My favorite shortcut changes: "r" = "reload" original brush preset. With this you can always go back to your brushes default size, but you also reset the "erase-mode". When toggling with "e", I often lose track on which brushes I left in erase mode. But when I press "r" I always know I'm back to normal. "q" = toggle between last used preset. "spacebar" = reset canvas rotation. "a" = Clear. Really nice to just delete everything on the layer with one click. "1" and "2" = Undo and Redo. Makes it really easy to go back and forth. I also have "create new layer" on "3".

Nice scheme! Thanks for sharing. I like the idea of easy undo and redo. Also the reload button is great, as I also tend to forget whether I'm in erase mode or not.

I would really benefit from subtitles in English. My hearing is not good, and I would like to understand all of your instructions. I slowed the video, but although your English is excellent, your accent makes it difficult for me to hear well. What I can pick up seems very useful. Thanks for considering this.
@wojtryb
@wojtryb 3 года назад
It takes some time for youTube to generate automatic subtitles - all my other videos have them, and they seem to be okay-ish from the first glance. I have a written script for every video, but I'm not sure it's worth adding work to already work-heavy videos. I hope they will appear soon, and now I can only ask for a bit of patience.

Hello. Thank you for developing the toggle shortcuts add-on. They are a nice little time saver and kind of helps with the immersion, if that makes sense. I have a question about the Line Tool toggle, which seems (at least for me) to operate the same way that the default 'V' shortcut works. The problem here is that the toggle mode seems to retain the behavior of stopping the freehand line you were drawing, and you can't continue in freehand by letting go of the toggle key. Contrast this with the way CTRL smoothly creates straight lines when using the freehand selection tool without interruption. Would it be possible to deliver this experience with brushes using temporary tool switching? I could see this being very useful with the Shape Fill brush, but maybe this couldn't be done without rewriting the brush engine from scratch. Anyhow, thanks for reading my wall of text.
@wojtryb
@wojtryb 3 года назад
Thank you for this wall of text! Here comes mine ;) Add-ons in Krita are relatively new thing, and still have a lot of limitations. In this case it only allows me to change active tool, and I need to use a lot of tricks with counting time and catching krita internal events to find a right moment to make a switch. I also recall that current input system in krita has a lot of limitations on its own, and I think that changing things like a tool or eraser mid-stroke is not possible at all even with modifying krita code (afair it would require rewriting this whole input system from scratch, which may not be worth it for quite some time). In terms of shape engine - I made a feature request for this on KA over year ago, but it didn't get too much attention. But as it doesn't switch tool, I think it might be technically possible. But this would have to be done in krita code in C++ in which I don't feel too comfortable to code it myself.

Didn't know at all that preserve alpha was a thing, that's like, the best advice I've ever heard about digital painting in a while, and also thanks for the tip on keyboard shortcuts, I probably will keep using the keyboard with some labels on it rather than the buttons on my tablet, since using those buttons feels really awkward.
@wojtryb
@wojtryb 3 года назад
Thank you! Preserve alpha is one of the most basic and important features for me, but I know that's also really easy to miss. Probably dealing with alpha is a good topic for a separate video as krita gives many ways of restricting the affected area.

