KSP: Building a Stock Spinning Station!

fair warning, That ring is going to fall off the second you go to the space center or timewarp. Leaving the physics frame of the station puts the station on rails. Since the ring and station are treated as 2 different objects, they’ll be put on 2 different rails. Thanks to slightly different orbits, they drift away from each other. This is something I learned the hard way when I built mine. If you want to keep your station intact when you leave it or timewarp it, you need a method of redocking the ring to the station using either docking ports or a grappler arm. Also, if you’re interested to know how much gravity it produces, you can get some idea by sticking an accelerometer to the outer hull, and seeing what it reads.

That is...soooo cool! Plus I'd count a DLC as stock. In my opinion anyway. I love using the Making History parts. The Wolfhound engine is the new most efficient engine with 410 isp in vac.

When I made a non-stock version of an MCRN Corvette from The Expanse. (with a hollow interior) I got the ship at a perfect 1g thrust to simulate gravity, but Jeb would go limp every time he got out of his seat. I think the only real way of enjoying simulated gravity is to be able to drive a land craft around on the accelerating surface.

Rule of thumb: Rotation speed just below 2rpm are suggested for habitat rings so that they do not turn into vomit holding areas withing minutes. Also at that rotation speed you need a diameter of ~300 meters for moon like grav and ~500 meters for marslike grav.

Attach an extendable airlock module to one of the arms of the ring, then another port the the main section of the station. That way, you can dock the two together and the station will survive timewarp

thats pretty cool =) I'm new so not sure if you take viewer challengers but on the off chance you do: build a thunderbird 5 and get it into orbit using only thunderbird 3. I think it'd be interesting to see how you go about building the features of the crafts like building TB5 using the arms of TB3 ect

Make a modular ring station, like, it's just a ring, all the parts of the station are incorporated onto the ring. Kinda like the Endurance from Interstellar. I think it would be quite neat.

And what if you do something of this type but with cargo bays, could a kerbal walk in there

Wouldnt you need two wheels spinning oppositely to counteract the rotation force they create, As in just one will lead the ship to start gyrating that direction.

There is a way of transferring kerbals without EVA, all you need to do is to attach one of those extendable docking ports to one of the spokes of the ring , then add one to the actual station facing it, so whem you want to transfer all you need to do is allign the docking ports and extend them to dock then transfer the kerbals

at 1:07 how were you able to push the fuselage beyond the decoupler with it still being connected?

is their a way to build a vertical axle though? ive tried copying your design vertically and it just tears itself apart.

You should make the Hermes spaceship from the martian. (It includes a rotating ring)

Does it survive time warp? Or does the station and the rotating ring phase through each other?

Can you load these type of crafts, or do they just explode when you load them because one ship is inside the other?

any tips as to what im doing wrong? i got a ring, it works fine, but as i attach anything to the north or south end of it the thing shakes itself apart in orbit when i decouple the ring.

Matt, this is neato and all, but from my experience of making stock spinning stations, I found that the two separate crafts (ring and station) intersect each other during time warp, when craft collision detection is disabled. Any workarounds?
