So it's time to see how the brand new KTM 790 Duke stacks up against the competition, and what better yard stick can you get for the middle weight class than the former champion, Triumph's Street Triple.
So is there a new king, or does the old dog still know enough tricks to teach this young whippersnapper a lesson?
Well as a Street Triple owner I can tell you that without doubt the KTM dwarfs the outgoing Triumph Street Triple 675. But the new 765cc version is a different story.
Despite the many similarities between the bikes, they are very, very different. At best I can say that they are both fantastic machines in their own way.
The KTM is a lighter, more agile machine, and it has an awful lot of charm. It feels effortless to ride, and KTM are quite right to call it a scalpel.
The Triumph is a smooth and sporty ride with more than enough power for any situation. It feels stronger on the throttle and very well screwed together.
The engine is really the biggest difference, and the reason it is so difficult to pitch them against one another. I would finish just by saying that If I were to pick any middle weight parallel twin it would be the KTM above all else. And if I wanted to buy a bike with a 3 cylinder engine I would go for the Street Triple R in a heartbeat. They both feel top of their respective engine set ups.
So I guess I'll just have to buy both.
