In Goku's flash back, he was seriously training until he saw Gohan. Yes, that's right, for that brief moment Gohan achieved SSJ2 and Goku witnessed it. He knew that if Gohan could control it, he could effortlessly defeat cell. This is why he was so lax and confident after coming out of the chamber.

Right Goku already knew Gohan has reach the level him and Vegeta couldn’t do yet. He knew Gohan was still a little nervous and green at control his power, but he knew Cell would push him if goku bet him in.

@@WaveForceful Goku probably could have defeated Cell himself if Goku had trained for another year in the Time chamber. But he saw a glimpse of Gohan's ssj2 power while training, so he knew Gohan could do it. Its one of those times the anime is better than the manga. The manga made it seem like Goku was taking a gamble with Gohan instead of seeing his power himself.

@@LordMalice6d9 Goku probably would have gone back in the time chamber if he thought no stood a chance a beating cell. But he knew gohan had the power to do it, that’s why Goku didn’t want to be revived because he knew wasn’t going to be around forever to be relied on and they would need to be able to take care of them selves at some point. That’s how DBZ was supposed to end but obviously it didn’t. Even in the buu saga Goku was reluctant to use his full power while dead because he didn’t want to bail them out again. He taught the fusion technique to goten and trunks so they could take of buu instead of him even though he probably could’ve killed buu if he actually tried instead of killing time for trunks to get the radar

I love that others are noticing the things I noticed even as a child. Things about Gohan’s arrogance. I love the soundtrack playing while Goku is yelling at Gohan to end the fight. The focus on Gohan’s face when he smirks with the unsettling music, as a kid I remember thinking “Gohan… don’t do this.. don’t be like this.” That’s like the first time a character kinda scared me, in a way if that makes sense.

Thing to me is. I don’t find what gohan did as arrogance. I look at it as gohan gave him the chance to not be bad or stupid. But once cell pushed him to far, he decided to say ok now u gonna pay in all ways humiliation style. I even think gohan wasn’t gonna kill cell. He wanted to humiliate him so bad that cell gives up and maybe goes good. My one reason thinking this is because of what happens in next episode. Like 16 said earlier gohan doesn’t like to hurt. To me it is his mercy as well as wanting to humiliate cell that almost costs him. And he does pay a hefty price for what he did. Just my personal take

No gohan is timid usually but becomes arrogant when he has outclassed his opponent. He does the same thing vs buu after being a weakling for 7 years, he gets a new power and then toys with buu. He never learned his lesson either. Hes very much a mixture of goku and vegeta

@@MrShloker I agree with the buu saga part. Arrogance is a symptom of gohan’s identity when he is a super sayan. It is shown by all the Sagan’s except future trunks imo and that is only because he has seen the destruction caused so he had a better head on his shoulders. I think the cockiness and arrogance is a way to nerf them a little as a drama factor otherwise the baddies would be beat fast.

While he is physically ready to handle the power of Super Saiyan 2, mentally, he’s still a work in progress. Once he realized how far above Cell he really was in power, he got cocky. Reckless. Gohan decided to make sport of Cell instead of going for the jugular like he should have.

U are most certainly right but I like to think the only reason he let up was because of him being gentle like 16 said. The drunk in power to gohan was proven in the fact 18 was released. Then gohan wanted cell to give up because he didn’t want to kill. It backfired because his dad ended up having to sacrifice himself. The drunk part was when he said he wanted cell to suffer for awhile. Again here is where I think gohan is punishing cell because gohan loves life and his heart is pure because at least in gohan’s mind, it is for the world that he even had to do something he didn’t want to do.

“Take him down now? No, I think I’ll wait. I’m going to let him suffer for a little while.” That was one massive red flag. It was obvious at this point that Gohan was letting his power go to his head. Had he powered up another Kamehameha wave while Cell was still trying to regenerate, he could have easily vaporized him. But it was clear that his youth, his newfound power and his inexperience were overwhelming his logic. You always go for the throat, not toy with your food. If you do, you may end up regretting it.

14:58 I like this moment with Gohan. It's sort of confirming what Piccolo warned Goku about. What's interesting about this whole entire subject is that both Goku and Piccolo are right about Gohan. And yet they're both wrong about him as well. Goku was correct at the fact that Gohan had a hidden power. And Piccolo despite underestimating Gohan was right on the fact that Gohan is not a fighter and doesn't thirst for battle like Goku does. Goku naively assumed he is my son therefore he can handle this ordeal just like I could. When Goku became Super Saiyan for the first time he was angry but he managed to get it under control over time while fighting Frieza. But Gohan's not like that.... 14:58 Now he is blinded and vengeance has taken hold of Gohan and he won't finish off an opponent because he hasn't *suffered enough.* That was a very dark place for that kid and it scared the hell out of him. This is exactly why Gohan didn't want to unleash his hidden powers. Not only because he didn't know how too, but because he was afraid of it. Now that Gohan has the edge he's way too overconfident. He doesn't fear that if you push a desperate animal (Cell) into the corner, the worst of any situation could happen.... Or he might do something crazy. I won't say nothing further for spoilers ahead.

Even though he was being arrogant and sadistic, millions of fans prefer this side of Gohan. Especially since we only get to see this side of him a few times. If Gohan hadn't acted the way he did here, Krillin's daughter would never have been born. So it definitely lead to something good

Gohan refusing to finish off Cell kinda mirrors when Goku was waiting for Frieza to go full power. Except in Gohan's case it seems darker.

Goku wanted frieza to max out so he knew he couldn't beat Goku. Gohan already knew he could defeat cell and was toying with him.although Goku did toy with Frieza as well playing hide n seek

At the bit in 15:50 in DBZ Kai, Cell gets so angry with Gohan that he starts cussing. Man, Gohan really struck more than just a few nerves....😅

9:17 Close, but not quite. The beam wasn't dodgeable because it was too big, but because it was simply moving way too quickly for Cell to escape in time. It's only slow from our perspective as the viewer so we can see what's going on, in the actual lore and the original manga Gohan's Kamehameha reached Cell within literal nanoseconds after Gohan fired it (within the span of approx 1-2 manga panels)

As a kid watching for the first time, I remember being in awe of how strong Gohan became. Now as an adult, I can empathize and see just how angry he is in this fight. I used to see this episode as Gohan showing off in arrogance but now see it as his rage completely consuming him. The next episodes are some of his best “back to reality” and comeback moments of his character arc. P.S. I miss when the super saiyan transformation was triggered by pure rage.
