I felt like Krishna Bhan came off as a bit dishonest about the reality of the situation. I understand her intention but I also think the reality is people were targeted and beaten and we need to know who did it and why in order to properly address the root cause of the issue. The root of the problem was misinformation. Hindus saw things on social media saying that Muslims are attacking their homes, harassing young girls, throwing eggs at our religious events, targeting temples and burning flags. The Muslims saw things on social media saying there has been attacks, a group of Hindus had kidnapped a Muslim girl, they are going around in groups beating every Muslim up, they have targeted a mosque, they are marching together in large groups. Whilst elements of this was true most of it was misinterpreted and as a result lots of misinformation followed and outsiders got involved who had their own narrative. Some outsiders wanted to link this to the anti Muslim sentiment in India with the Hindutva ideology. Some outsiders wanted to say this was Islamic supremacy targeting non Muslims. Both were false and there’s no evidence to suggest any of these two narratives. Had outsiders not have got involved and had we have verified things prior to them spreading this would not have gotten out of hand. Moral of the story. Don’t believe every tweet that someone post and try to get things fact checked. Remember there are groups out there that wish for these tensions so that they can portray a certain narrative. In effect, don’t be useful idiots.
