Never heard of a beef between SOM and KRS. Two different levels. I'm from East Oakland, grew up off both. Casual is dope. I remember when they filmed the video for "That's How It Is", at that liquor store that was on 96th and MacArthur. John (Casual) was the street dude out of the Hieroglyphics camp. He directed a few of my cousins videos. 93 til infinity is one of the GOAT productions. Man I remember when Jason Kidd was a senior at St Joe's in Alameda. We went to the game at the Oakland coliseum. After the game, it was a brawl between Hiero and some dudes from 82nd Ave "The Hill". We looked up, damn near every door on the coliseum opened with niggas yelling, "Hiero" running out. them dudes was DEEP 😂 Good times man that was so long ago. I'm 43 now man got crazy memories of back home
That was lees liquor store. I remember hearing about that fight I was in the 10th grade at skyline at the time. I do know from being for real friends with some Hiero members they thought frisco disco line was a jab at them.
@@donkee9 so long ago man. Saafir used to post up in from of Jim's Liquor on 82nd ave. when i was a tech i did a job at his house on 98th ave, just before he became confined to a wheelchair. i remember walking down 82nd and Mac. this was right after 93 til infinity dropped. i heard this dude ask his homeboy "you ever heard of NAS"? when my cousins lived on Sterling, way up the 82nd hill, casual used to stop by my cousin Apple's crib. been around hip hop for some years. god bless our memories
Yeah, Future Development is one of the greatest albums ever for me. Pep Love is also one of my favorite artists. Hiero definitely boasts some heavyweights
everytime i watch one of your vids i feel like im 12 y.o. again playing nintendo with friends who are no longer here. its one of the only times i can think of them and smile, its like they are here watching with me. i can remember the jokes, the days we bought certain albums at the spot on 18th street, the wise cracks, the moments when one of us figured out a line that we couldnt understand, the girls we messed with and the songs that were on.... cancer almost took me to join them but im recently cancer free(!!!) and i find myself reminiscing a lot. sorry for the rant i just wanted to say thanx for the memories. the music and the moments are in a quantum entanglement that cant ever be separated.
I'm glad he said that in the beginning. I never knew they were related, but the way he was speaking and his looks; I was like, "Is he related to KRS-1?"
I was a Chapter Leader for the Universal Zulu Nation in DC in 1993. I remember going up to a Baltimore club one night with some other Zulus to see a show that featured BDP and Souls of Mischief. I don't remember who else was on the bill. It was jam packed. Baltimore had a heavy underground Hip Hop scene and a lot of MC's came that night wanting to battle KRS. Some guys were even shouting from the audience and trying to get the attention of KRS to battle. After the show, I remember being back stage and KRS, Souls of Mischief and some local cats engaged in a cypher right then and there! It was dope. A bunch of freestylin' and back and forth but I don't remember there being any bad blood.
Thank you for sharing this Kenny. KRS is my my fav EMCEE and Hiero is my fav crew in HIPHOP. Never heard about this before.🤔 Casual was all about the braggadocio. That’s how it was and that’s how it is yo!😆 Peace Kenny.
DJ KENNY PARKER! After watching this video a particular lyric comes to mind: As Q-Tip said "Will never waste no time on a played out ego". One thing that keeps me coming back to this channel is your GENUINE personality and mindset... and you made some bangin beats so that makes 2 things as I always admired artists who could make nice beats.. Hieroglyphics crew made a lot of beats for each other. That is what made me gravitate to them. Once again MASSIVE RESPECT! to YOU! DJ Kenny Parker.. you can't miss.
Shoutout to Kenny. Never heard about that beef. I love when KRS said he sees who is in the top ten and writes a rhyme to battle each one!! Nobody will battle KRS because they would get bodied!!
I recently saw that Casual interview where they took KRS line Frisco Disco line as a diss. Casuals Ain’t my Fault and KRS Hip hop vs Rap were both fire back in spring 94. Had them both taped off the radio. Great hip hop back then. These stories are incredible
@@jamalgray8694 "...You done let me down Cause I thought you would be dope, but instead Your shit's dead; You gets fed To the alligators lurking in the moat Peep what I wrote You bit so hard, I thought the shit was a quote..."
Kenny Parker, you're right, BDP had a lot of beefs through the years. And thanks to your channel I'm discovering beefs that I NEVER heard of and getting insight on those that I did. Thanks, Brother. It's refreshing to hear stories from a lucid mind about a group that I've enjoyed.
Wow! I’d totally forgotten about this story even being a thing. Casual definitely had a unique flow and I was a fan of Souls and Heiro in general but nothing like my total love for KRS. Once again Kenny, you have cracked the vault of my old memory and given me some mad reminiscing from a great era in Hip Hop and my life. Love the work and keep it up! ✌🏻🇦🇺
C'mon Kenny, why you making us wait so long for these stories man?! You need to hit us once or twice a week brother! Anyway, another great one. I never knew there was any beef with Hiero & KRS. Kris is the greatest MC of all time in my book and Hiero are hands down the nicest mc's I have EVER met! Peace & Love to both camps.
