You can save a few steps and not have to drain the coolant. Just undo the 2 frame mounts and the upper radiator hose only (leaving bottom hoses intact) and then you can swivel the radiator sideways (carefully to not spill any coolant,might need to stuff towel in upper hose to prevent dripping) which will give access to the back side fan mount holes. Its easiest to go from the left side of the bike with an extension to reach through the frame to get to the back side of the fan mount bolts, or swivel radiator in front of frame to get access there. Much quicker, several less steps and saves the coolant.

Pandas Man - There are indeed many ways to skin a cat. I personally much prefer doing tasks like this on the bench, even if it takes a couple of minutes longer. In this case we needed to remove the radiator anyway, to straighten it. Always interesting to hear how other people do things though...

Awesome just installed my fan and you saved me from draining my coolant! I topped it off with some pentonsin silicate free (pink) 50:50 with distilled water. 1.5 liter concentrated from advance auto is 15$. Much cheaper alternative to the the motorex m3.0 and it is the same stuff.

great vid. After installing a fan, I had battery issues when doing hard enduro. Another mod that goes well with fan is a trail tech high output stator. Fixed all my issues. The 2017 original stator can't keep up with the fan and numerous starts.

Yes, I also have a TrailTech high output stator on my 2017 now as I sometimes found the stock stator couldn't supply enough current in long slow steep sections where the fan runs continuously. I haven't had an issue since fitting the TrailTech high output stator. In this video I fitted the same stator to a friends 2017 Husky TE300: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-3-XbdpPX0KY.html

@TokyoOffroad
@TokyoOffroad 3 года назад
For TPI bikes you have two choices regarding fan kits. The first is to fit the KTM fan and connect it to the connection under the tank. This is controlled by the bike’s ECU. Note that the fan relay holder is in the airbox on 2018 & 19 bikes and the relay needs to be purchased and plugged into the holder. On 2020 & 21 bikes the fan relay is under the seat and clearly labeled. The other option is to fit a TrailTech fan kit and connect it to the battery. A battery connection harness with inline fuse is included in the kit. The advantage of the TrailTech kit is it has a temp display (which I like to monitor during cold startup) and you can set the fan on temp.

No, just plug the power cable in to the connector under the tank and it should work fine. I know that the TPI bikes require an relay to be installed if you want to use the factory connector (and ECU control), but carb bikes are different and the under tank connector should be powered all the time.

@TokyoOffroad
@TokyoOffroad 3 месяца назад
@@user-jt7gq4fy3o - I'm assuming that you have a KTM fan kit made by TrailTech with the digital display/controller, part number 55735941044. If so it needs to be powered either directly from the battery (KTM sell an optional harness part number 77711979000 which includes a fuse), or another 12V source suitable to power accessories (note the fan will draw just under 3A of current when running). The stock cable under your tank requires a relay to be added (relay needs to be plugged into a relay header located inside the airbox), but if you do this the TrailTech fan supply voltage would be controlled by the ECU, which monitors the engine coolant temp. You can download the installation instructions from KTM here: ktm.com/manuals Enter the KTM/TrailTech fan kit part number (55735941044). The KTM fan kit with no digital display (which plugs into the stock connector and requires a relay added) is 79735941044

Whether you need a fan kit depends on the type of riding you do. For slow, technical climbs, especially in hotter weather a fan is definitely necessary, but if you don't do that sort of riding it probably isn't. I think that's why the bikes don't come stock with fans fitted, because some people will never boil their bikes over even without a fan...

Thanks for the video. Have you done this with the new TPI versions? The stock wire connector (labeled coolant fan) does not mount to the fan connector as now they are different shapes. It seems like they want a direct connect to the battery now. Really confuses me that the bike still has a plug labeled fan that won’t work. Help me if you can!
@TokyoOffroad
@TokyoOffroad 5 лет назад
Yes, I fitted the Trail Tech version to my 2019 250 EXC TPI. I connected the fan power to the battery (Trail Tech kit includes the necessary cable). The other option is to use the factory connector under the tank and let the bike's ecu control the fan. If you're going to do this you need to fit a relay in the holder in the airbox and it's cheaper to buy a fan kit without the display/temp set/temp sensor. Personally I like to be able to see the current temp on the Trail Tech LCD display (KTM version is the same) and also to have the option to adjust the fan on temperature.

@@TokyoOffroad Great vid as usual!. @TokyoOffroad
@TokyoOffroad 5 лет назад
Yes, on the TPI if you use the ECU to control the fan (plug in to the factory connector under the tank and install the a relay in the holder in the airbox) you don't need the gauge, or temp sensor. The bike's ECU controls when the fan switches on and off (no user setting, or adjustment).

@TokyoOffroad
@TokyoOffroad 5 лет назад
TRB GENERAL FLOORING LLC - No, the TPI is a little different. If you want to use a Trail Tech fan kit with temp control unit you can install the temp sensor in the radiator (as shown in this video), but you’ll need to get 12V power directly from the battery (the Trail Tech kits come with a fused cable to do this). On the other hand, if you want to use the factory power connector under the tank, you’ll need to install a relay (located in the airbox). The fan then becomes controlled by the ECU and a radiator temp sensor and external temp controller is not necessary. You do loose the ability to control the on temp and monitor the temp if you do this though. I choose to install a Trail Tech kit and power it directly from the battery as I like to be able to monitor the temp on the control unit display.

@@TokyoOffroad I just installed the KTM Digital Fan Kit to my '19 TPI. It specifically says in the instructions you need the auxiliary wire harness (part #77711979000) to complete the installation. This harness is a simple connector with a fuse and two leads to connect directly to the battery. You could easily make one. They don't say anything about the option to connect it so the ECU controls it. The connector under the tank is even labelled 'cooling fan' but has a slightly different connector. Any idea if it's just as simple as plug and play with that connector? My research has yielded nothing on this topic.
@TokyoOffroad
@TokyoOffroad 5 лет назад
Derek MacNeil - On TPI bikes, if you want to use the connector under the tank you need to fit a relay (located in the air box). The fan will be controlled by the ECU in this case. I prefer using the Trail Tech Kit which has the digital display and allows you to see the temp and set the fan on temp. For this kit you need to connect directly to the battery (harness with fuse is provided in the kit).

No cylinder head bleeder on the 4T bikes I have worked on. For a minor boil over, particularly if you stop and wait for the bike to cool down and top of the radiator once cool, no damage should occur. However, if the engine overheats severely, a lot of coolant is lost and you carry on riding permanent damage to the engine may occur, including warped head and piston/cylinder damage.
