Just to clarify some of the "less than agreeable" responses (from what I know is a vocal minority!) to this series thus far: 1 - I picked science mode over career mode so that we don't have to faff around with part testing contracts and similarly tedious missions 2 - We can avoid the part limitations that the early KSC buildings impose to make the rocket designs a bit more interesting to watch from a video standpoint 3 - I'm not trying to "brag" when I say things like "don't be disheartened if it takes you a little longer to do xyz", I'm just trying to reassure newer players that a lot of things in KSP take a lot of practice to get used to - sometimes things might look easy in my videos but that's only because I've spent so long practising. It's really just supposed to serve as words of encouragement and a "don't give up!" attitude. Idk. Maybe I didn't communicate this well enough but that was the objective, not really sure what there would be to gain by trying to put other people down about their own abilities... xxxx

I would have liked you to do career mode to see how you would overcome the limitations but I'm not going to gripe about it. Your content is highly entertaining and I appreciate the work that goes into making a video especially when you are doing this for fun not your day job

Nice work on getting to the Mun! Fun Fact: Gemini was actually once considered for a moon mission, given how versatile the vehicle was. They even considered both direct ascent and lunar orbit rendezvous with a variant of the craft called the Advanced Gemini, and the latter method would have featured a small one-man open cockpit lander that would have descended to the lunar surface with one astronaut and would later lift off again to rendezvous with the orbiting Gemini capsule, which would then take the astronauts home.

Speaking of risk, the Duna mission I did yesterday had so much “risk” that my final burn was with monopropellant due to being out of fuel. Just for context, it was an sstd rocket (single stage to Duna not an actual term)

That really wouldn't be that difficult, just boost your orbit apoapsis high and then do a inclination change or cancel out your low velocity at that point. Jool would probably be a big help too.

Lol, nailed the landing there mate. Usually all of my landings result in tipping over. I do make a wide wheel base, but where I mess up is that just before touchdown i reduce velocity too much (to say 0,5 m/s) and then horizontal velocity starts to be an issue, so my rockets land with little too much of it. Will have to work on that one little more i guess ;-)

I'm really liking Making History and the new parts I just made a 14 stage monstrosity using the Apollo and R-7 parts. The first stage is made up of NINE Mastodons and *TWELVE* Kickbacks in two stages, on two S4-512s, Four FL-C1000s, the new Kerbodyne quintuple engine cluster, and an S3-S4 adapter tank (That's 51,120 fuel, not counting the SRBs. It also costs 373,672). The second stage had FOUR MORE kickbacks and a Rhino on two S3-14400s. The third stage, just because why the hell not, had another Mastodon on an X200-16. It weighed 1326.300 tons, had 277 parts, and had a total fuel of 68,850 (plus 42,158 SRB fuel, including 64 sepatrons to keep the Kickbacks from destroying the thing, plus an LES), the vast majority of which was gone by the time I reached initial orbit... XD Not only did I, despite effing up and getting an inclined orbit, still have the ENTIRE second stage for the Munar injection (which I did not anticipate to be doing in the slightest), I successfully completed one full orbit and could have landed if I had brought landing gear with me, and returned home with half the fuel in the upper stage remaining. I could have done Minmus if I had timed my burn better. I could have done interplanetary with a more efficient upper stage engine and a second X200 (I just put an RE-J10 on there with an X200-32 and -16. Duna at least, though I'm skeptical about the return trip without a dedicated lander. Could probably do better with the Atomic engine). And no asparagus staging to f*** up either. To be fair, this is entirely a sandbox/science only affair, the entire thing does cost over 450,000.

oof! I just remembered when I was so new, I didn't know what TWR was. My first mun lander had plenty of TWR, but then I wanted to land this mining rocket which had too little, and barely enough fuel too. I tried and tried and tried until i got traumatized and left the mun _forever!_ Had some awesome crashes along the way though, like the one where the lander sailed all the way over the giant crater I wanted to land in and shattered itself upon the very tip of the rim of the crater. The nacelle which had the probe core but no antennae ended up hovering at a slight but ominous angle, slowly rotating like some creepy alien invader! :D

I always custom build every rocket. Some folks like to create a fleet of boosters and turn them into subassemblies, but as a career mode man (albeit with custom contracts and boosted money rewards), I can never bring myself to do that because it seems inefficient. Custom building the booster each time lets you tweak it to be just as big and expensive as it needs to be to complete the mission at hand, and not a Kerbit more.

