the recorder is not that simple! It is not easy to build and not easy to play at the level Kristine West is playing it.

@@happyreeds that's what's so great about it though: it's easily one of the most simple instruments to get a decent sound out of, but requires just as much dedication to get to where the musician in the video is at.

@@yonatanbeer3475 Exactly, what is what Michala Petri says in an interview. That she took on the challenge of creating something out of almost nothing, just a piece of wood or plastic with carefully positioned holes. And that the instrument feels so familiar to our ears because of it being an icon of the rennaisance.

@@yonatanbeer3475 - I wouldn't say it is the simplest instrument to 'get a decent sound out of': just listen to how bad most people sound on it when learning? However, you may have mean't to say that it is a simple instrument to begin playing tunes on - I agree - it can be picked up by almost anyone and within a short time a simple tune can be played. This is because the player doesn't have to develop an 'embouchure' as they would when learning the flute or a reed instrument. However, this is also its downfall and the reason why so many players never achieve a decent sound. With the recorder the difficulties come further down the road and most do not get past the initial stages of playing: to create a beautiful sound a huge amount of work needs to be done learning to play with controlled but flexible breathing and a relaxed mouth (a type of anti-embouchure in a way). Also, as you correctly state, to play any instrument at the level displayed by Kristine West requires a massive commitment and a lot of ability; as much as for any other instrument. Finally, I would add, that the recorder is one of the most flexible instruments out there: because it is a tube that air moves about in, many different sounds and effects can be achieved; listen to the multi-phonics that Kristine achieves in the final piece; she is accompanying herself playing both a melody and a base line. The recorder is, IMHO, a massively underrated instrument.

it might not be easy, but it's definitely not the hardest. as a sax player, even though the fingerings of the recorder are harder i would take that over the finicky mouthpiece and intonation issues. i was able to play bach's bouree in about a week of teaching my self recorder. though it does have some similarities to saxophone. really the hardest part of the recorder for me is half covering the thumb hole while playing the higher notes. if you want me to link some sites for music or fingering charts, i found a number of online resources that are free.

Just wondering whether you had any problems with your breath control because if you were to try and play the low notes on a recorder with anything like the amount of breath needed to play sax you would squeak into the higher octave. I am a recorder player who has tried soprano sax and clarinet and found the main issues are with how you breathe - alto sax seemed a bit more forgiving.

just a bit. i often had to let big exhales out between some notes because i had to much air leftover but needed to breath again. and it was in the last two few notes with the right ring and pinkie fingers that i had trouble getting out, but that might also be because my fingers are a bit big for soprano recorder.

honeychurchgipsy6 When you sing, you often end with your last bith of breath on a frase which is often your low note. Flute requires a totally different approach to breathing.
