This is a GREAT way to change a tire. That being said, I just had my first opportunity to change a tire that had been mounted with this method. I used Ru-Glyde as the rubber lubricant upon initial installation. I had a terrible time getting the tire off the rim to change the tire. The lubricant had dried and it was extremely difficult to break the bead and get the tire off the rim. I ended up pinching the tube with one of my tire irons. It may have been because I used the Ru-Glyde instead of the tire "grease" mentioned here. I definitely recommend this method but it might be best to use the more viscous lube that Adam uses.

This is the best tire changing video I've seen yet! I've been changing my own dirt bike tires for nearly 10 years now and there's some tips and tricks here that I didn't know about. I think I'm going to give this grease method a shot, maybe I'll get more life out of my tubes as well. Also I have no clue where in AUS he's riding but the trails look so close to some of the places I've ridden in LA and MS.

You need to use a high quality rubber grease, which then helps waterproof the inside of the tyre anyway. I prefer not to lube the bead as this works in conjunction with the rim lock to stop the tyre moving. Greasing the tube is effective when done properly - I've managed to hit rocks hard enough to dent the rims, yet not get a puncture. The tyre levers are Metzeler.

Very thanks for it! It was on 2011 and it's now new for my eyes and poor knowledge, about rubber grease trick looks awsome but... Can you tell me if I can find more details, web forum, pros and cons about this trick in long time usage? Sure you know so well what happened all this years ago. Excuse my wrong english please! Thanks to you Sr!

@volta229 Obviously you will bend the disc if you jump up and down on the wheel - especially if you put weight in the spoked area. The disc is flexible enough to handle a bit of pressure from my weight on the rim.

I know this is several years old, but if I ever have to fix a flat in the field, I think I'd just dig a hole big enough for the brake disc to sit in. For the rear, also have to worry about the sprocket -- of course.

A pinch flat is caused by the tire contacting the rim during a hard impact with a trail obstacle ,pinching the tube in between. Too low tire pressure is the reason. That's why heavy tubes are more resistant to a pinch flat. A thicker tube can withstand the contact better.

Mick Fitch iv been greasing my standard duty tubes for the last 3 years. Riding and racing at 10psi. Only had 1 flat, and it was due to dirt stuck in the valve stem cap, but because it was greased up i was able ride it at normal speeds all the way back to the truck in the dunes and whoops amd the tire and tube didnt burn up. Still running them both 2 years later!

Mick Fitch yes in my experience it works well. But to each their own. I know people who get flats all the time. I ride a 150xcw and a yz250x so both light bikes. Greased up tubes might get lots of flats on a big heavy 450 still.

nice tips. Though I thought a pinch flat referred to the tube being pinched between the tire and the metal rim? (not the tube being pinched between the tire and the tire) So i don't know how grease helps prevent pinch flats more than baby powder since i believe the pinch geometry is the same in either case. But I can't argue experience, just an observation/ question.

Great video, I've watched it a few times. I took your advice and tried using the red rubber grease for the tubes instead of talcum powder. A few thoughts and questions: 1. it creates a mess, a huge mess, so being very precise and well prepped is essential, you must have lots of rags and a good work space. 2. spooning the tire on with the rubber grease is much easier than with talcum powder. 3. after a few days of riding a guy parked near me noticed that I had oil leaking from the rims. it was the grease that had been heated and slipped out of the bead as I rode around. Is this normal and expected? 4. what do you do if you get a puncture and need to repair the tire on the trail/road? Is there a way to effectively get the grease off of the tube where you need to adhere a patch? 5. I found that the wheel weights I needed to add to balance the wheel were very hard to stick to the rim after the grease smeared across the area. Is there a good way to degrease the rim of the rubber grease? Beyond those questions and observations is there anything additional you would add to your video that you didn't already cover? You made a great video please do more! I would love to see more about the following given your experience: *How to carry tools for trail riding *Riding in sand at speed and how to improve *adding luggage to a KTM 350/500 - racks, bags and considerations *Tools you carry when on the road - how to minimize weight and maximize utility
@nardoos1605
@nardoos1605 8 лет назад
5 degreaser is your best friend and personally i don't use grease or powder and when trying probably only thing i use is bit of soap mixed with water in a spray bottle or a rag and and i wipe that around the bead of the tyre so i then pump it up and it helps align it then wash it off and don't have to worry about grease leaking out or anything like that but i have been changing tyres for a long time though and have probably changed a thousand

I have been coating my tubes with silicone grease for 6 years running Hare Scramble races and just riding with friends. You can't patch, but I purchase the thickest tubes on the market (Michelin) and never get a puncture or pinch flat, so I stopped carrying tubes. If I were to do distance rides, I'd carry a tube. Never reuse tube or rim tape when changing tires. I've never had dirt and particles wear out my tube. That's ridiculous. I go through one tire a year front and rear, so one tube and one rim tape. I clean the rim on the bench wire wheel before starting. I have friends that run bib mouse and Tubliss and both get flats, I don't. Most of my tires come from friends that got flats using one of those two systems and tossed them out with a tiny puncture, but brand new tread. Score. Downside for people I know that use silicone grease - if you race hard you run the risk of twisting the tire on the rim. I'm gentle on my throttle and brakes compared to the pro guys, so never a problem for me. Ride smooth and you never see it.

greasing your tube is nice but how do you fix it when you get a puncture?
@outbackenduro7418
@outbackenduro7418 5 лет назад
This is why you don't grease the tube. It sounds great in theory but when you want to patch your tube out in the bush in the heat you would curse the grease to no end. I understand the why but how many ppl ride or can ride like this man. We won't get pinch flats at 20 PSI front tyre if you anticipate and or lighten the front wheel over most obstacles. Grease attracts sand and dirt so badly it might attract a sharp sided grain and get a flat just by that factor itself. Keep it simple and use patience and maybe some talc.