Don't forget that there were some studies that looked at using Gemini hardware to get to the moon before Apollo. They would have used a Transtage, Centaur, or Agena upper stages for TLI. They would've then used a light-weight lander to land and launch from the moon.

Hi Matt! For the next mission, I think that you could send, together with the satellite around Duna, an unmanned little science rover! Not necessarily something like Mariner, Curiosity or Mars 2020, but I think it would be very nice and helpful to see this kind of mission in stock KSP as you do. Please, I love your content, and I'm waiting for you to do this kind of mission since I started to follow your channel! :D In hope that i gave you a nice idea, I thank you in advance. Keep going, yours is an amazing job. 💪 Bye

Interesting RL historical note: NASA did have paper plans to send Gemini to the Moon, launched by a Titan-III/Centaur, just in case Apollo/Saturn was seriously delayed and it looked like the Soviets had an imminent moon landing coming up. To say it was 'no frills' was an understatement but the modded Gemini DID have enough dV to get to the surface and back to Earth with most of the room in the OM turned over to propellent for the main propulsion system.

Hey, I love your vids. I am just asking a question. Whenever I make a big rocket using things like Mammoth engines and stuff with those big tanks, they always wiggle a TON and flip and explode. Whenever I see yours, they are super stable and perfect. I am just asking how you do it.

The new spacesuit is based on the Russian Sokol IVA suit, which is similar to the suits I have tested in the past. It is really cool, and all the air is held in by a rubber band tied in a knot! It made me nervous the first time I wore it pressurized, but it is amazing how simple yet effective it is.

I'd like to see you do a science playthrough with the Grindy Science mod (only 33% of science is awarded at a time) and 20% science rewards in KSP settings effectively giving you 6.6% science rewards and making repeated trips/experiments beneficial. That's what I'm currently playing and finding it fun having to use trash rockets to fly about the solar system trying to collect science.

When he said he had 4000 something m/sec of delta V I thought back to the rocket I made today that is designed to be a direct ascent mission and after all the other stages have fired you have about 4200 delta v to capture land and return The flight plan goes something like this Use stage 1 and most of stage 2 for orbit Use rest of stage 2 and a little of stage 3 to flyby Use stage 3 to capture Land at about less than 5 m/sec Go back up Set up maneuver to go home in 1 or 2 maneuvers and have wiggle room for error

I'm a nub at KSP, still haven't left the Kerbin System though I've been playing on and off since 2016. The thing that always turns me off is that I can't for the life of me figure out docking. Lol. BUT, I do get to the mun every time (direct decent of course) by burning directly toward my target node (the mun) upon mun rise from LKO. I always find that very easy, but it probably spoils me to a level of lesser understanding of placing nodes for transfers. I think you are very skilled at this game, and are also very humble about your level of skill. I know that you consistently provide Craft files on missions, and I've used your Keo stationary array design to engineer my own Com Sat array in my career save! I've learned so much form you, but can you do me a favor, and the entire newbie kerbonaut kommunity a favor? Make a Mission Builder file to train for docking. I know you've said a million times just make an apollo style craft for minmus and reload the save, but i'm shit for engineering. And lazy, the actual kind of lazy, not the kind that you casually mention when it's obvious you're not. ;) If you find time, it'd be amazing, and I think you would help many of the nubs here since it would be fun as well as fulfilling for them. Sorry to make a long ass request post, I know you get requests (and challenges) all the time, and reading a novel about one is probably none too fun, but maybe it's endearing. And could sway a space faring kommander of the kerbal way such as yourself into action?
