KRK KNS 8402 closed-back studio headphones review

I recently bought these KRK KNS 8402 closed-back studio headphones, but after just five minutes of use I knew that they would be no good for any sort of mixing or mastering. They are not quite as bad as Beats headphones, but they are definitely not ‘studio’ grade, not by a country mile. They are more suitable for ‘gamers’ than for serious audio work.

I have a set of KNS 8402s and mainly use them for tracking. Both my Black Lion and Audient audio interfaces have strong headphone amps so that helps the cans get good listening levels but I rarely mix on them. I have AKG open backs and some Audio Technicas that are more of the same budget side of the headphone world type. Again, mostly used to track with. My wife likes the open backs when recording vocals. Maybe someday I'll spring for the Neumann NDH 30s, would be nice to have for mixing and mastering reference. Thanks for the great video!

Thanks, GER. Yes, the Neumann's are on a different level entirely.

I use KRK 8400 headphones more than 5 years, I hated first and love now, because its very lightweight and comfortable. I use Beyerdynamic 700 Pro X for better sound, but 1 hour and my ears and head get tired. For mixing/mastering I use Neumann NDH 30. But for recording vocals or gaming the other expensive headphones are useless if they are much more comfortable, so now I can buy the 8402 version.

Nice review, Mr Raven! Like you say, a bit on the budget end for mixing/mastering, but I'm guessing that particular model is fine for 'general' use. I've had my Audio-Technica ATH-M50x for over 3 years now, and still love 'em. Use mainly with Roland V-Drums too, but also sound great plugged into laptop or iPad for music. They might be a bit bright on the top end, but my high frequency hearing has degraded after spending years working in sever/switch rooms- so they sound very well balanced to me ;-)

Hey, Yup, AT M50x are a popular choice. I, personally, haven't heard them in anger, just a few minutes here and there so don't really recall their sonic characteristics but I do remember them being quite sparkly at the top of the frequency range. I think 'cans' are a personal thing and I like my cans to have a nice smooth rounded off quality, while still revealing all the frequencies accurate. I imagine server/switch rooms could be a noisy place to work, not quite the sawing machine sweat shops of yesteryear, but hardly ideal. Then again, from the age of 20 our hearing starts to go downhill, starting at the top end anyway. Nobody has perfect hearing once they pass 25 and by 30 it's worse and then downhill from there.

Probably for a lot of people these sound amazing as most people would never spend 600 quid on headphones unfortunately you only get what your prepared to pay for 👍

So true, Joe. The Beyer's, at just £20 more, are way superior to the KRK cans though. But yes, you get what you pay for and the Neumann's are stunning. I'd love some ATC near field monitors, which are in a different stratosphere to my budget Kali monitors, but can't afford those and probably never will be able to unless I win the lottery, which I rarely do ;)

What ones would you reckonmend for electric guitar ?

If headphones are to be plugged into a guitar amp headphone socket I’d go with open back headphones. Beyerdynamic so good open back cans for around £100 if the Neumann ones are out of your price range.
