Magnificent music, worthy of his symphonies! I am afraid there is a mismatch between the pieces. The correct tracklist should be this one: 00:00:00 Joseph Martin Kraus: Sonata in E Major, VB 196: IV. Andante con variazione 00:10:42 Joseph Martin Kraus: 2 Neue Kuriose Minuetten, VB 190 00:12:45 Joseph Martin Kraus: Rondo in F Major, VB 191 00:21:02 Joseph Martin Kraus: Svensk Dans, VB 192 00:24:48 Joseph Martin Kraus: Thema con variazione, VB 193 00:35:56 Joseph Martin Kraus: Larghetto, VB 194 00:36:44 Joseph Martin Kraus: Sonata in E-Flat Major, VB 195: I. I’ve never heard of Kraus. TBH, I was not particularly impressed with his compositional ability here. On the other hand, I am very impressed that Brilliant Classics featured this excellent performer on an actual pianoforte, an under utilized instrument that has fallen through the cracks of the harpsichord/modern piano lineage.
The theme at 00:24:48 is the basis for William Gardiner's LYONS, and one hymnal I have even credits Kraus for such.ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-j6GgAVlZgak.html
Composers from this era did a ton of work for hire. Compositions would be simple or complex depending on who commissioned them, and it's clear those works were intended for amateurs for the most part. Even the sonatas don't feel particularly inspired.
I disagree completely. That sonata (in E-Major for example( is a weird one because it`s quasi a fantasia and the main motives didnt appear throughout the piece. The listener is the one who have to recognise them somehow, if that makes sense. That´s probably why Kraus is an original composer compared to Mozart or Bethoven.
