KTM 300 2017 Engine Noise

i just bought a 2021 tpi..... and i have this noise.... Is YOURS OK ?? 2 yewars later? ... I replaced the top end too... thinking it was a bad wrist pin... NOPE... my noise is coming from the counter balance shaft area...

Hahaha...glad I could make you happy. Mine still has the noise and in the meantime I have seen some other 300's and they are all bloody loud and have this noise... ;-)

yesterday i just picked up the 2018 300 tpi 6 days and i too was worried about this noise but thank god you have this video up :) .... was worried i had to take it back lol

Don't worry, in the meantime we all know it's normal and most if not all of them sound like this. Mine lasted about 150 hours without problems, then I sold it. From what i have heard it is still going strong with now over 280 hours...

No, it is the same with all bikes having the new engine with the balancer shaft.

Really understand you but it is no reason to worry. I was so scared that I brought the bike right back to the dealer. He took two other brand new bikes, a 250 and a 300 and they both were as noisy as mine. It has several reasons. The engine covers are wafer thin hence keep no noise inside. The newer bikes have -so they said- one or two gears less and the clutch is due to its construction making a lot of noise. I rode the bike for 150 hours and the noise remained the same and the new owner also says all is good after over 300 hours :-)

Hey Phil @phil.. it's such a head cooker I bought a 2021 te300i too. It's done 60 hours and still makes those noises... I had the head off cylinder looks fine.. it's the worst if you forget the noise after a week. It just feels like it will blow but it doesn't

@@motoman1010 unfortunately I had to sell mine not long after....but after lots of research it does appear to be fine...its basically they use such thin clutch baskets and casing so thats all it is 👍

Dont worry, seems to be normal. My Kato had 150 hrs when I sold it. The noise is still there but the bike runs flawless.

Good to hear. Mine still rattles like a bag of srews but seems its no problem for the engine's life. Its just loud. But I dont care anymore ;)

i just bought a used 2014 KTM 250sx here in the states... next day i took the bike out for a cruise and heard the rattle noise from the clutch cover... i was devastated and didn't get much sleep that night... then i found your video and saw that your bike is LITERALLY brand new so now i feel much better... i guess some of the KTM pressure plates don't sit perfectly flush with the last steel plate so there is some play... there's a video on youtube showing it

The rattle in the bikes before 2017 has a different cause. The 2017 models have a few gears less so the clutch and basket rotate almost free. This also why the 2017 bikes have literally no drag when you put the gear in right after the first start. However, KTM engines are very noisy and it seems that is definitely a feature not a fault ;)

No you're not listening, my bike makes the SAME exact whirling chatter from the clutch cover. i didn't say the 2014 & 2017 clutch components are the same im saying those noise is the same as yours. exactly the same and mines a brand new clutch

That might be, the cause is a different one though...

I only can say that the noise in the video is standard and is no reason for worries. Concerning your noise I have no clue but keep my fingers crossed the dealer will sort it out for you. Good luck!

Dont't worry. It has 104 hours now and worked flawless so far. I had the impression that the noise got even a bit louder over time but it seems to be pretty normal. In the meantime I have met so many other riders and they all report the engine to be noisy. KTM said its due to less gears giving the clutch the possibility to tumble a bit. Also the wafer thin engine covers dont damp much noise.

steve da man I’m feeling much better reading your information. I have a 2017 300XC with 54 hours on it. I just noticed the noise and started to get concerned. My noise seems to change when I pull in the clutch which would make sense from your description of the cause. I still don’t like it, lol. I’m wondering if I should put a Recluse clutch in to quiet it down? What’s your thoughts? I appreciate your feedback.

Not typical for the smokers before 2017, my 2015 wasnt even near as loud. However, talked to some British friends and they say their's is the same and it gets better with some riding hours and fresh gear oil. We will see.

Mine has now 85 hours and still sounds like that. I had both cases off, the left to check the fly wheel and the right to check the clutch. Also the clutch and basket were off at about 65 hrs. All normal, bike runs fine. Bought an 2018 TPI 250 this year and it sounds exactly the same.

Although it sounds horrible it is pretty normal. It is a combination of wafer thin engine covers and the for 2017 new design of the gears inside the engine. Mine did it for 140 hours and I never had a problem. The new owner sold it with a total of 250 hours and had no problems either,

The XC-W's show the same weird noise from the clutch. I have no clue why you assume EXC's are restricted...

I could be wrong, have been before. I am going off the manual of my XC-W where it shows a "Performance Restrictor ""slide stop 38mm."" listed in the Technical Specifications Section for the engine. The Performance restrictor is only listed for the EXC EU, EXC-E EU, EXC AUS engines such as yours.

This applies only for the road legal bikes, which have a slide stop, an intake air restrictor and a weird looking pipe with a catalytic converter. With these parts the bike produces only about 11hp.

11HP? my US version 2014 KTM 250sx makes around 50HP haha

SX's aren't road legal in Europe. EXC's are. As said before, they're delivered in a corked EU conform state.

No reason to, be worried. Mine did it till 150 hours, then I sold it. It has now over 250 hours and still does it.
