I’ve ridden most of the ADV motorcycles. I think it really comes down to how much of what type of riding you are “really” going to do vs dreaming of doing. I’ve been driving motorcycles now for 50 years thru all types of four seasons in most parts of the US and Canada. Best to buy more than one cycle type if you can.

I have a 2022 KTM 150 TPI EXC-W and a 2022 AT Adv Sport ES DCT....Best of both words!

The AT only requires 87 octane fuel. Using higher octane fuel will actually hurt performance.

Im new to adv riding but after looking at the options the AT and T7 is my choices. Besides reliability youcan be anywhere in the USA or the world and you going to find help. They are the harleys of the off road world.
@paulrod6760
@paulrod6760 Год назад
Both the AT and T7 are great bikes for reliability and parts availability. If you haven’t done so, I recommend you drive both bikes first. If your not racing or trying to set a world record, I think a lot of it comes down to how you fit and feel on the bike for your body size and height etc. another thing to consider is how often you were going to be using the motorcycle for what type of trip and at what speeds.
@barendfourie6687
@barendfourie6687 Год назад
@@paulrod6760 everywhere i want to go is 7 to 10 day trips so the cruise control is the only thing that knocks the T7 and at 61 weight is a considiration. The T7 is impossible to find for a test ride. Think Im going to wait on the AT 750 launch and see what it brings.
@niw-w1f
@niw-w1f Год назад
@@barendfourie6687 For American offroad the KTM is the better bike depending on your skills, if they are low the T7/AT is better and yes they are more reliable.

Love lots of power, and a bike that is light, but would have a hard time trusting KTM over honda for far away trips. It would, and soon will be the 2022 AT SE DCT, for me. Hate being broke down.

@@sspirito3130 lol, honda with reliability issues? Ya I call bs on that. I'm sure some do have issues, but nothing compared to other brands, such as KTM. I'll take my chances with a honda over KTM any day. I've put 2600 miles on my AT DCT, not 1 issue so far. Other then the seat being pretty uncomfortable, I really enjoy this bike so far.
@sspirito3130
@sspirito3130 Год назад
@@curtisbull1583 My experience with Honda was pretty average to put it nicely. I can safely say that the Africa Twin was the most unreliable and most expensive bike I owned. Let me give you a hint of some of the issues you will face just out of the warranty period: - Leaky forks due to worn off coating. Honda will replace the seals just to get you over the warranty, but the only solution is a full fork replacement at your own cost (approx. 10% of the cost of a new bike) - Fuel pump failure due to dislodged sediments from the tank (there was a recall in some countries but not all countries) - Rear wheel bearing failure - Rust on spokes, rims and brake bolts - Rust on frame welded joins (this is pretty serious and there is no easy fix) - Random gremlins with the instrument cluster - I am glad I did not extend the 16K mi service interval, as all exhausts valves were way out of spec. BTW, the valve checks service was more expensive than a Ducati desmo service, as half bike needs to be dismantled to access the valves I was not unlucky, all of the issues above are well documented on the various AT forums, so it wasn’t just a lemon bike. This was for a manual model, people with DCT have plenty of horror stories to share. The AT is a fantastic bike, but don’t buy it because of its ‘legendary’ reliability - build quality and components are below average.

I drove the KTM and really liked driving it. However, based on my research, it’s made in China and had reliability problems and it kicked out an enormous amount of heat was a dealbreaker. Not to mention the fact that the motorcycle has many features already built in but they don’t activate it for you unless you pay additional amounts of money, made it a sour deal to stomach.

@@munger2166 yep, not made in China. Heat from the Catalytic converter is a real thing, 1290 had it from the back exhaust (2017-2020) new one has it from the radiator in front of your knees (2020-2022). 890 has fixed a lot of 790 issues, and the 2023 890 would be a step forward again. There is absolutely NO ADVANTAGE to running the bike with a higher octane fuel than the manufacturer recommends. You are just throwing away your money.
@fredrik999z
@fredrik999z Год назад
Lower octane fuel have more Ethanol mixture which have lower energy density and damage the engine. Ethanol attracts water, blends the oil and corrode sealings so if you want your engine to have good fuel economy and last longer you should stay away from low octane fuel.

Africa Twin has a fairly low compression ratio (10.1 : 1) so you can run it happily on the lowest grade fuel (91 RON here in Aust, which is maybe the same as 87 Octane in the USA).

@SWTrailsAndWheels 2 года назад
Not just happily, but likely with higher horsepower and efficiency when running correct octane.
@paulrod6760
@paulrod6760 Год назад
For motorcycles that are fuel injected and have a computer, I’m wondering if it would automatically adjust to the different octanes. For example my car will and it doesn’t matter what I put in it. Remember, the octane rating does not indicate the amount of energy contained in the fuel it’s really more about the timing of the ignition. I.e. to avoid knocking

@@SWTrailsAndWheels Exactly. higher octane fuel is not "cleaner or better". The engine is designed for a particular octane... Use that one.

Until end of 2020 and start of 2021, the 790 (duke or adv s/r) are made in AUSTRIA. And the price of 790 adv S was in 2020, of 12700 euro..it's simple, go on google for check. The fact is that 790 is the UNIQUE bike with a weight like a t7, but with specifics of the engine like a 1000/1100 cc !! 95 cv (or 105 for an 890) and 105 nm for 188kg, that weights 790 adv in 2020. Bikes like africatwin 1100 are sleept compared with the skills of 790/890..i dont compare garbage like a t7 because are the same of an old transalp 650 witj only ABS more. The result is that...instead a 790 adv 2023 has NOW, for 10999 euros, inertial plattform, a modern electronic, (if you pay 250 euros you have QS by, or with 300 you have a modern cruise control) a nice and complete TFT, it has TUBELESS...have i to say more? P.S a friend of me with africatwin 1100 says that the 790 adv seems a ROTTWEILER if compared to a Chiuahua of the japan bike.

yeah, bullshit reaction. I had a lot of problems with my KTM but i was just very very unlucky. and none of the issues where a big problem offroad in the middle of nowhere except one that needed the dealer (but was done on the 600 mile maintenance anyway). The KTM adventure R is a way higher level than the AT for trials, but I do think an AT will outlast a KTM though.. If you want to compare a 1100 to a ktm get the 1290 adv R but this requires balls and/or skill.

Where do I start? The Honda guy in a T shirt with a modest “Honda logo”and the ktm guy in a fancy KTM jacket. I know a 2023 owner has to cycle the power regularly when the signal lights fail to work, rims leak air, the engine sounds like it’s going to fall apart, very tall, had to have mods done to make this “premium” bike useable. He was disappointed in how much he’s had to do to it. Talk about drinking the orange koolaid, you ktm guys are religious. I’ll take my AT anywhere that KTM will go and probably farther and cheaper.

The Ktm 890 may win in an off road race ?? But over a 500 mile trek, give me an Africa Twin every day of the week and twice on Sunday, lol there is NO COMPARISON, I would even put the Africa Twin up against my BMW 1250GS ADVENTURE but for its slightly uncomfortable seat on a long haul , PLEASE don't listen to this weird review ????
