Let's take a quick look this time at a lovely Krell KAV-280p preamplifier I recently repaired. This one needed a power supply repair and I overhauled the entire power supply module for good measure.

I like your terminology of a dead capacitor...........Cactus.

Brilliant video. I really enjoy your careful work, and the way you carefully narrate your work. Before I started watching your channel, I had real plans of buying some say older Levinson or Krell gear, but after watching instructional videos like yours, I will absolutely not even touch it unless the seller can provide hard proof that the unit has been re-capped. Keep up the good work!

I have one of these and mine started to switch off, same PS cap issue. Instead of more SMD, I soldered on through hole Nichicons to the SMD pads, bending and cutting the legs short like smd only higher.. 4 10uF 35v and 2 100uF 16v. Did the trick. I took the added step of bypassing the existing larger caps with Kemet MKP at the bottom which gave me an even further boost in sound.

This is v. good idea.As well I think keeping high-end equipment constantly on is not good as electrolytics have limited life.All of them.

@@markwroblewski6500 Well, since this post I recapped all SMD, the whole thing. I also replaced the coupling caps from the ERO to Silver Mica (preference). It is accurate, clear, deep bass, it's lovely. I replaced the internal power cable with some Furutech OCC hookup wire, also a useful little upgrade to do. The coupling caps are 100pF, 41pF and 33pF respectively. Great preamp, dislike SMD. Modding the radials on the PSU on this one is a must-do IMO - I'd do the whole thing that way, but tedious.

My 280P is always on, the 2250 goes on standby when not in use… Just great sounding gear… the transformer in the power amp can hum, a “noisekiller” helps in my case.

The 280P is always on anyway, whether you 'turn it off' or not, thanks to Krell's power supply implementation here!

Love your videos. Great work as always. Wish you were across the ditch in NZ to fix some of our gear.

Did you try to change the 25p flat cable, with a more qualitative Audiophile one?

Question if you had a cap fail some where on the board in a amplifier would you suffer treble loss

I had a krell amplifier before but it was a bit bright for my ears, the top end used to irritate me, had to sell it.

I also enjoy your videos, but would you please allow subtitles as the volume of your videos is low, and would aid with understanding your accent. Cheers!

Hi, thanks for the heads-up, I didn't realise I needed to allow subtitles, will investigate now!

Can you tell me what new for Audio capacitors you used for replacement?
@LiquidAudio

Contenders? Do you mean condensers/capacitors?
@Mario_Terzi
@Mario_Terzi 2 года назад
@@LiquidAudio Yes capacitors. The problem from me, is that Krell KAV-280p sometimes it does not turn on, I have to try several times
@LiquidAudio
@LiquidAudio 2 года назад
@@Mario_Terzi Ah, OK, you need to have the fault diagnosed but leaky SMD caps and associated board damage are likely. Replacements must meet factory specs for physical size, C, temp rating etc be and from a high-quality manufacturer.
@2packs4sure

So all the rest of the 15 year old notoriously unreliable smd caps on the other board were ok ??
@LiquidAudio
@LiquidAudio 3 года назад
Correct, they all tested well, which is why testing is so important. So just to clarify, this was here for repair, not overhaul. Replacing all the SMD caps when it wasn't needed and I had already repaired her would have massively increased the cost, likely rendered the job not commercially viable and really upset my customer! Remember, these are all commercial repairs, so customer budget, equipment value and job viability are serious considerations.

@@LiquidAudio Got it,, I know the caps in the preamp section have an easy life compared to the power supply.. I sure wish you were in Texas !!