I'm from the Bay. Casual was always that dude. He battled everyone in the Bay. Casual vs Hobo Junction was a classic. This seems like the classic miscommunication beef. Where all it would take is one face to face convo to fix. There is mad amounts of love between NYC and The Bay. All the way back to when DJ Latin Prince started spinning Hip Hop in the Bay. Or when DJ Kevvy Kev and The Wake Up Show were the first to bring Wu Tang out to the West Coast.
I remember the Hiero VS Hobo JCT KMEL battle. Saafir was nice with it too. Friends from the West had that battle recorded on tape, visited Mississippi and let me dub that iconic moment. Still have that on High Bias cassette. Definitely a classic.
@@hugh_jasso Me too... I was probably the only one in MISSISSIPPI bumpin "Boxcar Sessions". I remember that interlude Saafir did on "Fear Itself" and copped the album strictly off of that and was not disappointed.
@@fredicagoillanoise1309 Saafir was always nice with it. He has a long history out here. Shock G put him under his wing around the same time as 2Pac. There are some hilarious stories of Saafir and 2Pac going at it on the tour bus while touring the chitlin' circuit. Mississippi is right through there. That circuit brought a lot of Bay Area artists out there. So you always find random E40, Mac Dre, Heiro, and Too Short fans out in the South. Respect.
@@emceeunderdogrising I learned about Hieroglyphics through the song "Burnt" by Del. I bought Del's albums and singles and that b Side was my introduction to the Hiero crew.
The frisco disco reference may be a double entendre...he coulda been speaking on the frisco fisco break beat but at the same time throwing a shot a casual as well cause thats what emcees do! 😂
I think this story deserves an update from Kenny Parker as to whether or not The Blastmaster was talking about them. If he doesn’t then that’s when we lost!!
The Stretch Arm remix to " that how it is " for me was better than the albums version but......Cas had SO MUCH FLOW. The " golden era " was truly golden because there was SO MUCH balance coming from both coast, you could really see how that era of young black people had REALLY been inspired and influenced by the previous era's because we were the same....DOPE!
So honest and righteous and of course up in the mix, you just got a subscriber of one video, which is a first for me to subscribe on one video, but love the love and the real history and honesty of reaction a spitting from the hip the hoopa it just don't stoppa
I think Casual mistook the Krs "Frisco Disco" line from Hip Hop VS Rap song. It wasn't directed at them. It was most likely directed at Paris for his "I'm not pro human cuz all humans aint pro black" line directed at Krs' humanist approach
Never heard about this 'beef' before. I rocks with KRS and Cas, but Cas is reaching here. Preciate and respect both for being stewards of the culture 👑
I really enjoyed this video. Found it entertaining & informative. But also, I would have liked to have heard some sort of mention about how “Souls of Mischief” sampled KRS-One for the hook on their first single. Also, “Souls of Mischief” will be performing at Brooklyn Monarch on June 19. KENNY - You should come through.
Peace DJ Kenny Parker🫡 Hiero was HURT because they love & respect BDP so much, and they thought KRS had dissed (as Casual explained in that interview) but you left out The Souls taking a shot at KRS on "That's When Ya Lost" (which ironically SAMPLES KRS on tha hook🤔) but it's A-Plus who says "Now I'm Gonna Show You how the West Coast SMASH KIDS, yo!/I'm rhyming swell, so to hell with a wack diss/generalizing...dissing before you ever seen this....". That was directed at KRS 🫡 Peace!
Just saw SoM last week live in Lisbon. They got younger! Anyway, who's chillin' around the land, y'know? Yo, who's chillin'? I think I know who's chillin' Yeah, tell me who's chillin' then, Plus Casual - you know he's chillin'
Didn't hear about this beef back in the day. Was a huge fan of Fear Itself though. The "Frisco Disco" line being a Hiero diss sounds like a reach. I also thought he was talking about the breakbeat, especially because the original record is on multi-coloured vinyl, so when it spins it looks like the swirl pattern on the Nabisco cookie packets. That also sounds like a reach though tbh...
@@djkennyparker Peace Kenny Parker! Word! That’s DOPE! KRS1 annihilating style after style on that track was genius! A relentless lyrical decapitation. He took it THERE… from JUMP on that joint! “You you can't can't be be ripping the mic The mic like do re me me Measles are contagious like my lyrical pages” The way he put those lines together. Simple yet Difficult…Different & ahead of its time. So much so… that if you listen… you’ll hear how KRS1 has influenced Lil Wayne… Busta, Jay-Z etc. 1 thought… Imagine if that track had a remix ft. B.I.G. 👑 (RIP) 🕊 Can’t wait for the breakdown. Salute! 🫡
@@djkennyparker Have you or will you breakdown the remix (Numero Uno) of I'm Still #1, one of my Top 5 BDP/KRS joints? I'd also love to know more about Kris's relationship with DJ Doc, who seemed to be one of the great unsung producers lost to history. Was his story like Ced Gee's, where he wasn't fully credited for his musical contributions, and where is he now? Anyway, love the channel and a segment where you interview your brother, the GOAT, would be epic!! Peace ✌🏼✌🏼
