In this video I go through the steps in changing the oil, filters and screens on a 2020 KTM 390 Adventure. The oil change was conducted at 600 miles and there were some surprises on how much debris was captured by the oil screens which is shown in the video. I used Motorex 4T Semi-synthetic 15W-50. I step through how to manually reset the service reminder from the dash, which is really great after so many bikes requiring special diagnostic tools. There is also a small bonus showing how I used the original skid plat from my BMW R1200GS to add some protection the existing skid plate while waiting for the release of skid plates from companies like Black Dog Cycle Works and SW-Motech.
I received a lot questions regarding the kickstand foot enlarger. The link below is what I used.

New owner of a 2023 which is a few days old. Salesman told me at my local dealer that if I did first one myself I would void the warranty. I took this with a grain of salt since you can count on one hand the number of times I've taken a bike to the dealer in the last 45yrs of riding. I plan on documenting as you did ,but not sure if I can get ahold of a check list to make it official. Very Informative vid even at 3 yrs old.

Great video! Not sure if you mentioned it, but as with any engine oil change, be sure and run the engine for several minutes just prior to the change. This warms the oil and allows it to flow better in the draining process. Also remove all screens and filters, allow all oil to drain before replacing any of the components.

I have found that using snap ring pliers is the easiest way to remove the filter. I do that on my 350 EXC-F and it makes it easy. In the early 2000's I had a 2002 640 LC4 (pig) and then sold and upgraded to a 950 Adventure in 2005, which was an absolute blast. I sold the 950 in 2008 and have been kicking myself ever since. I also had a 2005 525 EXC which I traded for the smaller more nimble 350 EXC-F in 2012, which was a great decision in hind site. Thinking of getting back into Adventure Riding again but I'm not sure if I want the much bigger 890 Adventure. Very interested in the 390's price point, but I'm just not convinced it will be enough engine nor enough suspension. Wish they would convert the 500 EXC into an Adventure Bike and keep the same suspension only with heavier springs.
@advmatt
@advmatt 3 года назад
I am with you on the converting the 500EXC to an adventure bike. Better yet, convert the 690 to an adventure bike chassis and I would be first in line. The cost of converting a 690 Enduro into a more adventure type bike gets into 890 price range.

Whether from manufacturing debris or break in, no way to view this as a good or normal thing. Keep in mind that most of that debris circulated within the motor to some degree prior to arriving at the filter. Concerning...!?
@advmatt
@advmatt 3 года назад
I think the strainers are before the main oil filter and the oil pump in the oil flow path. I think when oil is pulled out of the sump it passes through the strainer, then the filter, then the oil pump before circulating to bearing ports so the large debris was hopefully in the larger cavities and got flushed out and not from the critical wear areas. I had my valves checked and adjusted at 8k miles. I was having a stalling issue with the bike that got progressively worse. The shims had to be replaced on two of the valves. They were too tight. @advmatt

It is my understanding break in oil is different from standard oil and helps all the parts seat in. Not sure if it is additive free for if there is a different additive. I think the 600 mile mark is more of an industry standard rather than a necessity. I need to research this a bit more. Hey Matt, I noticed you did a “beware: ownership costs video for the BMW.” I’m looking at getting a 390 Adventure and am curious if you expect the cost of the KTM bikes like this to be expensive to service. $50 to do my own oil change isn’t an issue and is working my capability. But I’m wondering if I should expect anything else that I’ll need to take it to the dealer for and if they are expensive to have serviced. Thanks!
@advmatt

Valve adjustment is really the only major service I can forsee. Valve adjustments are at 9300 mile intervals. Complete service at 9300 was quoted at $500. Replacement parts will be European expensive but will cost less than bigger more expensive bikes. Overall the bike will be easier to work on yourself. Chain, sprockets and tires will wear at a slower rate from the lower horsepower reducing costs as well. Hope this helps, if I missed something let me know.

Is it true that the 390 adventure when it's brand new till the first oil change has limit on the engine RPM? And that dealer has to turn this off?
@advmatt
@advmatt 3 года назад
It does have an RPM limit but you do not have to take it to the dealer. After 620 miles the rev limiter is lifted. I cant remember exactly, but I think I had to shut the bike off and restart after crossing 620 miles before the rev limiter went away. Bottom line, I did not have to go to the dealer.

Oil, filter, clean screens, and replace air filter. I recommend cleaning the air box too, mine was not as clean as could have been from the factory. Check chain tension. It's me again, the Indonesian guy. After watching this vid and reading the comments (most owners see same amount of junk), I am bit "concerned" about what I see. The positive, there are two screens and a paper element oil filter. The negative, these screens look like screens from a blown engine. I always open my local engines (the screen is inside the clutch cover) at 500 km or sooner. I am use to seeing little bit of silicone and such, what you show is "catastrophic". You never mention what material was on the screens, some or most of it looks metallic. Do you have any ideas where all this metal is coming from? I have some training in automotive machine shop, rebuilding and doing machine work. I changed my oil at 110 miles because I always do that with a fresh engine. It too had lots of debris in the filters. If this much debris came out of a new automotive engine, I would be freaking out and immediately doing a rebuild, because that debris is like sandpaper on bearings. I can't believe this is an acceptable amount of debris from a new engine of any kind. KTM has a serious issue here. On top of that, to be in bed with the oil manufacturer and get this kind of results, is disgusting. Then add the fact that they recommend the semi-synthetic just blows my mind. I understand the relationship between the wet clutch and the semi-synthetic oil, but they make the full synthetic now that meets all the specs and is good for the wet clutch. Then just to make things even a little more disturbing, my new OEM oil filter came with debris already on it from the box. I'm using my engine knowledge to do a much better job of lubrication and maintenance than KTM or their dealers ever thought of. Good video man! I'm glad I'm not the only one that experienced this, cause I was starting to feel like I was the only one. I basically got ridiculed for sharing this in the FB group. I did after a few 1000 miles. I took the bike in for the calves adjustment and the ECU reflash. After this service the issue went away. Two of the valves needed new shims because they were too tight. At your height both will feel small. With 390 you can get the bench seat which is taller and allows you to sit back further. You can get some bar risers to move the bars up and some new footpegs to drop them 1/2". The bench seat will allow you stretch out the most. As for 310 I am not sure about seating options, there is a higher seat but I dont know about a bench seat. The added power of the 390 and an adjustable suspension makes it much more configurable. The 310 stalls really easy where 390 doesnt. Before I bought the 390 I was also looking at the 310. The power, suspension and electronics on the 390 are better. Of course I am biased.
