just went a quarter step sharp. You curse the name of Floyd Rose and learn yes should tune 1/4 step down, then lock the nut, it should be sort of close now, then tune using the fine tuners on the bridge to get it bang on.
Leo also invented several tremolo systems that were wonky and wouldn't stay in tune if you looked at them, made with cheap tinny stamped parts. But Clapton fixed that, he decked and blocked the trem.
@@richlaurich9997 travelling backwards in time is not possible…no matter how much patience. Of course, the farther away you get from earth's gravity the slower time passes for you. It's only by relativity though, you're still older by the same amount of time when you come back and a few seconds or whatever more time has passed here than has for you. It's still all in the future from the time you left. But there's no way of going back to 1995 and asking out that girl who you just figured out was always your soul mate.
I love my peavey Wolfgang with locking Floyd..Bridge. I string it Dave, like Eddie Vh did with the ball ends at the tuners mine 1997 versions and never go out of tune.. just thought I would throw my 2 cents on there .. absolutely love this channel and keep learning so much from you!!!!
I have 2 Tele’s with the rod adjustment in the heel of the neck. I said to hell with it and notched the body and the pick guard. Thinking of doing it on my Strat. I hope this guy is a good friend. Nice one, Canuck. Oh, tell musicnomad I bought that file because of you.
Another cool vid I've had several of these and the 3000d version All good guitars but some f'd over by previous owners. Kramer has the best candy red ive ever seen on a guitar.i have also used pics for Floyds i don't own the gizmo to intonate a floyd rose thanks Dave.
Looks like mine, I learned a whole lot about guitars setting up my Original Floyd Rose-equipped MIJ Kramer. And it's a cool trem system if ppl understand it.
I came up with a stringing method for Floyds back when they first came out. First use a wire stripper/crimper tool to level the bridge (if floating). The padded handle will prevent scratching the guitar. Then install the strings backwards through the tuners. Leave some slack at the bridge end and make a right-angle bend. Cut the string about 2-3 mm after the bend. That will give the "vice block" a little more string to grab and prevent the string wrap from fraying.
I remember a videos MANY years ago (back when Dave drank beer in videos and cursed a lot 😂) and a Floyd Rose came in... I believe the quote was "if I ever meet the a-hole that designed this, I'm gonna punch him in the face" lol
Dave WHY would anyone ever want a guitar with this contraption on it ? The shit you have to go through just to change the strings is rediiculuos. This is number one on the list of stupid crap. I’ll keep my Telecaster, thank you.
Repairs are best done hydrated. Been setting up my own floyds for decades, once they are set, they are locked in. They stay in tune much better than my straight bridge models by far. That really applies in Canada, with jungle humidity in the summer and desert dryness in the winter. Anyways, weird they copied fender with the truss rod nut placement, PITA. Very cool toggle switch, I am guessing that splits the humbucker. Love the candy apply red, sexy, but needs a real pickguard. Multi-Ply at least, maybe black pearloid........ Thanks for this vid Dave
This vid taught me 2 things. Never buy a Floyd Rose equipped guitar with a bottom access truss rod adjustment, AND never take one in you shop to work on for someone else. Thanks Dave. I will remember that.
Those were decent guitars and the Floyd Rose really isn't a big deal when you are used to them. I mostly used Kramer guitars mostly American ones and they were great instruments. Great video and job as always Dave ✌🏻
The biggest problem was some Matsumoku-made guitars had the trem posts set too far away... buggered the intonation unless you dowel the holes and re-drill them. Other option is put on a non-fine tuner Floyd and do the Guthrie Govan thing... (but he doesn't use a locking nut.) Those earlier design Floyd's have a shorter baseplate, so they have a different feel because there's a smaller arc in the movement of the trem and less leverage.
I'd love to take you up on your offer to come up there and use your tools to fix my guitar. Frankly, I learned everything I know about guitar repair and setup from your videos. But I'm down in the States and have all my own tools now. So the reason I tossed this comment in here is basically to say thank you for everything you've posted that have helped me and countless others go from people who played guitar for a long time but barely knew the name of the components on the chunk of wood in our hands to people who can do refrets and identify issues that need fixing that many others would never see.
Love that guitar. It looks immaculate. Is it from the eighties? The amount of cash i have saved with floyds..over the years.. by not needing a ball end and just loosening, and putting some more string into the block, must be like in the thousands.
I gotta' agree - Floyd Rose bridges and their clones - are NOT my choice of bridge. Just my two cents - and I'm somewhat mechanically inclined. Just sayin'
I've had dozen's of guitars. 2 of them with Floyd Rose and both of em gone in short order. Never take one to play near a body of water unless you want to spend your whole night with hex keys in your hand.
Besides filming it, we’ll need commentary as well!👍 I don’t understand why manufacturers put that dinky little route that’s only big enough to show you where the truss rod adjustment is, but no where big enough to adjust it without causing damage. They should force designers to work on their @#$& so they can see the errors in their ways!
What did Scotty say …..the more they improve the plumbing, the easier it is to stop up the drain. Too many parts, To many variables. really not worth the effort.
well that floyd rose system to me is mickey mouse at best. if you really need a trem system buy a nice fender stratocaster with the simple trem system, i have one, and you dont need all this stuff!! im a les paul player so i really dont even use it on my 50s stratocaster. obviously Kramer wants to make everyone a Eddie van halen. not going to happen. he was a one and only but if you like to dive bomb do it on a fender, much less head ache for dave!!! Hes the man
Three of my guitars have Floyd roses' on them. Absolutely love them. They intonate easily and stay in tune. One of the greatest improvements for guitars. Im sure EVH would agree....in fact I actually think he said that.🤔
I just don't understand, every guitar and bass should have the truss rod adjustment up by the headstock. Leo Fender got it right. Dave is so right, the more parts the more things will fail
I hate sharp fret ends it's like grabbing a chainsaw blade on both sides. I cut the hell out of my hand on a new guitar 7 stitches later and I filed and sanded that shit down and rounded them over to wear you could lick the fret end with your tongue if you felt so inclined, Not me! But you get my meaning smooth as glass fret ends lol
Can Anyone on here tell me which model Kramer focus 3000 guitar has 2 dials because I know the 2000 model does I have no ID numbers I've just brought it...but can someone tell me anything
Apparently Dave hates Floyds. Lol!! And judging by the comments a lot of peeps in here agree with him. Not me. I’d throw one on a banjo if given the opportunity.
Dude, the next time you get a guitar with a Floyd style wiggle stick in the shop, be sure to set the fine tuners at the halfway point on the baseplate instead of leaving them cranked so high - this gives the user plenty of room to go in either direction when ‘fine tuning’. Also, for any of you Drop-D users with guitars that have a Floyd and no DTuna… with your guitar tuned to drop D, before locking the E/A clamping block, make sure the fine tuner is cranked up enough to get that E string back to pitch if you for some reason ever need to get there. I’d say a good 80% raised is a good spot, as it’ll give you enough room to tune it back to standard E, as well as fine tune the D when you go back down.
Does anyone know if the slot on the body where the neck bolts in is a uniform size across all bodies and guitars? I'm planning a future project of turning a telecaster into a 4-string bass and wondering just in case I have to throw a bass neck onto the tele body.
If you’re seriously going to attempt that my advice is to install a set of #8-32 E-Z Lok threaded inserts in the neck. Widen the holes in the heal and use four 1 3/4” machine bolts to lock it down.