there's so many shortcuts in this program that are super hidden, a while ago while messing with the up and down arrows for shortcuts for moving layers, i found you could hold shift and press them to select next and previous blending mode for a layer, but i can't find that shortcut anywhere in the list, the only ones i can find change the blending mode of the brush. For changing to specific blending modes there's also a list of shorcuts to change so multiply, color doge, burn etc. I find these more useful but they only apply to the brushes again, i wish this could work for layers 'cause scrolling through blending modes feels very seizure inducing seeing how effects change in the whole canvas. The other problem is that there's a limited selection of blending modes you can set a shortcut to, i wish i could have one for Divide blending mode. I use my numbpad with modifiers to select different blending modes and even filters. for some reason "cross-channel curve" isn't on the list to set a shortcut to. But all of this is now less of a problem that we have the "serch action" feature on krita 5, a lot of things i rarely used but still wanted a shortcut for easy access can now go away and i can just press control enter to type and select that action! This is such a big time saver!
@wojtryb
@wojtryb 2 года назад
I can't really search for this "next blending mode" shortcut at the moment - you could try to assign any other shortcut to shift+arrow. Then the pop-up that notified you about the conflict, should also provide you with the name of what you're searching for. If not - I guess it's hardcoded for some reason and you can't easily change that. In terms of pushing specific blending mode - it's a bit problematic as there are so many of them, it's hard to decide which should be available as actions not to spam the settings with them. It's in fact a typical usecase of python add-on. Like this is the easiest thing each beginner krita plugin programmer starts from - a good place to start learning how to code.
@scroptels
@scroptels 2 года назад
@@wojtryb It's probably something hardcoded, likely part of the layers docker, the more i mess around with it i realize there's a lot of keys you can press to navigate which you can't find on the shortcuts menu, but you have to click on the docker for the keys to work. However shift+up/down activate the layer above or below by default, so I honestly don't remember how i tricked the programm to let me change the layer blending mode with the shift and arrow keys lol i'm not really confident in my hability to programm a working plugin for krita, but if you say it's easy for a beginner i might try it out. I use blending modes a lot, on my layers and on my brushes, so having easier access to different blending modes is something i would personally find useful.
@wojtryb
@wojtryb 2 года назад
You must have do that after you clicked on combobox with layer blending modes. Before you click on canvas or any other interface element, arrows should work for this combobox instead of what is in krita shortcuts. Or maybe you had a mouse hovering above it. In terms of creating a plugin - probably not the easiest thing to if you never did any programming, but a cool learn for sure, with a possibility to get a great reward if you succeed. For resources you can look at krita-artists (KA) forum with many people developing plugins. There is my simple plugin "Wojtryb extension - 4 additional keyboard actions" which you could use as starting template after you install and run it. In terms of learning programming itself you can look at "krita scripting school" and "python on tutorialspoint". You can always ask for help, with KA being a better place for that - here I cannot place links or upload files.

I hope when the beta drops Microsoft automatically updates it instead of waiting because I can deal with a possibly (but unlikely) glitch here and there if it means i get the new features I wanted like recording and smoother content brushwise
@wojtryb
@wojtryb 3 года назад
Technically Microsoft doesn't ship Krita afaik. It's the responsibility of the developers themselves. As you talk about automatic updates, I assume you use Krita from MS Store (thank you for support!) - I'm sure there won't be a update to beta there, as being a beta tester is a help in development, not an obligatory task. It's a common practice to use only stable releases in stores (unless there is a way to let users decide they want to use beta, but I don't think that's the case there) If you want to run beta, it would be best for you to download a portable zip version that won't affect your stable release. It works for me fine (crashes are rare but happen), but even as it will be released only once all known regressions are fixed - it's still 4 years of developing a code, that wasn't tested on a larger scale - and you don't want people who paid for a program to lose any of their progress.

Q, W is for brush opacity A, S is for brush color brightness 1, 2 is for select, deselect. I don't understand why most people haven't reassigned 1-6. Panning and zooming? Really? Only one shortcut of this is useful. Its a "reset rotation canvas". You can put it in the toolbar. 1 - 6. 6 keys, plus ctrl, plus shift, plus alt, plus modifier combinations. By the standard, they spent on panning by degrees and zoom reset...
@mekidunston
@mekidunston 3 года назад
I like panning and zooming because for example i wasn't wearing my art gloves today, and it comes in handy when i dont feel like spotting my piece while trying to pinch. Thats just my take but im content with the krita keyboard layout

great, now, can you bind a key for the Text Tool, yet?
@wojtryb
@wojtryb 2 года назад
You could: using my instructions on github in Changing supported tools > Fast way, you could replace any of the 3 bottom tools with "SvgTextTool" - so it will be available under one of the "custom" keybindings. Though I don't see much sense for toggling a tool which after all problematic, and requires typing.

Is there a way to hold a keyboard button to temporarily invoke a tool? For example hold E to invoke eraser, and when released, krita switches back to your brush or whatever you had been using previously.

Yes, this video is literally about it. For tools you can either use my script or create the canvas input in krita 5+. As eraser is not technically a tool, you can do it only with my script.
