Good explanation and easy to do yourself with a bit of skill and the right tools. The clutch action now works perfectly with my short Touratech lever. Never mind the reduced pull weight, the larger friction zone makes this a much smoother action. You may opt to swivel the new (orange) lever a bit - say two mills on the actuation axle - counther clock wise. This will "center" the cable and avoid max'in out on the free play adjustments. Greeting from Denmark!
A tip is to check that you can start in 1st gear with the clutch lever fully retracted. Then the clutch is set correctly. If the clutch is too loose, you cannot start.
Thank you. This is the best bang for the buck accessory I've purchased. And I have thrown a fair share of money at my various bikes. This addressed my only complaint on my 890 AVR Rally. I wonder why KTM doesn't use a hydraulic clutch as on my EXC? Cheers!
@@yetiboy01australia23 That's too bad. I don't often check dealers sites to see their stock levels. They order when they like. If they are out of stock, you can order directly from us. The International Tracked Packet shipping option is $20.
@@yetiboy01australia23 Shipping costs were killing us internationally. We managed to negotiate some much better rates with our shippers. I'd like to see them lower still.
I assume this issue is also apparent on the 890 adventures which I just purchased. Can you tell me what brand levers you were using. In the past I’ve used Midwest engineering on my dirt bikes but they don’t fit on this one unfortunately. Thank you for your great video.
FYI Your new toy is hitting the gas tank protector . So just a FYI as this will start to wear a spot in the lower gas tank protector as time goes on, at worse it would keep your clutch from closing completely with the result of trashing your clutch. Yes I do know this vid is almost a year old but better safe than sorry. Great vid btw.
You need to have the arm in a position where is it not contacting the fuel tank. The positioning of the arm on the shaft in regards to fuel tank clearance is discussed 5:05 - 5:47 of the video.
If the radio in the lower lever is longer, is it not supposed that the length that the cable has to be pulled to decouple completely the clutch has to be longer as well?
@@ninemileindustrial I wonder how much $ that would add to the cost of the bike. Personally I would pay the extra $ for better parts... When you're looking at a BMW or KTM you're not thinking about a budget, IMHO....
Great video. Thanks for the tip. I struggle to 1 or 2 finger clutch on my bike (stock levers), however don't have this issue with front brake. I am not sure if this is a mental thing or not, but it just doesn't feel right on the clutch side - almost like my my mind feels I need more clutch level movement to fully engage the clutch than what I truly need. This leads on to attempts at 1 or 2 finger action resulting in my other fingers feeling like they are getting in the way of full clutch engagement. Do you recommend a shorty clutch lever to remove this 'obstruction'? PS ... I ride a GS, not a KTM.
I cut all my levers down to 2 finger length then add some electrical wiring heat shrink over the cut end. It does make a difference on bikes that seem to need a lot more lever travel travel to fully disengage.
@@jay26cee I bought shorter clutch and break levers for my 2015 GSA, 2 fingers length and it is so much better for on and off road. Especially off road.
What do you recommend for torque spec. on the level bolt? Also, do most people use the outside hole for the cable or the middle one. As one would guess the level is not moving as far with its same amount of cable pull the further out you go on the level?
On lots of bikes (most bikes?), the clutch drags when the bike is cold, the 790 doesn't. There is still enough travel to have it fully disengage, even when the bike is cold. The lever definitely is closer to the bars when the clutch is fully disengaged but there isn't any drag.
It would be interesting to see how the clutch disengage with that new setup... Reduce forces by changing the leverage is no rocket science, but are you still able to find your neutral position??
Installed mine a few days ago, since then the bike seems to heat up a lot more (temperature gage is still on 4 bars, same as before, but I feel it being much hotter on my legs and butt). Did I adjust something incorrectly? The feeling of the clutch when driving is perfectly fine.
The clutch is bathed in engine oil. You aren't going to introduce enough heat from clutch slip that the engine runs significantly hotter. You must just be more aware of the heat now that you're thinking about it, or the weather has changed, or something else.
Great product! Mine just arrived today. Question - since the new clutch arm changes the mechanical ratio on the lever, shouldn't we adjust the free play to be greater than the factory spec?
It's a good question. The deal with cable clutch free play is the amount doesn't really matter, as long as you have some. You have some with the clutch warm, some with the clutch cold, bars turned full left and some with the bars turned full right. If you have some, any, it means that your clutch isn't partially activated aka slipping. We've ridden a ton using the factory free play spec without issue.
@@syntaxmsi I literally check mine every ride. Give the lever a light pull to make sure you have enough free play. It takes a second to do. You can do it at stoplight or when you're waiting for your buddy to get geared up. It's a habit I got into with my first bike and I've always done it.
Camel ADV probably a good idea, I’m a little paranoid now with all the internet chatter about clutch failures... don’t want to give KTM any reason to point the finger at me and deny warranty coverage...
I am interested in the One Finger Clutch,, I have no issues with my hand,, but I could use a better friction zone,,,I just purchased the 790R,, will this benefit a beginner rider?
@@CamelADV I will place the order when I get back to the states and will order the heat shield also,,, My 790R was made in August,, has the shock issue been fixed yet?
Apparently there are superseded parts for the shock so I’m assuming they have a fix for it. I don’t know what the parts are and I don’t know if they came from the factory on the 2020 model year.
Finding the same as I type this. 22 890 base. Doesn’t disengage the clutch enough when adjusted as indicated in the video Edit: after fiddling with it several more times and comparing function to stock and another motorcycle in my garage, it in fact does work on a 2022 890 Duke base. I was being obtuse and not adjusting the cable correctly (backwards).
Suggest upping the audio levels on the video. It's really really quiet compared to other videos. all settings maxed on my system I can barely hear you.
Sometimes we have glitches with the audio or video and don't realize until after we're done shooting. Sometimes we can go back and reshoot but sometimes we are simply unable.
